To stream radio audio to YouTube Live with a visualizer, route the radio program into OBS Studio, add a visualizer source that listens to that same audio source, then send the OBS scene to YouTube using a stream key. Before you go live, confirm that you have permission to retransmit the station and its music on YouTube; a playable radio feed is not proof of broadcast rights.

Before setup: confirm rights and YouTube access

Get written confirmation that the station and relevant music rightsholders permit a YouTube Live simulcast. Check that permission covers your intended territories, any monetization, and an archived recording if you plan to keep one. Ask the rightsholder to add your YouTube channel to its Content ID allowlist if applicable.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can prompt a warning and placeholder, or lead to temporary interruption or termination if the content remains. YouTube also says a licensed stream may still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and guidance for licensed third-party content explain these risks. Requirements depend on the rights, territory, and intended use; the setup steps below do not establish that a particular station feed is cleared.

What you need

  • A computer that can run OBS Studio, plus a reliable internet connection and power while you stream.
  • A source carrying the radio program that OBS can receive, such as an application or audio device. The exact routing depends on your operating system and how you receive the station.
  • A visualizer compatible with your installed OBS version and operating system.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.

YouTube supports software encoders, including OBS, as well as standalone hardware encoders. For the software workflow, a dedicated encoder or audio interface is not a basic requirement. OBS is free and open-source, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Set up the radio audio in OBS

  1. Open OBS and identify the incoming radio signal. Start or tune the radio source you intend to broadcast. In OBS, add or select the audio device or source that receives it. The correct option depends on whether the audio comes from a player, system output, receiver, or another device; there is no single routing choice that fits every setup.
  2. Check the Audio Mixer. Play the radio and watch the relevant meter in OBS. It should move while the program is audible. If it does not, the selected source is not receiving the program: check the device selection, system audio routing, and any external connections before proceeding.
  3. Listen to the OBS mix. Verify that the intended program is audible and that no unwanted desktop sounds or duplicate audio sources are included. Confirm the mix before sending it to YouTube.

OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes adding sources and checking the audio mixer. The guide recommends running a short test before a first stream.

Build a scene and add the visualizer

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a visual base such as a station image, then arrange and size it in the preview.
  2. Add an audio-reactive visualizer source. Install a plugin compatible with your OBS version and operating system, then add its source to the scene.
  3. Select the radio audio source in the visualizer. Set the plugin to listen to the OBS source carrying the radio program—not an unrelated desktop or microphone source.
  4. Test movement and balance. Play the program and confirm that the visualizer responds. Check that the base image and visualizer are visible in the scene and that the audio remains audible.

The OBS Project Forums resource page lists Waveform 1.9.1, updated July 14, 2026, with spectrum curves, bars, stepped bars, circular variants, peak and RMS meters, and waveform displays. Its listed minimum is OBS Studio 27.0.0, with Windows, macOS, and Linux support. Check the resource page against your installed OBS release before installing. A separate Live Audio Visualizer repository documents normal, mirrored, and radial bars and requires OBS Studio 31.1.1 or later.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a live stream or schedule one. Follow the on-screen prompts for the stream details.
  2. Copy the connection details. In the stream’s settings, copy the server URL and stream key.
  3. Enter them in OBS. Open OBS stream settings, choose YouTube or the applicable service option, and enter the server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or show it in your stream.
  4. Start the OBS feed and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the preview shows the scene and that the audio is arriving. For a scheduled workflow, wait for the preview, then select Go live in YouTube Studio when ready.
  5. End the broadcast from the controls you are using. Confirm the stream has ended in YouTube Studio before closing OBS.

Labels can change as YouTube updates Studio. Its current encoder workflow is described in the official setup guide. If you have never enabled live streaming on the channel, allow up to 24 hours for activation.

Test before announcing the broadcast

  • Confirm the radio source moves the right OBS meter and drives the visualizer.
  • Check that the OBS mix contains only the audio you intend viewers to hear.
  • Verify the YouTube preview receives both the scene and audio before going live.
  • Run a short private or otherwise suitable test before promoting the broadcast. OBS recommends a test of a few minutes rather than jumping straight into a first stream.

The setup guidance documents the configuration steps, but a computer’s reliability depends on its power, network, and operating condition. Test the exact signal path and connection you intend to use.

Decide whether to keep an archive

If you choose to archive the live stream, confirm that your permissions cover recording and later playback as well as the live simulcast. YouTube says Content ID claims on archived live streams are made after the broadcast ends if the creator chooses to archive it. See YouTube’s archived live-stream guidance. Live-use permission should not be assumed to include a VOD or archive.

Common problems and fixes

OBS audio meter does not move

The selected OBS source may not be receiving the radio program. Check which device or application carries the sound, select that source in OBS, and verify its meter while the program plays. If the signal uses external equipment, check its connection and output selection.

The visualizer stays still

The visualizer may be listening to the wrong OBS source. Open its properties and select the source whose meter responds to the radio audio. Confirm the plugin is compatible with the installed OBS version.

YouTube preview has video but no audio

Check that the radio source is active in OBS and that the intended source is included in the outgoing mix. Recheck the preview before going live rather than relying on the visualizer, which does not prove that YouTube is receiving sound.

YouTube warns about or interrupts the stream

A Content ID match can trigger a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination. Stop or resolve the matched material and contact the relevant rightsholder about permission and channel allowlisting. A license alone may not prevent interruption without allowlisting. See YouTube’s live copyright guidance and licensed-content guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does YouTube Live accept radio audio without a visualizer?

Yes. The visualizer is an optional part of the OBS scene; OBS sends the audio and video feed to YouTube.

Can I use the visualizer itself as the stream encoder?

No. The visualizer adds graphics to the scene. OBS or another encoder sends the resulting audio-and-video feed to YouTube.
