You can run prerecorded video as a continuous YouTube livestream by keeping an encoder running on your Intel NUC, feeding it a looping or scheduled media source, and sending its output to a YouTube Live event. First confirm that your channel can livestream and check the exact NUC model’s capabilities. Then configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, test the full playback and recovery path, and plan separately for recording: a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube.

What you need before you start

  • An eligible, verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • An Intel NUC with its exact model and product code identified. Hardware media capabilities vary by processor and system configuration.
  • Encoder software that can play your prerecorded media continuously and send a live feed to YouTube. The loop or playlist setup depends on the software and operating system you choose.
  • A reliable outbound internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen bitrate, plus a plan to detect and respond to outages.
  • Prerelated video and audio that you have the rights to stream. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility and content rules still apply to prerecorded material.

1. Enable and check YouTube live streaming

Verify the channel and enable live streaming before you schedule a launch. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this step until the last minute. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.

2. Identify what your exact NUC can handle

Check the product code on the NUC and consult the technical specifications for that specific model. Do not assume every Intel NUC supports the same resolutions, codecs, or hardware encoding. Intel Quick Sync can provide hardware-assisted video encoding and decoding, but it depends on supported processor graphics being enabled; a capability reference does not guarantee that every assembled system exposes every feature. Start with Intel’s technical product specifications and Intel’s media and Quick Sync documentation.

Choose an output format the NUC and encoder can sustain continuously, not merely one the device can output briefly. No NUC-specific performance benchmark establishes a universal resolution or bitrate for this job; verify your own system with a long test.

3. Prepare a continuous prerecorded source

Install an encoder on the NUC and configure it to play the videos you want to broadcast. Depending on the selected software, this may mean a playlist, a looping media source, or a scheduled sequence. The precise controls differ, so verify them in that encoder’s documentation rather than assuming a particular OBS workflow.

Test the source behavior before connecting it to a public event. Confirm that the final file loops or advances as intended, transitions do not create gaps, audio remains continuous and synchronized, and videos with different aspect ratios display acceptably. Check what happens when a file ends or is missing; a playlist that stops at the end is not a 24/7 source.

4. Create the YouTube event and connect the encoder

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
  2. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key from the live setup.
  3. In your encoder, enter the server URL and stream key in its streaming or destination settings.
  4. Choose RTMPS when the encoder offers it. RTMPS encrypts RTMP ingest using TLS/SSL; YouTube provides instructions for retrieving the RTMPS URL and key in its RTMPS setup guide.
  5. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send content to your stream. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.

YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create or schedule the stream, copy the server URL and stream key, and start sending the feed from the selected encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

5. Set output quality and test the feed

Use YouTube’s current settings guidance and the capabilities of your exact NUC and encoder. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its supported video codec options include H.264, H.265, and AV1, subject to ingest protocol, encoder, and device support. For RTMP(S), use AAC or MP3 audio. Select a resolution and bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations rather than treating one setting as suitable for every NUC or connection. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings.

Before relying on the stream, start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the watch page is accessible to the intended audience and check both picture and sound. YouTube recommends testing, monitoring audio and video quality, and allowing spare upload capacity. Its guidance recommends 20% more upload bandwidth than the total bitrate of the stream; this is platform guidance, not a guarantee against interruptions. Review YouTube’s streaming tips.

6. Make the setup suitable for unattended operation

A 24/7 stream needs a plan for more than normal playback. Run a sustained test long enough to reveal source-end behavior, thermal or system instability, and network problems. Decide who or what will notice an outage, and test what happens after the encoder, NUC, or internet connection stops and comes back. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; restart and alert arrangements are practical requirements for an unattended setup, not an automatic guarantee from the platform.

  • Check the stream periodically for silence, a frozen image, a playlist that has ended, or a YouTube ingest interruption.
  • A UPS and Ethernet cable are optional practical additions for a fixed installation, not YouTube requirements.

YouTube warns that network disruption can break a stream. Read its streaming tips and decide how you will detect and handle a break before leaving the NUC unattended.

7. Arrange a separate recording if you need a complete archive

YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so do not rely on YouTube’s archive for a complete record of an all-day broadcast. If you need one, configure a separate recording workflow and confirm it works; account for storage capacity and the growth of large recording files. See YouTube’s livestream archiving guidance.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom What to check Next step
You cannot start the event Channel verification, live-stream activation, and any live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Complete eligibility steps and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
The encoder cannot connect Server URL, stream key, selected ingest protocol, and outbound network access. Copy the current event credentials again, use RTMPS if supported, and confirm that the connection is not blocked or interrupted.
The stream buffers or drops Actual outbound capacity, total bitrate, and network stability. Reduce the bitrate or output demands if needed, restore a stable connection, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom.
Video plays once and stops Whether the encoder’s playlist or source is configured to loop or advance. Correct the source settings and test through the end of a file and into the next playback.
No sound, distorted sound, or mismatched audio Source audio, encoder audio selection, and RTMP(S) codec compatibility. Check the source and encoder meters, then use AAC or MP3 for RTMP(S) and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
The NUC lacks the expected codec or output option Exact NUC product code, processor graphics configuration, encoder support, and selected protocol. Check model-specific Intel specifications and choose a supported output; do not infer capability from the NUC name alone.
The stream ends during an unattended run Encoder or network recovery behavior and who or what detects failure. Test restart behavior and establish an outage-monitoring and recovery plan before depending on continuous operation.

Alternative hardware and the cloud option

A dedicated hardware encoder

YouTube’s encoder list names the AJA HELO Plus and says its PlayToStream function can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Compare its purchase and operating cost, setup complexity, scheduling needs, local-control requirements, and how you will monitor and recover the stream. The cited information establishes the stated function, not an independent reliability comparison or a current price. See YouTube’s encoder list.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded video to YouTube, so your NUC, another computer, OBS, and home internet connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K at 60fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot. It includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The same features apply across plans; only billing length changes. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month; UPI and cards are accepted in India, with card checkout worldwide. See StreamNeo pricing for the available durations and details. To try the cloud setup, start your free StreamNeo day.
