Choose 30 fps if you are deciding between 25 fps and 30 fps for a YouTube 24/7 live stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API explicitly lists 30 fps as an inbound frame-rate option; it does not list 25 fps. This is the better-documented, platform-aligned choice—not a special YouTube rule for streams that run around the clock.

Why 30 fps is the safer documented choice

YouTube’s Live Streaming API lists 30fps, 60fps, and variable as inbound frame-rate values. It does not list 25fps. If you want to select a fixed rate from the two in the title, 30 fps is the option YouTube explicitly documents.

YouTube’s encoder guide says frame rates up to 60 fps are supported, but that broad statement does not confirm every individual rate below 60. Its guidance also does not establish a separate frame-rate standard for 24/7 broadcasts. The recommendation for 30 fps is therefore based on documented configuration, not a claim that it guarantees better quality or uptime than 25 fps.

Set the rest of the stream to match

Choose bitrate for the resolution and codec

Bitrate depends on both resolution and codec; do not apply one number to every stream. For example, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. That figure applies to that specific combination. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the recommendation that matches your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Use the recommended encoder settings

  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Variable frame rate: The API includes a variable option; when using it, resolution must also be variable. If you are deliberately choosing between fixed 25 and 30 fps, use the documented fixed 30 fps option instead.

Test and monitor a 24/7 stream

A continuous stream’s practical challenge is keeping the full setup stable over time, not meeting a separate 24/7 frame-rate rule. YouTube recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, and monitoring stream health while it is running. Its guidance also recommends choosing a reliable quality for the available connection and checking upload speed.

  1. Match the test to the real stream. Use the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, audio, and representative movement.
  2. Check upload capacity. Confirm the connection can sustain the bitrate required by your actual codec and resolution.
  3. Watch stream health after going live. Look for connection or encoding warnings rather than assuming the selected frame rate alone will prevent interruptions.

YouTube’s HLS live-ingestion guide says rates up to 60 fps are supported in its HLS ingestion context. It also notes that shorter media segments can reduce latency while increasing rebuffer risk and reducing encoding efficiency. Those HLS details do not establish that 25 fps is preferable for a 24/7 stream.

What 25 fps does—and does not—mean here

Apple’s HLS authoring specification lists both 25 and 30 fps among supported video-on-demand rates and recommends a natural frame rate for VOD. That is useful context for HLS video, but it is not a YouTube live-ingestion recommendation.

The official guidance cited here does not provide a controlled comparison of 25 versus 30 fps for YouTube 24/7 streaming, a quantified bandwidth saving from using 25 fps, or an uptime guarantee tied to frame rate. Do not assume 25 fps will save a particular amount of bandwidth, or that choosing either rate makes a stream more reliable by itself.
