For 1080p live ingest, use 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps or 17 Mbps for H.264 at 60 fps. If your encoder sends AV1 or H.265/HEVC, YouTube’s recommended rates are 10 Mbps at 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommended live-stream ingest bitrates, not settings for uploading a finished video. A 24/7 schedule does not require a higher bitrate; the relevant factors are codec, frame rate and resolution.
Recommended bitrate for 1080p live ingest
Choose the row that matches the codec and frame rate your encoder actually sends to YouTube. YouTube’s published recommendations are:

These figures are official recommended live ingest settings from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; the page reviewed did not state a publication year (accessed 2026). Use the 30 fps recommendation for a 30 fps stream. Choose the 60 fps value only if the stream is encoded at 60 fps.
Set up the stream for a stable feed
For a typical 1080p live encoder configuration, set resolution to 1920×1080, select the source’s actual frame rate and use the bitrate above for its codec. YouTube also recommends these related settings:

- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Protocol: RTMPS where supported.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube lists 128 kbps for stereo audio.
Check the encoder and YouTube’s current configuration screens for the available options; labels can vary by software or hardware. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast and monitoring stream health. A suitable bitrate cannot compensate for a stalled source, encoder or connection.
Calculate the upload capacity you need
The video bitrate is not the entire network load: audio and other traffic also use bandwidth. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload capacity beyond the outgoing stream bitrate. For a 14 Mbps video stream, that margin works out to 16.8 Mbps of available upload capacity before adding separate audio, backup feeds or other use on the connection. The 20% recommendation is from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance; its page reviewed did not state a publication year (accessed 2026).

Use a stable connection and check stream health during a test. YouTube warns that network disruption can break a live stream, so a speed result alone does not establish that a connection will remain stable for a continuous broadcast. Avoid saturating the upload connection with other activity while streaming.

A 24-hour broadcast is longer than YouTube’s 12-hour automatic-archive window. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its DVR guidance also says rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. These limits affect archive and rewind behavior, not the bitrate needed for live ingest.

If a dependable replay or rewind matters, plan shorter broadcast sessions and keep a local recording as a backup. Check YouTube’s current live stream archive guidance and DVR guidance when planning the schedule; the reviewed pages did not state publication years (accessed 2026).
Choose how to keep prerecorded content live
Run an encoder yourself
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming using software or hardware encoders. This gives you direct control over codec, frame rate, bitrate and source playback, but the source, encoder and internet connection need to keep operating for the stream to continue. Follow the encoder setup guidance above and use YouTube’s stream health status to check the incoming feed.

For 1080p prerecorded streams, this avoids leaving a home encoder and connection running, but you still need to choose appropriate source material and observe YouTube’s rules. A technically stable stream is not automatically eligible to stay live or be monetized. You are responsible for having the rights to the video and audio you broadcast and for following YouTube’s policies. Repeatedly looping prerecorded material does not make copyrighted or otherwise ineligible content permissible. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies, especially if you rely on an archive or intend to monetize the channel.

Troubleshoot common stream problems
- Stream health reports insufficient bitrate: Confirm that the encoder’s codec and frame rate match the row you selected, and that it is sending the intended bitrate. Check whether other traffic is using the upload connection.
- Stream drops or becomes unstable: Check upload stability and leave the recommended headroom. YouTube notes that network disruptions can break a stream; test the complete source-to-encoder setup and monitor stream health.
- Quality looks poor despite using the recommended rate: Verify that the source itself is 1080p and that the encoder is not set to a lower resolution or frame rate. YouTube transcodes live ingest for different playback formats and devices, so viewers may receive a playback rendition different from the incoming feed.
- The broadcast has no dependable replay or rewind: Check whether the session exceeded 12 hours. Long streams may not be archived, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable; divide the schedule into shorter sessions if replay matters.
