If your cells contain direct image URLs, enter =IMAGE(A2) in the next column and fill the formula down. Google Sheets displays the image inside each formula cell. A regular webpage URL is not necessarily an image URL, though: IMAGE does not automatically find a page’s preview image.
Generate thumbnails from direct image URLs
- Put one image URL in each row of column A, starting with A2.
- In B2, enter
=IMAGE(A2). - Fill or copy the formula down column B for the rest of your list.
- Adjust the column width and row heights to make the thumbnails easier to view. The formula does not resize cells automatically.
Google describes IMAGE as a function that “Inserts an image into a cell.” Its syntax is IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]); the URL can be quoted text or a cell reference, and the default display mode is 1. See Google’s IMAGE function documentation.
Choose how each image fits its cell

For custom sizing, mode 4 requires a height and width. None of the modes changes the sheet’s row height or column width for you. Google’s image help also distinguishes images placed in cells from images placed over cells; IMAGE is the formula-based in-cell option.
Why a webpage URL may not produce a thumbnail
=IMAGE(A2) expects an image URL that Sheets can load. If A2 links to a normal webpage, the formula does not inspect the page and extract its Open Graph image or another preview image. You need to supply a direct, accessible image URL in the formula’s input.

Google specifically says that URLs hosted at drive.google.com cannot be used directly with IMAGE. For other hosts, redirects, authenticated images, or signed URLs, Google’s documentation does not promise universal compatibility. Test the actual image URL in a small sample before filling a large range.
When Apps Script is useful
For a simple list of image URLs, the built-in formula is the shortest approach. Apps Script is worth considering when you need repeatable automation, a custom menu, or a scheduled process. Google documents ways to automate tasks in Sheets and to use macros and add-ons, but those capabilities do not establish a universal custom function that turns arbitrary webpage URLs into thumbnails. You still need a way to obtain a usable image URL for each page.

Troubleshoot missing or unusable images
- The cell shows an error or no image: Check that the cell referenced by the formula contains a direct image URL rather than an ordinary webpage URL.
- The image is hosted on Google Drive: Google says a
drive.google.comURL is not a supported direct input forIMAGE. - The image host requires access: Confirm that the URL is available to Sheets. Google notes that import functions can involve access prompts and traffic limits for external requests; test a few rows first. See Google’s Import functions guidance.
- A redirect, signed URL, or authentication is involved: The reviewed Google documentation does not guarantee that every such URL works. Check whether the URL is still valid and whether Sheets can retrieve the image without a login or other special access.
- The thumbnail is clipped or too large: Choose a suitable display mode, then set the row height and column width yourself. The formula will not resize the cells.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can IMAGE create thumbnails from a list of ordinary webpage links?
No. Its input needs to be an image URL that Sheets can load; it does not automatically find a webpage’s preview image.
