Keep your encoder sending video continuously and show an active standby scene while one clip hands off to the next. A looping motion graphic or animated waiting slate prevents the output from simply holding the previous clip’s final frame. YouTube does not provide a specific “prevent frozen frame between videos” control; the transition is handled by your encoder or streaming workflow.
Why a 24/7 stream freezes between videos
In an encoder-based YouTube stream, your streaming software or hardware produces the video feed that YouTube receives. If the outgoing clip ends before the next one starts, the encoder may have no new picture to send during the gap, leaving the last frame on screen. This is a practical explanation of the symptom, not a diagnosis YouTube identifies as a specific failure mode.
A freeze limited to clip boundaries points first to the playlist or media-source handoff. If the picture also freezes during clips, investigate the encoder, network, and playback separately. A frozen viewer image alone does not establish whether the cause is a transition, connection, encoder, or media file.
How to prevent the frozen frame
- Keep the encoder session connected. Do not stop and restart the YouTube live feed for each clip. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents a continuous 24/7-feed example in which the encoder continues transmitting after a separate broadcast ends: YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcasts.
- Add an active standby scene. Prepare a short looping motion background, animated “back shortly” slate, or other suitable video. It should produce changing picture rather than hold the previous clip’s last frame.
- Make the standby output active during the handoff. Switch to it before the current clip ends, or make sure it is already providing output while the next file opens. Then switch to the next clip. The precise scene and playlist controls depend on the encoder you use; YouTube does not prescribe a particular OBS playlist setting for this symptom.
- Rehearse with the actual files. Check the outgoing clip, standby scene, next clip, and audio in sequence. Watch for gaps, unintended overlaps, black frames, or audio that stops or doubles during the change.
- Test before the production stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event: YouTube Help: encoder settings for live streaming.
This workflow is an implementation recommendation based on the encoder’s role and the need for a continuous feed; it is not a named official YouTube fix. Test it with your specific software and playlist.

Check encoder settings and stream health
For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), recommends RTMPS, and says to choose a bitrate your internet connection can sustain. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are ingest and stream-health settings; they do not create a standby scene or determine how clips transition.
Compare what you see in the local encoder preview with YouTube’s stream preview and health indicators. YouTube documents that an active stream status means its servers are receiving data from the encoder, and its API describes preview testing as separate from the live broadcast state: YouTube Live Streaming API: streams.

If the stream freezes during clips too
When freezing is not limited to transitions, check whether the encoder is keeping up with its configured bitrate and whether the source continues playing.
- Look at OBS dropped frames and connection status. OBS says an increasing “Dropped frames” counter with a yellow or red connection square indicates a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the set bitrate; OBS may drop video frames to avoid buffering. See OBS: dropped frames and connection issues.
- Compare the local preview and YouTube preview. If the local preview freezes too, focus on source playback or encoder load. If it remains smooth while YouTube’s preview freezes, check connection stability and stream-health messages.
- Separate transition tests from connection tests. Test a single clip, then the full clip-to-standby-to-clip sequence. This helps distinguish a recurring handoff gap from a problem that affects the whole stream.
- Review stream health during the event. Use YouTube’s warnings and messages alongside the encoder’s indicators; a viewer-side still frame alone does not identify the cause.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to avoid keeping a local computer on and managing each handoff yourself, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube stream running from uploaded videos. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops your uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
