To reduce CPU use when OBS loops video to YouTube Live, first check the encoder in Settings → Output: switch from x264 to a compatible hardware encoder if one is available. Then, if you use an OBS Media Source, try its hardware-decoding option; simplify the scene and test before changing output quality. Looping is a playback setting, not a documented cause of high CPU use by itself.
Start by identifying what is using resources
High CPU use can come from software encoding, media playback decoding, or other work in a complex scene. Rendering or encoding lag can also involve the GPU or the scene as a whole. Check OBS’s log and performance stats rather than treating every dropped frame as proof that the CPU is the problem. OBS says CPU demands vary considerably with the encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity.
Looping controls whether playback repeats; OBS’s Media Sources guidance documents the loop setting but does not say looping itself raises CPU usage. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it helps.
Check that the video source is set to loop
One video file: Media Source
- In OBS, select the Media Source in the Sources list and open its Properties.
- Confirm that Loop is enabled, then apply the setting.
- If available, try Use hardware decoding when available. This may shift decoding work to a compatible GPU video decoder. It is optional, and the result depends on the GPU and file format.
Hardware decoding affects video playback. It is not the same as choosing a hardware encoder for the outgoing YouTube stream.

- Install VLC, then add or select a VLC Video source in OBS and configure its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist in the source’s properties.
- Match VLC’s architecture to OBS: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.

Move stream encoding off the CPU when possible
- Open Settings → Output in OBS.
- Find the streaming encoder setting. If it is set to x264, check whether your system offers a compatible hardware option.
- Choose an available hardware encoder, such as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, or Intel Quick Sync, and apply the change.
- Run a representative test and check both visual quality and stream health before relying on the setting.
Hardware encoders shift encoding work to a specialized component, but the available options depend on the GPU and operating system. They are not guaranteed to lower total system utilization. OBS also notes that older hardware encoders can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding with the default veryfast preset, so compare the result at your intended settings. Simplify the scene before lowering stream quality
- Remove sources that are not needed in the live scene.
- Reduce costly filters and simplify complex browser sources or overlays.
- Use a video file resolution appropriate for your intended stream output.
- If those changes are not enough, try lowering OBS output resolution or frame rate and test again.
These changes can reduce workload, but there is no universal CPU-saving percentage: the effect depends on the encoder, output settings, source media, and scene. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide explains the interacting workload factors.
Keep YouTube’s stream settings intact while tuning
Do not change bitrate or keyframes simply to chase a lower CPU reading. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals no longer than four seconds. Its suggested bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for your specific output.

- Use the bitrate guidance for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static or silent section.
- Watch OBS stats and YouTube’s stream health during the test. YouTube recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health.
- Adjust one variable at a time, then test again.
The OBS Quick Start Guide describes its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a way to optimize OBS settings for streaming or recording; it does not replace a test using your actual media and scene.
Troubleshoot common symptoms

OBS’s System Requirements page cautions that requirements depend on the chosen encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity; meeting baseline system requirements alone does not ensure a particular streaming workload will run well.
