For one uncomplicated prerecorded YouTube stream on a minimal Linux VPS, 2 GB of RAM is a sensible starting estimate—not an official YouTube or FFmpeg minimum, and not a guarantee. A lean setup that stream-copies compatible video and audio may work with 1 GB, but leaves less memory for Linux and supporting processes. The actual need depends chiefly on whether FFmpeg copies or re-encodes the media, whether it applies filters, how many streams run at once, and what else shares the server.
What the RAM estimates mean
iTechGuides (2026) gives 2 GB as a cautious practical starting point for one FFmpeg process on a minimal Linux VPS, and says 1 GB may be adequate when compatible video and audio are stream-copied without filters. These are secondary rules of thumb, not official requirements or tested guarantees. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not specify a VPS RAM minimum.
There is no supported formula that converts resolution or frame rate into a fixed RAM requirement. Begin with headroom, then measure the real workload before relying on a continuous stream.
Why the FFmpeg workload matters more than “live”
Stream copy
If the prerecorded file’s encoded tracks already match the output you intend to send, FFmpeg can pass them through without decoding and re-encoding. This is the leanest case described by the available RAM guidance, although the operating system and other processes still need memory.

Transcoding and filters
When the input must be converted to a different codec or format, or processed with filters, FFmpeg has more work to do. The evidence does not quantify a fixed RAM increase for a particular resolution, frame rate, codec, or filter. Budget more room and watch CPU and memory during a representative run.
Multiple streams and shared services
Each simultaneous output and every service running on the VPS contributes to total resource use. Assess the whole workload—not just the FFmpeg process—including the operating system, background services, CPU allocation, network capacity, and disk space for the source video.

Check the stream settings and VPS alongside RAM
YouTube’s published encoder settings help determine whether the file and output are compatible; they do not establish a memory minimum. Its guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.
For H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not RAM figures or proof that a particular VPS uplink can sustain the stream.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate. Check the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity and network reliability, as well as CPU allocation and storage. A server can have ample RAM and still fail to deliver a stable stream if another resource is inadequate.
YouTube recommends encrypted delivery using RTMPS. Its guidance also recommends testing with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health while live: YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube streaming tips.

How to size and validate an Indian VPS
- Start with the workload. Establish whether FFmpeg will stream-copy or transcode, whether it will use filters, how many outputs will run simultaneously, and what other services share the VPS.
- Use 2 GB as a cautious initial allocation for one uncomplicated stream. Treat it as a practical estimate from iTechGuides (2026), not an official minimum or guarantee. Consider 1 GB only for a very lean stream-copy setup that you can test carefully.
- Check the provider’s actual plan. Confirm its current RAM and CPU allocation, sustained outbound transfer, network reliability, disk space, operating system, and terms for continuous use. Plan details and terms can change; do not infer them from the word “VPS” or from RAM alone.
- Test the real file and intended output. Run the actual FFmpeg workload with the settings you plan to use. Observe memory and CPU under sustained operation, and check YouTube’s stream health. A brief idle check or a different sample file does not validate the continuous workload.
- Add resources when measurements or workload warrant it. Increase RAM or CPU capacity if monitoring shows pressure, or if you add transcoding, filters, concurrent streams, or other server services. Recheck bandwidth and disk needs when changing the stream settings or source files.
- Confirm YouTube eligibility before depending on the stream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days to enable live streaming. Review YouTube’s live-streaming enablement requirements.
Common problems and what to check
- The VPS runs out of memory or the process stops: Check memory use during the actual job and account for the OS and other services. A 1 GB server has less headroom; consider a larger allocation, especially if transcoding, filtering, or running multiple outputs.
- The stream is unstable despite available RAM: Check CPU load, sustained outbound capacity, and network reliability. Compare the total output bitrate with available upload bandwidth and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- YouTube reports a format or stream-setting problem: Verify the video and audio codecs, CBR, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- The account cannot start a live stream: Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days.
- A test works but a continuous stream later falters: Repeat testing with the intended file and sustained workload, then monitor stream health during operation. A short test alone cannot establish that the VPS will remain stable indefinitely.
