A 24/7 YouTube radio station does not need a special speed simply because it runs all day. Your connection must reliably sustain the upload bitrate set in your encoder for as long as the stream is live, with spare capacity for other network activity. YouTube’s general H.264 recommendations start at 8 Mbps for 720p and range from 14 to 17 Mbps for 1080p, but YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate requirement for a static-image radio stream.
Start with the encoder bitrate, not the station’s running time
A stream’s instantaneous upload load is set by its encoder settings, including resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. A stream that runs for 24 hours uses that upload capacity continuously; its duration does not multiply the bitrate requirement. The practical target is a connection that can sustain the chosen stream bitrate reliably while leaving room for other devices and upload activity.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends the following H.264 bitrates for these common video settings:

These figures are encoder bitrates, not minimum ISP plan speeds or guarantees that a connection will hold a live stream. YouTube’s guidance also lists minimum settings; do not mistake a minimum for its recommended bitrate. The cited general settings are from YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” page, whose publication year is not stated.

What to use for a radio stream with a static image
If your station sends audio with a still image, YouTube’s general video recommendations are a reference point, not a custom requirement for that format. The official settings page does not specify an ideal bitrate for an audio-radio stream with a static image. Use the bitrate configured in your encoder as the actual network load, and do not assume that one number is guaranteed for every radio setup.
If you are choosing a conventional H.264 video output, the table above gives YouTube’s recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate. If your encoder uses a different codec or a specialized audio-and-image setup, check the settings you are actually sending and test them rather than applying the H.264 figures as a universal rule.

Check whether your upload connection can sustain it
- Choose the stream settings. Decide the resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder bitrate before estimating the connection you need.
- Test upload performance under realistic conditions. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test while the devices and workloads that normally share the connection are active, if possible.
- Leave spare capacity. Your measured upload should exceed the stream’s configured bitrate so other uploads and normal variation do not consume all available capacity. YouTube does not give a universal safety multiplier, so avoid treating a fixed multiple as an official requirement.
- Run a representative test stream. Before the station’s regular broadcast, test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages while it runs.
- Watch the connection during operation. If other household or studio activity causes the available upload to dip, reduce competing uploads or choose a lower stream bitrate and test again.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. A speed test is a useful check, but it is not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable throughout a continuous broadcast.
Practical setup notes
- A wired Ethernet connection can connect a dedicated streaming computer or encoder to the router, but it does not increase the upload capacity provided by your internet service.
- Check for cloud backups, file uploads, video calls, or other devices that may use upload capacity while the station is live.
- Use the same encoder settings in your test that you intend to use for the regular stream; a test at a lower bitrate does not confirm performance at a higher one.
