Choose OBS if you are capturing live gameplay and want to arrange scenes, sources, audio, and recording in a graphical interface. Choose FFmpeg if you already have prerecorded gameplay files and want a scripted process to loop and send them to YouTube. Neither choice alone guarantees a complete, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast or a complete YouTube archive. For a long-running channel, plan for stream recovery and keep an independently verified local recording if the VOD matters.

OBS vs. FFmpeg: which fits your channel?

Decision OBS Studio FFmpeg
Best fit Live gameplay capture and a visual workflow for scenes, sources, stream controls, and recording. Command-line media processing, repeatable scripts, or looping existing video files.
Capturing gameplay OBS supports game, window, and capture-card sources within scenes. FFmpeg processes supported media inputs; its input-loop option is not a graphical game-capture workflow.
Prerecorded continuous feed A media file can be used as a scene source, but a full 24/7 playlist setup takes additional configuration. -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely; you still need to configure YouTube ingest and keep the process supervised.
Local VOD backup Can record automatically while streaming, with recording path and settings configured separately. Can script recording, but you must validate the output container and failure recovery yourself.
Operational effort Generally more approachable if you prefer a GUI, but still needs setup and monitoring. Requires command-line and script management; gives a technical operator more control over media processing.
Reconnect and continuity Has an automatic reconnect setting, but reconnect cannot prevent every outage. The cited FFmpeg options establish looping and pacing, not a complete YouTube reconnect or process-supervision system.

The interface and feature comparison above is not a benchmark or hands-on test. OBS’s overview documents its scene and source model, while FFmpeg’s manual documents media-processing options. OBS Studio Overview Guide · FFmpeg Documentation

Set up OBS for live gameplay and a local recording

  1. Create or select the broadcast in YouTube Studio. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream and copy the server URL and stream key from its stream settings. YouTube says previous stream settings, including a stream key, can be reused. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it or include it in public screenshots. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
  2. Enter YouTube’s ingest details in OBS. Open OBS stream settings and enter the server URL and stream key. Use RTMPS where available for encrypted transport. YouTube’s setup guide explains how to connect an encoder and start a broadcast.
  3. Build scenes around the gameplay. In OBS, create scenes and add sources for the game, audio devices, overlays, or an optional capture device. A capture card is relevant for a console or external video source; it is not a prerequisite for capturing PC gameplay directly. OBS describes scenes and sources in its overview guide.
  4. Choose a resolution and frame rate your system can sustain. Match the output to the game, computer, and upload connection. OBS cautions that 60-fps streaming can be much more demanding than 30 fps, so test performance before committing to it. YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendations are listed below.
  5. Configure recording separately from streaming. Set a recording path and recording preset in OBS, and enable automatic recording while streaming if appropriate. Confirm that the destination has enough free space and test a recording before relying on it as your VOD backup.
  6. Test the complete scene and reconnect behavior. Check gameplay motion, audio, and overlays with a test broadcast. Configure OBS’s automatic reconnect as appropriate, then test disconnection behavior. Reconnect is a recovery aid, not a guarantee that every interruption will be recovered.
  7. Start the broadcast through YouTube’s control room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room and select Go live. Monitor YouTube’s stream health while broadcasting. YouTube’s encoder setup guide

Loop prerecorded gameplay with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is a fit when the source is an existing gameplay recording, rather than a game you are capturing interactively. Its official manual defines -stream_loop -1 as infinite input looping and -re as reading an input at its native frame rate. The manual describes -re as useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. These options are building blocks, not a complete 24/7 YouTube setup.

  • Confirm that the input file decodes correctly and that its codecs and container are compatible with your planned output and YouTube ingest settings.
  • Use -stream_loop -1 to repeat the input. Use -re when you need to read it at native frame rate for live output timing.
  • Decide whether to copy the streams or re-encode. FFmpeg’s -c copy avoids decoding and re-encoding, so it is fast and does not reduce quality, but it can fail when the target container needs information that is missing from the source.
  • Provide the YouTube server URL and stream key to the encoder, and keep the key private. Configure process supervision and recovery separately; the cited FFmpeg manual options do not supply a complete reconnect service.
  • Test the chosen input, output, and recording path before relying on the process for a continuous channel. Validate that the resulting local file plays and that you can restart the broadcast after an interruption.

See the FFmpeg Documentation for the exact behavior of its options. A looped file does not itself capture new gameplay, supervise a failed process, or ensure a complete YouTube archive.

Choose YouTube bitrate, codec, and keyframe settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport and advises testing upload bitrate and stream health. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommendations, not measured connection requirements or guaranteed results. Check the current guidance before configuring a new stream because platform recommendations can change. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations

Output H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 34 Mbps 6 Mbps 24 Mbps

These codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026. Test your actual upload capacity and leave headroom for normal connection variation; select a quality your connection can sustain reliably rather than treating a recommended bitrate as a universal requirement.

Plan for a usable VOD, not just a live signal

YouTube says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its help page does not promise that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived completely. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete VOD. If preserving the recording matters, make a local copy, test the recording independently, and check both the saved file and YouTube archive after a broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup and archive guidance · OBS recording guidance

Troubleshoot common continuous-stream problems

YouTube does not receive the stream

  • Likely cause: The server URL or stream key was entered incorrectly, or the stream was not started in YouTube’s control room.
  • Fix: Recheck the encoder’s server URL and key against the stream selected in YouTube Studio. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.

The image stutters or YouTube reports poor stream health

  • Likely cause: The selected bitrate exceeds what the upload connection can sustain, or the computer cannot encode the chosen resolution and frame rate consistently.
  • Fix: Test upload bitrate, check YouTube stream health, and reduce output demands if needed. Compare the settings with YouTube’s codec-specific recommendations rather than using one bitrate for every setup.

OBS drops out and does not resume cleanly

  • Likely cause: A connection interruption or other failure that automatic reconnect cannot resolve.
  • Fix: Test OBS reconnect behavior before a long broadcast and monitor the stream. Treat reconnect as a setting to validate, not a promise of uninterrupted service.

The FFmpeg loop works, but the broadcast stops

  • Likely cause: The loop option repeats the input but does not supervise the FFmpeg process or provide a complete recovery plan.
  • Fix: Validate the media and output configuration, and arrange separate process supervision and restart handling. Test the recovery path instead of assuming -stream_loop -1 handles a stopped encoder.

The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete

  • Likely cause: A long broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive condition, or the local recording was not configured or verified.
  • Fix: Check the local recording path and resulting file, and verify YouTube’s archive after the stream. Keep a tested local recording when completeness matters.
