You can keep recorded indie game playthroughs running as a continuous YouTube live stream by sending them through an encoder to a YouTube live event. Before building the schedule, plan around three constraints: YouTube may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours, copyright checks can interrupt a live broadcast, and monetization is not guaranteed for a repetitive loop.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Recorded gameplay files you have the right to broadcast, plus any music and other third-party assets cleared for this use.
- An encoder on a computer or hardware setup capable of sending the video and audio feed to YouTube. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as suitable for gameplay and overlays; it does not require a particular paid encoder.
- A plan for session lengths and local recordings if you need dependable replays.
Do not start by assuming an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast is the best design. If you want YouTube’s automatic archive, bounded sessions and local backups are safer.
Set up a YouTube live event and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming ahead of launch. Verify the channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Set its title, description, visibility, and other event metadata. If scheduling, you can share the event’s watch-page URL with viewers.
- Copy the ingest details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The key is a credential that directs the encoder’s feed to your event; do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Load the recorded playthrough. Configure the encoder or playback workflow to send the recorded video and its intended audio as the live feed. For a channel made from multiple recordings, arrange the files in the intended sequence and confirm how the chosen setup advances between them. The YouTube event receives the encoder feed; it does not itself turn a folder of recordings into a playlist.
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder feed and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm that video, game audio, commentary, and overlays are present and intelligible before starting the event for viewers.
- Test the whole handoff. Run a test session long enough to check transitions between files, the end-of-list behavior, and whether the encoder continues sending video. Also verify that any local recording is actually being written and can be played back.
YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop. They may remove manual steps, but test them with your encoder and event configuration before relying on them for unattended operation.
Design continuous programming around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That means a single stream running continuously for a day is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube replay.

If retaining replays matters, divide the programming into separate sessions shorter than 12 hours, then start a new event for the next session. This is a practical way to work within YouTube’s stated limit, not a guarantee that every replay will be saved. Keep a local recording as a separate backup and verify the resulting files. An external drive can be useful for storing source recordings and backups, but YouTube does not require or endorse a particular storage device.
Clear game, music, and other rights before broadcasting
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies material that remains in the broadcast, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. You are responsible for having the rights needed for the material you stream, including music.

- Check the publisher’s streaming policy for each game. Do not assume that owning a game or recording your playthrough gives you every right needed for a continuous public broadcast.
- Review the soundtrack, menu music, cutscenes, mods, overlays, and any separate assets included in the recording. A game publisher’s permission does not necessarily clear separately owned music or other material.
- If you have a separate licence for third-party content, ask the rights owner whether your channel needs to be added to its Content ID allowlist. A licence by itself may not prevent a live interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel.
- Keep records of permissions and licences so you can identify the rights basis for each part of the stream if a claim or interruption occurs.
Whether a specific game’s soundtrack or publisher policy permits your planned use depends on that game and the relevant rights holders; there is no universal clearance rule for indie games.
Make the format distinct, and treat monetization as uncertain
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. Monetized content should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, or repetitive, and should offer materially varied substance or creative, educational, or other value. YouTube has not given a definitive ruling on every version of a continuous recorded-playthrough channel, so approval cannot be promised.

A channel has a clearer editorial identity when its sessions are meaningfully distinct: for example, different games, routes, challenge runs, creator commentary, or deliberate curation that explains why the collection is useful to viewers. These are ways to make the creator’s contribution and each session’s value apparent, not a formula that guarantees monetization. YouTube reviews channel-level context such as its main theme, most-viewed and newest videos, share of watch time, metadata, and About section.
On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified its policy by renaming “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content”; the clarification says repetitive or mass-produced content is covered, while the reused-content policy was unchanged. Copyright clearance and monetization review are separate questions: satisfying one does not settle the other. Joining the YouTube Partner Program and enabling features also require eligibility and policy compliance. YouTube lists advertising, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers among possible live-stream revenue features, each with its own requirements; none assures that a continuous stream will earn revenue.

Choose an operating model for the stream
Run an encoder yourself
A local encoder gives you direct control over playback, overlays, and the live feed. It also means the computer, encoder, source files, and network connection must keep working while the stream is live. YouTube’s setup information does not establish a single required encoder, bitrate, or hardware configuration for every gameplay file and connection, so use the encoder’s guidance and YouTube’s live health feedback for your setup rather than applying an unsupported universal setting.
Use a cloud service for playback
YouTube’s encoder information lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for continuous prerecorded streams. That listing is not an endorsement or a finding that the service is necessary or suitable; check any provider’s current features, pricing, terms, and platform compatibility before choosing it.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The event will not accept a live feed: Check whether live streaming is enabled, whether first-time activation is still pending, and whether the channel has a current restriction. Confirm that the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the intended event.
- The preview is blank or has no sound: Check the encoder’s selected video and audio sources, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before starting for viewers. Verify the recording itself has the expected tracks.
- The stream stops between playthroughs: Check the playback sequence and end-of-list behavior in the encoder workflow. Run a test through a file transition and confirm that the encoder continues sending a feed after one recording ends.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: Review any platform notice and identify the flagged third-party material. Resolve the rights issue or remove the material; if separately licensed content is involved, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting.
- A long broadcast has no complete replay: Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter sessions for future archives and retain local recordings rather than relying on one all-day YouTube replay.
- The replay or local backup is missing: Check the event archive and the encoder’s local recording destination, and test playback of backup files during setup. A local recording is a resilience measure, not a substitute for checking that the recording was successfully created.
- Monetization is rejected or unavailable: Review channel-level eligibility and policy notices, then assess whether the channel’s videos are clearly original, varied, and valuable rather than interchangeable loops. No setup change guarantees approval.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps playback running without a computer or home connection staying on; it supports uploaded video as-is up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and gives the first day free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
