Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a typical stereo FFmpeg stream to YouTube Live, set AAC audio to 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz. Add -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 to FFmpeg’s output options. The recommendation is based on audio channel layout—not whether the stream is aimed at children or runs around the clock.
Recommended FFmpeg audio settings for stereo
Use YouTube Help’s stereo recommendation: AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz for live audio over RTMP or RTMPS. In an FFmpeg command, place these options among the output options for the stream:
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-c:a aacselects AAC audio encoding.-b:a 128ksets the audio bitrate to 128 kilobits per second.-ar 44100sets the sample rate to 44,100 Hz.
FFmpeg documents -b:a as the audio bitrate option and -ar as the audio sample-rate option. These settings configure audio; they do not set the video resolution or video bitrate.
Choose the bitrate for the channel layout
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists two audio configurations. Match the setting to the audio you are actually sending rather than choosing a bitrate based on the audience category.

| Channel layout | YouTube-listed audio bitrate | Codec guidance for RTMP/RTMPS | Sample rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 128 kbps | AAC or MP3 is supported; AAC is used in the FFmpeg example above. | 44.1 kHz recommended for stereo |
| 5.1 surround | 384 kbps | AAC only for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS | Not stated in the cited YouTube recommendation |
The 128 kbps setting is for stereo, not a universal value for every channel layout. If sending 5.1, configure AAC and use the listed 384 kbps bitrate. Do not treat a stereo source as 5.1 merely to use a higher bitrate.
Apply the settings and test the actual output
- Check the source layout. Confirm whether the audio you intend to send is stereo or 5.1. Use the matching YouTube bitrate recommendation.
- Add audio options to the FFmpeg output. For stereo, include
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100in the output options. Keep these as output settings for the stream you are sending to YouTube. - Run a representative test. Test with audio and video similar to the planned broadcast before relying on a long-running stream. A short test can reveal encoding or ingest issues before they persist in a 24/7 broadcast.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. While the test is live, monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and any audio configuration notices. Resolve warnings and confirm the ingest is healthy rather than assuming the command alone guarantees correct audio.
YouTube’s live encoder guidance does not specify a different audio bitrate for children’s content or for a 24/7 duration. Its stated audio recommendations are organized by channel layout. For an ordinary stereo stream, 128 kbps is the documented starting point; validate the running stream before depending on it continuously.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports an audio configuration warning: Check the actual channel layout and compare it with the configured bitrate and codec. For stereo, use AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; for 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC at 384 kbps.
- The command is set to 128k but the stream is not healthy: A bitrate value by itself does not validate the full audio/video ingest. Run a representative test and inspect YouTube’s stream-health information and audio notices for the specific issue.
- Settings seem ineffective: Verify that the audio options are applied to the FFmpeg output stream sent to YouTube, not only to an input or an unrelated output.
- A 24/7 stream is being configured differently because it is for children: The cited YouTube encoder guidance does not establish a separate audio bitrate for either children’s programming or continuous duration. Use the layout-specific recommendation and check the real ingest.
