If your encoder crashes, first check the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. If it is still active, restart the encoder, reconnect it to that event using its YouTube server URL and stream key, then confirm YouTube is receiving audio and video before telling viewers the stream has recovered. If the event has ended, check its archive and decide whether to start a new event; YouTube does not document a universal crash-recovery window or guarantee that an ended event can be reopened.

Check whether the event is still live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Go Live / the Live Control Room. Check the event’s status: it may still be live, waiting for an encoder feed, or ended. Exact labels can change.
  2. If possible, open the viewer-facing watch page too. The event’s current state—not a fixed timer after a crash—determines whether reconnecting to the same event is an option.
  3. If the event is still active or awaiting a feed, try reconnecting the original encoder to that event. If it has ended, treat recovery as a new-event decision rather than assuming the old event can be reopened. YouTube’s encoder guide describes stopping transmission as ending a stream, but does not promise a way to reopen that ended event. YouTube’s encoder setup and live-stream guide.

When an event remains active, a successful reconnect may preserve its existing watch page. If you need a new event, viewers may need a new link. Check the old event’s archive separately either way.

Reconnect the encoder to an active event

  1. Open the event’s stream settings in Live Control Room. Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key for the intended event. In the encoder, use those values in its YouTube or custom-server connection settings. YouTube describes the stream key as a password/address for the encoder connection; a reusable custom key can be used where configured. YouTube’s stream-key settings guide.
  2. Restart the encoder and reconnect. Make sure it is sending the intended video and audio sources and is pointed at the correct event. Avoid resetting the key as a first step: copy or update it in the encoder if needed, and reset it only when it needs replacement, such as if it may be compromised.
  3. Check for an incoming signal. Confirm the encoder reports output and that Live Control Room shows a preview or otherwise indicates it is receiving the feed. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s guide says to wait for the preview and click Go live when applicable. Do not announce recovery until you have verified the viewer-facing stream and audio/video.

The reconnect procedure is an operational approach based on YouTube’s encoder connection instructions, not a guarantee that every crashed event remains open. YouTube does not specify a universal reconnect grace period.

If reconnection fails, troubleshoot both encoder and network

  • Encoder will not start or YouTube receives no signal: use a current encoder version, check its error messages, and confirm that the server URL and stream key match the intended event. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends getting or copying the stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder when a third-party encoder fails to start. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting.
  • Encoder output looks or sounds poor: inspect the source, encoder output quality, dashboard errors, and CPU load. If you have a local recording, review it for audio or video problems. A local recording can help diagnose the problem, but it cannot fill a gap in the live broadcast unless that footage was actually recorded.
  • Encoder output appears healthy, but YouTube still has no feed: investigate the outbound internet connection and test connection strength. YouTube advises that available upload capacity exceed the stream bitrate; for a primary and backup feed, its recommendation is capacity for both streams plus 20% headroom. This is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee against network interruptions. YouTube streaming tips.
  • You use a provider login instead of a stream key: YouTube directs users of third-party software that connects through account login to contact that software provider’s support.

If the event ended, preserve what is available and decide whether to restart

  1. Check YouTube Studio’s Live tab for the event archive, and check any local recording.
  2. If a new broadcast is needed, select or create an event in Live Control Room, configure its server URL and stream key in the encoder, and verify the preview before going live where applicable.
  3. Tell viewers plainly when the stream resumed and whether an archive is available. Do not describe the broadcast as uninterrupted if there was a gap.

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived and surfaced in Studio’s Live tab. An archive preserves material that was transmitted; it does not recreate footage that was neither streamed nor locally recorded. YouTube’s encoder guide.

Prepare a failover before the next stream

YouTube recommends testing encoder failover rather than assuming a backup will work. Its Help guidance says: “For test encoder failover, stop the primary encoder or unplug its Ethernet cable. Make sure the player rolls over to the backup encoder.” This test checks whether the player switches to the backup; it is not a promise of zero interruption. YouTube also recommends checking that local archive files are growing, that the event is accessible from channel/watch pages and mobile, and that audio and video remain healthy. YouTube live-streaming tips.

  • Run a controlled failover test before an important broadcast and verify what viewers actually see.
  • Monitor upload capacity against the combined bitrate of primary and backup feeds, plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  • For a production setup, YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value streams; a separate backup hardware encoder is a preparedness option. It will not restore media missing from a stream that has already failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reconnect OBS after it crashes?

If the YouTube event is still active or awaiting a feed, restart OBS and reconnect it using that event’s server URL and stream key. Check Live Control Room and the viewer page to confirm the feed has returned.

Can YouTube restore the part that was missing during the crash?

No. An archive or local recording can preserve recorded portions, but it cannot reconstruct footage that was neither transmitted nor recorded.
