The right replacement depends on what the PC does: loops prerecorded videos, runs an encoder with scenes and overlays, or handles a camera or other live input. Set up the cloud feed alongside the current stream, verify video and audio in YouTube, and only then cut over.
First identify what the spare PC is doing
Before choosing a cloud service, write down the PC’s role and everything the stream depends on. Moving prerecorded video is different from moving a camera feed or a production built from live sources.
- Prerecorded video or playlist: The PC may simply play files in a loop and send the output to YouTube. A specialist continuous-stream service may fit this more directly than a general-purpose media pipeline.
- Scenes, overlays, mixing, or interaction: If you use OBS or another encoder to compose sources or control a production, a cloud computer running encoder software may preserve that workflow, but you still manage the machine and its recovery.
- Camera or other live input: Identify how that input reaches the encoder. A physical camera or capture workflow cannot be moved to the cloud merely by copying the PC’s software; the cloud service needs a way to receive the live feed.
- Forwarding an existing feed: If the PC relays another encoder’s output, map that upstream input and the YouTube destination separately.
Record the current resolution, frame rate, audio setup, encoder settings, stream destination, and any local recording or backup process. These are the details you will need to reproduce or deliberately change.
Choose the cloud operating model
“Cloud streaming service” can mean several different things. A cloud VM gives you a remote computer; a managed media service gives you building blocks for a broadcast pipeline; a specialist service may handle continuous prerecorded-video looping. They are not interchangeable.

To compare options, consider whether your source is prerecorded or live, whether you need an encoder application, how you will recover from input or pipeline failures, whether packaging and a CDN are actually required, your tolerance for latency and buffering, and your recording and archive needs. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, and it matters less when you do not interact with viewers.
Prepare YouTube and the cloud destination
- Open YouTube Studio and select the intended stream in Live Control Room. Use that stream’s displayed URL and stream key in the cloud encoder or service. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: do not include it in public configuration or screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the cloud service.
- Use the exact destination shown by YouTube. Do not assume a generic ingest address is right for your stream. If your encoder supports RTMPS, select the lock icon in Live Control Room to reveal the RTMPS URL, then configure that exact URL. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL and recommends it as a secure way to stream.
- Recreate the source and output settings. For a PC-based encoder, make sure the cloud machine can access the same files and inputs, and configure the appropriate scene, audio, and output settings. For a managed service, map its input, processing, and output to the YouTube ingest destination. Specific settings depend on the encoder and pipeline you choose; do not copy settings from an unrelated service.
- Keep the source available. A cloud encoder cannot play a file it cannot access or relay an input it cannot receive. Confirm that uploaded or mounted files, credentials, and any upstream live feed will remain available for the whole run.
Test the switch before taking the PC offline
Keep the existing stream available while you test the replacement. YouTube recommends testing failover and monitoring stream quality; its guidance also suggests checking that the player can roll over to a backup when the primary encoder stops or its Ethernet is disconnected.

- Start the cloud feed and check the preview in Live Control Room for the expected picture and audio.
- Open the public or unlisted watch page and verify playback there as well, including on a mobile device if that matters to your audience.
- Confirm that the cloud process keeps running after you disconnect from the session used to administer it. This is an operational check, not a vendor uptime guarantee.
- If you configured a backup input or encoder, test the failure path and confirm that YouTube’s player moves to the backup as intended.
- Watch the stream for a meaningful interval before switching off the PC. Check for audio drift, black frames, unexpected pauses, or a failed loop, and review any local archive process you rely on.
For the contribution link from the encoder to YouTube, YouTube recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. If both primary and backup feeds use that connection, account for both plus 20%. This is a bandwidth-planning recommendation, not a target bitrate for every resolution or encoder.
Plan for continuity, archives, and costs
Keep the whole chain running
“The encoder is online” does not necessarily mean the source, recovery path, and viewer playback are all healthy. Plan separately for source availability, process supervision, credentials, network access, backup inputs or pipelines, and any storage needed for recordings.

AWS describes MediaLive standard channels as using two processing pipelines in different Availability Zones, while single-pipeline channels use one. The more resilient arrangement has different cost implications. Choose redundancy based on the consequences of an interruption rather than assuming a cloud service removes every failure point.
Do not assume a complete 24-hour YouTube archive
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what happens to a 24/7 broadcast as a complete VOD. If retaining the full program matters, confirm YouTube’s current behavior and plan a separate recording and storage path.

Estimate cloud costs across the entire workflow
Count always-on compute or media-processing runtime, inputs and outputs, packaging or origin, viewer data transfer and CDN delivery, redundancy, and storage. For example, AWS says MediaLive channels incur charges while running even when inputs receive no content and outputs produce none.
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS planning page gives an assumption-dependent example of about $3,838.69 for roughly 100 viewers across 200 monthly hours of 1080p events: $904.69 for encoding and packaging and $2,934.00 for distribution. The same page gives one-hour examples of $69.74 for a 540p event with 1,000 viewers and $1,505.60 for a 1080p event with 10,000 viewers. These are AWS examples under its stated assumptions, not quotes for your channel; region, architecture, usage, and current pricing affect an estimate. Recalculate against the provider’s current pricing before committing.

Move over in a controlled cutover
- Document the current PC setup, including source files or inputs, output settings, YouTube destination, backup behavior, and recording needs.
- Select the cloud model that matches the source and production workflow rather than choosing by the word “cloud” alone.
- Configure the cloud side with the required source, encoder or processing pipeline, and the exact YouTube URL and key.
- Run a controlled test while the existing PC setup is still available. Check preview, watch-page playback, audio/video quality, and any backup path.
- Cut over only after verification, then monitor the new stream and confirm any separate recording or archive process is working.
- Retire the PC workflow only when no longer needed, and revoke or rotate credentials that are no longer in use.
