You can use an Unraid server to run a software encoder that sends a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live event, repeating the file if your encoder supports looping. The core setup is to mount the video and persistent configuration into a Docker container or VM, enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder, then confirm the preview in YouTube Studio before starting the event. Unraid hosts the encoder; YouTube still receives the live feed through its ingest service.

What this setup does—and what it does not

This guide is for sending a video file through an encoder as a live feed to YouTube. It is not the same as uploading a video to YouTube or scheduling a Premiere. Unraid can keep the encoder process running on your server, but a continuous loop alone does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery: network failures, an encoder crash, a full storage pool, or a YouTube-side interruption can still stop the stream.

The recommended software approach is an encoder in a Docker container or virtual machine (VM). The media file must be visible inside that environment, and the encoder’s settings should be stored outside the container image so they persist if you recreate it. The exact image, loop control, configuration path, and commands vary by encoder; follow the selected project’s current documentation rather than assuming one community template works for every setup.

Check YouTube eligibility and prepare the event

YouTube Help’s current guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Initial live-streaming enablement can take time, so check access before the planned event. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

  • Choose the event’s title, description, privacy setting, and scheduled status in YouTube Studio.
  • Use an event and media file for which you have the necessary rights. Replaying a recording does not bypass copyright rules; unauthorized music or video can trigger claims, restrictions, or removal. Review YouTube’s policies for the content and rights situation that applies to your channel.
  • Keep the original file. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not count on a complete YouTube archive for a 24-hour or longer event. If a full recording matters, use a separate local recording workflow and monitor its storage.

Set up an encoder on Unraid

  1. Confirm the media is available. Put the video in a user share and confirm the share is accessible from the Unraid server. Unraid explains shares at its shares documentation.
  2. Add a maintained encoder container or VM. For Docker, use the selected encoder’s documented Unraid template or setup instructions. Map the host folder holding the video to a container media path. If the encoder only reads the file, make that mapping read-only where the template permits.
  3. Persist configuration. Map a host folder under appdata to the encoder’s documented configuration path. Unraid notes that keeping variable settings outside the Docker image allows state to survive image recreation. Its container documentation covers templates, path mappings, and recovery at Managing and customizing containers.
  4. Use the right path inside the encoder. Unraid’s host path and the container’s path are different. In the encoder, browse to or enter the container-side path you mapped, not the host-side path.
  5. Leave networking conservative. Unraid documents bridge as the common default; it exposes only ports explicitly mapped in the template. A sender that only makes outbound connections generally needs no inbound port forwarding. Keep the Unraid management interface and any encoder web UI off the public internet unless there is a specific, secured need to expose one.
  6. Configure playback. Select the mounted file and enable repeat/loop if you want it to replay. Loop labels and behavior are encoder-specific, so verify them in the current documentation for your chosen image. Test that playback returns to the beginning as expected.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding encoder fields. Follow YouTube’s stream settings guidance for the current interface and key handling.
  3. Treat the key as a secret. YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Do not post it in a screenshot, public configuration, or support message. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check both picture and sound, then start the event there if it is scheduled or otherwise requires a separate start action. Confirm the public event is behaving as intended.

Choose settings and network capacity

Use the settings supported by both your encoder and the YouTube event. YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution and frame rate; a number that suits a different resolution or frame rate may not suit your stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS when supported, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Make sure available upload capacity exceeds the stream’s total outgoing bitrate. YouTube’s current guidance recommends 20% upload headroom.
  • Use a reliable network connection and watch the Live Control Room preview while testing. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring audio and video quality.
  • A server that remains powered on does not guarantee that the network, encoder, or YouTube ingest will remain available. Arrange a way to notice a failed process, dropped connection, low storage, or platform interruption.

Keep the stream manageable over time

Before relying on an unattended stream, run a full-path test from the mounted file through the encoder to the Live Control Room. Confirm the loop, stream key, audio, video, event start, and monitoring method. Track free space if you also record locally, and retain the source file if you need a complete archive. A 24/7 event is longer than YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive behavior, so plan recording and recovery separately.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The encoder cannot find the video: Check that the host share is mounted in the container and select the mapped container-side path. Verify spelling, case, and read permissions.
  • Settings disappear after recreating the container: Confirm the encoder’s documented configuration directory is mapped to persistent host storage such as an appdata folder, rather than existing only inside the image.
  • YouTube shows no preview: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct event’s stream URL and key are entered, and outbound connectivity is available. Check the encoder’s own status and the Live Control Room before starting the event.
  • YouTube reports an unstable or poor-quality feed: Check the current YouTube bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate, use CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, and verify that upload capacity includes the recommended headroom.
  • The stream stops during a long run: Determine whether the encoder exited, the connection dropped, the server lost power, storage filled, or YouTube interrupted ingest. A looping file only governs playback; it does not itself restart a failed process or restore a connection.
  • The key might be exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room and replace the stored key in the encoder configuration.
  • The full event recording is missing: YouTube Help’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Keep the source and configure a separate recording workflow if you need a complete longer copy.

Unraid software or a dedicated encoder?

Unraid software makes sense if you already run the server and want to reuse it. A dedicated hardware encoder is an alternative if you specifically want an appliance workflow independent of the Unraid host. YouTube’s encoder setup page names the AJA HELO Plus and its PlayToStream prerecorded-media feature; it is optional, not a requirement for the software method. The available guidance does not establish a controlled cost, reliability, or performance comparison between it and an Unraid-hosted encoder.
