You can broadcast a prerecorded gameplay video as a YouTube Live stream by using a Raspberry Pi to play the file and send it to YouTube through an encoder. First enable YouTube Live, then check whether your Pi and the file can sustain your chosen output settings. There is no verified one-size-fits-all Raspberry Pi model or FFmpeg command for this job, so test the exact file and setup before relying on it.

How the Raspberry Pi-to-YouTube workflow works

The Pi acts as the playback and, if needed, encoding host. It sends the prerecorded video and audio to YouTube Live, where viewers see it as a live broadcast:

  1. Gameplay VOD stored on the Pi or accessible to it.
  2. A compatible playback and encoder workflow on the Pi.
  3. YouTube Live ingest, configured with a server address and stream key.
  4. A live broadcast on your channel.

YouTube documents encoder-based gameplay broadcasts and its accepted ingest settings. Raspberry Pi documentation describes video streaming support in camera workflows, but it does not establish a universal recipe or performance benchmark for relaying arbitrary gameplay files.

Enable YouTube Live and create the stream

If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio in advance. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. In Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Enter those in the encoder; some tools ask for the stream name or key separately, while others combine it with the ingest address. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it in a script, screenshot, shell history, or support post. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the connection details.

Check the VOD and choose a realistic output

Before configuring the stream, identify the file’s video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, duration, and whether it contains an audio track. Then determine whether your encoder can pass the existing streams through in a format YouTube accepts, or whether the Pi must decode and re-encode them. A file’s extension alone does not establish compatibility. Direct pass-through depends on the file’s streams and the chosen ingest profile; the official guidance does not provide a Pi-specific command for deciding this automatically.

Do not assume that every Raspberry Pi has the same acceleration available to every FFmpeg workload. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation covers camera encoding: it describes hardware H.264 encoding where available and an FFmpeg/libav backend that can encode audio and video and stream output over a network. Those camera capabilities do not prove that a particular Pi can smoothly transcode your gameplay VOD.

The same Raspberry Pi documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Its --low-latency option trades coding efficiency for reduced latency and can affect maximum frame rate; the documentation’s 1080p30 result applies to the described camera-encoding context, not a universal gameplay-file relay. Playback decoding, audio handling, file format, resolution, frame rate, cooling, and software build all affect the actual workload. See Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation.

YouTube Live encoder settings to check

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant-bitrate encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder offers it because it encrypts the connection. YouTube’s encoder settings page is the authority for current ingest requirements.

YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are ingest targets, not guarantees that the Pi or your internet connection can sustain them. These figures are from YouTube’s current encoder settings table:

H.264 output Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 6 Mbps

For 1080p30 AV1 or H.265, YouTube lists 10 Mbps recommended and 4 Mbps minimum. Select a profile only after testing the particular file and Pi. A conservative starting point might be 720p30 or 1080p30 if the Pi can maintain it; measure upload speed and leave enough headroom for a stable connection rather than treating a minimum as a safe target.

Set up and test the broadcast

  1. Prepare the channel: enable YouTube Live ahead of time if needed, then create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Keep the stream key private.
  2. Inspect the file: note its audio and video streams, resolution, frame rate, and duration. Decide whether the encoder can pass them through or must transcode; verify this with the actual tool and file.
  3. Choose output settings: use a supported codec and audio format, constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval, and a resolution and frame rate the Pi has demonstrated it can sustain. Match the bitrate to YouTube’s table and your tested upload capacity.
  4. Configure the encoder: enter YouTube’s ingest server address and stream key, choosing RTMPS if available. Exact settings depend on the encoder and installed software build.
  5. Run a representative test: include gameplay with motion and the intended audio. Watch for dropped frames or system overload on the Pi, and check YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if either the system or connection struggles. YouTube explicitly recommends testing before the event.
  6. End and verify: stop sending from the encoder to end the broadcast. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; after processing, check the channel’s Live tab.

Pass-through, transcoding, or a fuller production setup?

Pass through compatible streams

If the VOD’s existing streams meet the target ingest profile and your encoder supports passing them through, avoiding re-encoding can reduce processing demand. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming the file can simply be copied to the output.

Transcode when the file needs conversion

Transcoding may be needed when the source codec, resolution, frame rate, or audio does not fit the chosen output. It adds work for the Pi, so validate the whole playback-and-encoding workload under realistic conditions before streaming publicly.

Use a fuller workflow only when needed

A command-line relay may be suitable for a straightforward prerecorded broadcast. Overlays or live scene changes call for a fuller production workflow, but the reviewed OBS documentation does not establish Raspberry Pi support for this particular VOD relay. OBS also notes that meeting basic system requirements does not ensure that a chosen encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity will perform well. See OBS system requirements.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • You cannot start a live stream: if this is the channel’s first broadcast, confirm live streaming is enabled and allow for YouTube’s stated activation window of up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: recheck the server address and stream key, and verify that the encoder is using a supported protocol. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • Stream health reports instability: compare the configured bitrate with a measured, reliable upload rate. Reduce the output bitrate or profile if the connection cannot sustain it, then test again.
  • The Pi drops frames or appears overloaded: the selected workload may exceed what that model, software build, and cooling setup can handle. Try a lower resolution or frame rate, or avoid transcoding if compatible pass-through is available.
  • Video works but audio is missing or unsuitable: confirm that the file has an audio stream and that the encoder is outputting AAC or MP3 in a supported configuration.
  • The archived stream is not immediately visible: YouTube says the archive appears in the channel’s Live tab after processing. Check there after processing completes.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

A prerecorded gameplay VOD is still subject to YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules. Use gameplay, music, commentary, and other material you have rights to broadcast; having a local copy does not itself grant streaming rights. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before scheduling, especially if the VOD includes licensed music or third-party footage. Do not assume that technical acceptance by the ingest server means the content complies with platform rules.

Or let it run in the cloud
