You can run OBS on a rented Windows VPS and send a continuous stream to YouTube by creating a broadcast in YouTube Studio, connecting OBS with the broadcast’s server URL and stream key, and keeping the VPS—and OBS—running. The setup is straightforward; making it reliable is the harder part. The VPS must sustain your chosen encoding workload and outbound bitrate, and you must test how it behaves after disconnections and restarts.
Before you start: what “24/7” means
A VPS moves the encoder from your home computer to a rented Windows host. OBS still has to run, encode or pass through the video, and maintain an outbound connection to YouTube. Renting a VPS does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming: capacity, network service, Windows restarts, OBS failures, and YouTube’s stream health all matter.
Also distinguish continuous programming from one indefinitely archived video. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise automatic archiving for a stream that runs longer. Check that the VPS can handle OBS
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic Windows requirements. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that a particular scene, resolution, frame rate, and encoder will run smoothly. Treat them as a baseline, not a VPS sizing recommendation. Before choosing a plan, check the provider’s current specifications and terms for the actual machine you will receive. The important questions are sustained encoding performance at your target settings, available outbound bandwidth and transfer limits, remote access, reboot controls, and how you can recover the stream after a failure. There is no universal VPS size or bandwidth guarantee for this workload.
Software or hardware encoding?
OBS can use software encoding or compatible hardware encoders, including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync. A generic virtual machine may not expose a supported GPU, encoder, or driver, so do not assume hardware encoding is available just because the provider advertises a virtual server. Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Confirm live streaming is available for your channel. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing broadcast. YouTube notes that previous stream settings may load again when you create a later stream.
- Install and open OBS on the Windows VPS. Connect to the rented host using the provider’s remote-access method. Confirm OBS opens and can access the encoder and media or scene you intend to stream.
- Get the connection details from the Live Control Room. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder. In OBS, choose YouTube if that option is available, or enter the server URL and key in the stream configuration. Treat the key like sensitive account access information: do not publish it, share it, or include it in screenshots or logs you distribute.
- Configure video and audio. Choose a codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings that match the source and the VPS’s sustained capacity. Use YouTube’s current settings table for the target resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.
- Start the encoder and confirm the broadcast. Select Start Streaming in OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and use its Go live action when ready, following YouTube’s encoder workflow.

Choose settings using YouTube’s guidance
YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current guidance lists up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. The recommended bitrate varies by format: for H.264, for example, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps as 5–14 Mbps and 1080p at 60 fps as 6–17 Mbps. Those figures are not universal settings; consult the live table for the codec and output you choose. YouTube encoder settings

- Match the source and output. Do not choose a resolution or frame rate higher than the source or the VPS can sustain. A static playlist may have a different encoding workload from fast-moving footage or a complex OBS scene.
- Allow for network headroom. The VPS needs sustained outbound capacity for the stream, not merely a brief speed-test result. Check the provider’s bandwidth and transfer terms and leave room for normal variation.
- Test audio as well as video. Confirm the selected audio format and listen to the YouTube preview. A picture that looks correct does not prove that audio is present or synchronized.
- Use the current table at setup time. YouTube can revise its guidance, and the correct bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Avoid copying a single value into every OBS profile.
Test the stream and verify recovery
Before treating the VPS as a 24/7 setup, run a representative test at the settings you plan to use. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages, and watch OBS for dropped frames, encoding overload, or other warnings. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health. Then test the failure cases that matter to you: close OBS, disconnect the remote session, restart Windows, reboot the VPS, and interrupt its network connection where practical. Confirm what happens to the YouTube broadcast and whether OBS returns to streaming afterward. The recovery behavior depends on the VPS provider and your configuration; no single automatic-restart procedure is established for every rented Windows VPS. Do not assume an update, reboot, or network interruption will be handled without intervention.

Troubleshooting common problems

Estimate the ongoing cost
A rented VPS cost is only one part of the total. Include the Windows plan, any separately charged bandwidth or storage, and the time needed to monitor and recover OBS. Compare plans against sustained encoding performance and the complete stream’s transfer requirements, not just CPU or memory labels. Provider prices, GPU access, bandwidth caps, and uptime terms vary, and no particular provider or plan is established here.
