For a 1080p60 gaming rerun sent to YouTube as a live broadcast, use 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube live-ingest recommendations, not the bitrate recommendation for uploading a finished video.

Recommended YouTube settings for a 1080p60 rerun

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, checked on October 3, 2026, gives different 1080p60 bitrate recommendations by codec. Use the recommended rate when your encoder and stable upload connection can sustain it. The minimums are listed values, not quality targets.

Setting Recommendation Notes
H.264 video bitrate 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps listed minimum For 1080p60 live ingest.
AV1 or H.265/HEVC video bitrate 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps listed minimum YouTube lists AV1 and H.265 in the same bitrate column.
Rate control CBR Use constant bitrate encoding.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds Recommended interval; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Match the output to the intended 1080p60 stream.
Audio AAC or MP3; 128 Kbps stereo YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 44.1 kHz stereo.
SDR color Rec. 709 YouTube’s recommended SDR color setting.

Why a rerun uses live-stream settings

YouTube’s official encoder guidance does not define a separate “gaming rerun” profile. If you send previously recorded gameplay through an encoder as a YouTube Live broadcast, configure the outgoing signal using the live-ingest recommendations above. That is an operational interpretation of YouTube’s separate live and upload guidance; the official pages do not describe a dedicated prerecorded-rerun workflow.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

The distinction is the delivery path: a live encoder sends a real-time feed to YouTube, while a finished VOD is submitted as a normal video upload. For an SDR upload at 1080p high frame rate, YouTube separately recommends 12 Mbps. Do not use that upload figure as a substitute for the live-ingest recommendation: H.264 live ingest is listed at 17 Mbps, and AV1/H.265 at 12 Mbps.

Set up and test the live encoder

  1. Choose a supported codec. Select H.264, AV1, or H.265/HEVC if your encoder supports it. Apply the matching bitrate recommendation from the table rather than assuming the same rate applies to every codec.
  2. Set the output format. Configure 1920 × 1080 at 60 fps, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Keep the keyframe interval at or below four seconds.
  3. Configure transport and audio. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted transport. For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced guidance lists AAC or MP3 at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz.
  4. Connect the encoder to YouTube Live. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream key for the broadcast. YouTube lets you reuse settings from a prior stream, including metadata, settings, and the stream key, and gives you a chance to change settings for the new stream. Keep the key private.
  5. Run a representative test. Check audio and gameplay movement, confirm the encoder output and YouTube stream health, and verify the available upload capacity under sustained streaming conditions. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not eliminate the need for a stable upload from your encoder: treat the recommended bitrate as a sustained target, not a momentary peak printed by a speed test.

Plan the replay and archive separately

YouTube may automatically archive a live stream that is under 12 hours. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a long rerun should not rely on one continuous YouTube archive if the complete replay matters. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup.

  • Estimate local storage needs from the recording’s bitrate and duration; no particular drive capacity or brand is specified by YouTube.
  • YouTube’s DVR feature lets viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. DVR controls viewing; they do not change encoder bitrate or create a special rerun profile.

Troubleshoot common setting problems

Symptom Likely issue What to check
Stream health warnings or interruptions The connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, or upload capacity varies. Test sustained upload performance, reduce the output bitrate if necessary, and monitor stream health during a representative test.
Unexpected quality or encoder rejection The selected bitrate may not match the codec, or the output settings may differ from 1080p60. Confirm codec, resolution, frame rate, and the corresponding live-ingest figure in the table.
Keyframe-related warning The interval may exceed YouTube’s recommendation. Set two seconds and ensure it does not exceed four seconds.
Missing or incomplete YouTube replay The broadcast exceeded 12 hours or was not fully captured. Keep a local recording and avoid depending on a single continuous stream longer than YouTube’s stated archive threshold.
Viewers report audio issues Audio format, sample rate, or stereo bitrate may differ from the guidance. Check AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 Kbps stereo; include audio in the pre-stream test.

Copyright and monetization considerations

A rerun is still a YouTube broadcast of the material in the recording. Confirm that you have rights to the gameplay footage, music, overlays, and any other included material before rebroadcasting. Reusing a recording does not by itself establish that it meets YouTube’s monetization policies; eligibility depends on the applicable YouTube rules and the content. Check YouTube’s current policies before relying on monetization.
