YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 Indian music channel, schedule consecutive broadcasts that end with a margin before that limit, verify each replay in YouTube Studio, and keep a separate local recording as backup.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 stream?
It may not save the complete replay if the broadcast runs continuously for 24 hours. YouTube’s Archive live streams guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Exactly 12 hours is not within the stated “less than 12 hours” guidance, so do not schedule sessions to run right up to that boundary.
The practical solution is to divide the day into shorter broadcast sessions. YouTube does not prescribe a particular session length or guarantee that every eligible stream will archive, so leave a margin below 12 hours and check each finished broadcast. Treat the margin as prudent operating practice, not an official YouTube requirement.
Set up automatic archiving with a local backup
1. Split the daily schedule into sessions
Plan consecutive sessions to cover your channel’s 24-hour schedule, with each one ending comfortably before 12 hours. Start the next broadcast as needed. Avoid relying on a single 24-hour broadcast—or on a session scheduled for exactly 12 hours—to create the day’s replay.

2. Confirm each YouTube replay
After a session ends, check YouTube Studio to confirm its replay is present and usable before treating YouTube as your only copy. If a replay is missing or incomplete, the separate local recording is your recovery copy.
3. Record locally at the same time
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as backup. Configure a separate recording process and check that it is actually writing files with usable audio and video; a live broadcast being active does not, by itself, confirm that a local file is being saved. YouTube’s guidance does not specify a particular application or unattended-recording setup.

Estimate storage from your chosen recording settings, bitrate, and how long you intend to retain files. An external hard drive is one possible local storage category, but the right capacity depends on those factors. Keep the local copy separate from the YouTube-hosted replay: the local file remains your copy if a platform archive is unavailable, while it also creates responsibility for storage and retention.
Check recording and DVR controls when using the API
If your broadcast is automated through the YouTube Live Streaming API, review its recording/archive, DVR, auto-start, and auto-stop settings before going live. The API documents recordFromStart, enableArchive, and DVR controls; it says recordFromStart starts recording after the broadcast becomes live and defaults to true. Some settings have state-dependent update restrictions, so do not assume you can change every control after the broadcast is live.

These API controls do not override YouTube’s warning about streams longer than 12 hours. DVR is for viewer playback control—pause, rewind, and fast-forward—not a durable local backup. Its behavior and limits can vary with latency and device; the OBS Studio guide to streaming to YouTube discusses those DVR considerations.
Protect the music rights for the live stream and replay
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. A stream can be interrupted or terminated if copyrighted content is detected. Licensed music may still require the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID, and an archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast ends. - Confirm that your permissions cover both the live broadcast and the replay or archive, including the relevant territories.
- If a rights holder uses Content ID, coordinate with them about allowlisting your channel before you stream.
- Do not treat a successful live broadcast as proof that the archived replay is cleared: claims can arrive after it ends.
YouTube’s platform guidance describes its detection and enforcement process; it does not determine whether your particular use complies with Indian copyright law or replace the terms of your license.
