Generate product-page thumbnails as small, consistent display derivatives from accurate master images—not as replacements for the larger product images used on product pages or in shopping feeds. Choose a deliberate crop, create sizes that match your storefront’s actual cards, and serve responsive files so mobile devices do not download unnecessarily large images. If you submit images to Google Merchant Center, use a compliant full-size image rather than a thumbnail.
Start with an accurate master image
Use a clear image of the exact product and selected variant. Keep a high-quality original master, then create thumbnail derivatives from it. Repeatedly resizing or recropping a small thumbnail can reduce detail and limit your options when the storefront design changes.
For Merchant Center, the image URL must be crawlable and the image must accurately show the product. Google explicitly says not to submit a thumbnail as the main image. See Google’s image link guidelines and product data specification.
Choose a consistent crop without losing product identity
Pick a card aspect ratio—square is common, but your theme may use another—and apply it consistently across the catalog. Position the product so distinctive details remain visible at the thumbnail’s actual display size. Do not crop away features that distinguish one product or variant from another.

Keep variant images accurate and distinct. If a customer selects a color or other option, its product card or gallery image should correspond to that selection. Google’s guidance calls for images that match the selected variant.
What size should product thumbnails be?
Set output dimensions from the size at which cards actually render, rather than treating one pixel dimension as mandatory for every store. Shopify’s 2026 image-size guidance suggests square product thumbnails of 150–300 px. That is a suggestion, not a universal requirement. Check the rendered dimensions in your theme and account for high-density screens, which may need a larger source to look sharp.

Keep thumbnail sizing separate from feed-image requirements. Google Merchant Center currently specifies a minimum of 500 × 500 px for images and recommends around 1500 × 1500 px or above for best performance across listing formats. Google says the 500 × 500 minimum will apply to all products beginning January 31, 2027. Do not upscale a small image to meet the minimum; start with a sufficiently large original. These figures and requirements are from Google’s image link guidelines and product data specification.
Generate and deliver responsive derivatives
Create image widths that correspond to real storefront uses, such as catalog cards and larger product-page views. Use your platform’s image transformation or theme facilities where available, and have the browser select an appropriate candidate instead of sending every visitor the largest file. Shopify’s theme guidance specifically identifies the sizes attribute as an effective lever for responsive product-grid performance: Build responsive layouts that perform well on mobile.

As a simplified HTML illustration, a responsive image can offer multiple widths and describe its expected layout width:
<img
src="/images/item-300.webp"
srcset="/images/item-150.webp 150w,
/images/item-300.webp 300w,
/images/item-600.webp 600w"
sizes="(max-width: 600px) 50vw, 25vw"
alt="Blue ceramic mug"
width="300"
height="300">Replace the example paths, widths, and sizes expression with files and layout dimensions that match your own theme. The alt text should describe the image meaningfully; the width and height help reserve layout space. If your commerce platform generates responsive markup automatically, verify what it emits rather than adding a second, conflicting image-selection mechanism.

Choose a format and compression for the destination
Shopify supports multiple product-image formats, and its imagery service selects formats supported by a customer’s web client. Google accepts JPEG, WebP, PNG, non-animated GIF, BMP, and TIFF for Merchant Center’s image link. Choose a format supported by the destination and check the rendered result for visual clarity and file weight; the cited guidance does not establish one universal compression setting or byte target. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep Merchant Center images compliant
- Use an image that accurately represents the product and selected variant, and make its URL crawlable.
- Use the required full-size feed asset, not an on-site thumbnail; do not upscale a smaller source image to meet the size requirement.
- Keep the product unobstructed. Do not add promotional text, watermarks, or borders.
- If the product image was created with generative AI, preserve embedded IPTC Digital Source Type metadata indicating its AI origin. Check any additional labeling obligations that apply in your market.
For the precise current requirements, consult Google’s image link guidelines and product data specification.

Inspect the thumbnails in the real catalog
Review outputs at actual card size on desktop and mobile, not just enlarged in an image editor. Include a very small item, a long or irregular product, and products with multiple variants. Check sharpness, crop, color accuracy, image loading, and what users see if an image fails to load. This is a practical review checklist; the cited platform guidance does not prescribe a single test protocol.
Creating the source photos when you do not have suitable images
A thumbnail workflow cannot repair a source image that misrepresents the product or lacks the detail needed for the intended display. Check whether a supplier already provides accurate imagery before photographing products yourself. Shopify notes that a smartphone may be sufficient and a tripod can help in some situations; its product photography guidance covers taking product photographs.
For small products, a light tent or lightbox can help control lighting, and a tripod can help keep framing repeatable. These are optional photography aids, not thumbnail generators or requirements. Amazon’s seller guidance discusses photography equipment and composition, including the suggestion to have the product fill 85% or more of the frame; that is advice for source-photo composition, not a thumbnail size rule. See How to take product photos in 2025.
