For repeatable captures at multiple sizes, use Playwright device emulation and its screenshot tools. Desktop emulation is not the same as testing on a phone, so verify on actual hardware when device-specific behavior matters.
Capture a product page with Chrome DevTools
- Open the product page in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Enable the Device Toolbar in DevTools.
- Choose Responsive and enter the viewport width and height, or select a device preset. A preset also configures other emulation properties; custom responsive dimensions let you set the viewport directly. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation for the current controls.
- Set the orientation by choosing appropriate width and height values or using the preset controls.
- Open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu and select Capture screenshot for the visible viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page, including content outside the visible screen.
Use a viewport capture when the question is how the product page appears on one screen. Use a full-page capture when you need to inspect the complete page, such as its description, reviews, and lower-page details. These are different capture scopes, so note which one you used.
Choose and record the mobile viewport
There is no single universally correct set of mobile viewport sizes for every product page. Choose dimensions that reflect the devices or responsive breakpoints relevant to your project. For useful comparisons, keep the conditions consistent and record:
- Viewport width and height.
- Portrait or landscape orientation.
- The device preset or custom responsive dimensions.
- Whether the capture shows the viewport, a selected element, or the full page.
- For scripted runs, the browser and emulation settings.
Product pages can also vary with consent choices, personalization, availability, or image loading. The cited Chrome and Playwright guidance describes general emulation and screenshot capabilities; it does not prescribe a product-page-specific setup for these states. Decide which page state matters to your comparison and document it alongside the dimensions.

Automate repeatable captures with Playwright
Playwright can emulate device settings such as user agent, screen size, viewport, and touch. Its device settings can be overridden, including viewport dimensions. Screenshot tooling can capture the visible viewport, a selected element, or the full scrollable page. Consult the Playwright emulation guide and screenshot documentation for the current API.
For a repeatable set, define the intended viewport and emulation settings in your script, load the target page, and choose the capture scope that matches your comparison. Keep the same settings for every product page in the set. If you are comparing breakpoints, run a separate capture at each chosen width rather than treating one device preset as a universal mobile representation.

Know what desktop emulation can and cannot tell you
Chrome cautions that Device Mode does not run your code on a mobile device; it simulates the mobile experience from a desktop. Emulation is useful for checking responsive layout and producing consistent screenshots, but it may not reproduce hardware- or mobile-browser-specific behavior. Chrome identifies mobile CPU architecture as one example of an emulation limitation. When that distinction could affect the page, check it on an actual device. See Chrome’s Device Mode documentation.

Troubleshooting captures
- The screenshot has the wrong dimensions: Confirm the Device Toolbar is enabled and check the displayed responsive width and height before capturing. A preset may set additional emulation properties, while custom responsive dimensions control the viewport directly.
- The image omits content lower on the page: You likely captured the visible viewport. Use More options > Capture a full size screenshot for the full page.
- The result differs from a phone: Desktop Device Mode is an emulation, not a physical mobile device. Test on the relevant hardware if browser or device behavior could explain the difference.
- Repeated screenshots are difficult to compare: Keep the viewport, orientation, preset or custom dimensions, capture scope, and scripted browser/emulation settings consistent and record them with the images.
