Oregon State University researchers report that a new metal-organic framework, BVR-X, captured carbon dioxide from a highly humid gas stream containing 4% CO2 and could be regenerated for dozens of capture-and-release cycles. The material’s pore structure is designed to direct water and CO2 to different regions, addressing a problem that can undermine carbon capture. These are research-stage results, not evidence of full-scale industrial deployment.
How BVR-X is designed to capture carbon dioxide in humid gas
Metal-organic frameworks, or MOFs, are crystalline materials assembled from metal ions and organic molecules called linkers. Their nanoscale pores can adsorb gases. In BVR-X, the reported design organizes the pores so water and carbon dioxide favor different regions. The aim is to reduce the chance that water occupies the locations used to capture CO2.
That matters because water in industrial flue gas can compete with CO2 for adsorption sites and reduce sorbent performance. Drying the gas before capture adds cost, according to Oregon State University’s announcement. The researchers’ approach is to make the material function despite moisture rather than assume the incoming gas is dry.
What the reported test shows—and what it does not
Oregon State says BVR-X captured CO2 from a highly humid stream containing 4% CO2, a condition the university describes as relevant to emissions from natural-gas combustion. It also reports that the material was regenerated and reused over dozens of capture-and-release cycles.

The announcement does not state the exact humidity, adsorption capacity, selectivity, regeneration energy, or detailed long-duration performance. It provides no side-by-side results against other sorbents. The 4% figure describes the CO2 concentration in the tested stream; it is not a capture-efficiency figure. Without the missing measurements, the announcement alone does not establish how BVR-X compares quantitatively with existing materials or what operating costs a system using it might have.
Is BVR-X ready for industrial use?
Not on the evidence reported in the university announcement. The work describes a research material and a humid-stream test, not a full-scale flue-stack installation or commercial operation. Oregon State says a patent application has been filed; that does not mean a patent has been granted, a license or commercial partner exists, or the material is available to buy.

The announcement attributes 30% of total U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions to industry and credits the figure to the Environmental Protection Agency, without specifying a year. That is context for the potential importance of industrial emissions, not evidence that BVR-X has reduced them.

The work is identified as Ankit K. Yadav et al., “Pore Compartmentalization of CO2 and H2O in a Redox-Active Adsorbent,” published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition in 2026 (DOI: 10.1002/anie.9809119). The university’s announcement is useful for the headline finding, but the detailed experimental methods and numerical results are needed for a rigorous assessment.

For a practical comparison with other capture materials, readers would need results on:
- CO2 capacity and selectivity under specified gas compositions and humidity;
- energy required to release the captured CO2 and regenerate the sorbent;
- performance over longer operating periods and repeated cycles; and
- tests at conditions representative of actual emissions, followed by pilot-scale operation.
Until those results and scale-up evidence are available, BVR-X is best understood as a promising research approach to moisture-tolerant carbon capture, rather than a proven industrial solution.
