Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() after opening the product page and waiting for the content you need. Choose a viewport capture for what is currently visible, fullPage: true for the document, clip for a defined rectangle, or an element screenshot for a specific product component. The example below uses Puppeteer 25.12.0 API patterns; check the matching documentation if your installed version differs. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide

Capture a product page with Puppeteer

Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project, then save a script such as capture-product.mjs. Replace the example URL and the illustrative [data-product-title] selector with values that match the page you are capturing.

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 1000, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com/product', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
  // Replace this illustrative selector with a stable selector on the target page.
  await page.waitForSelector('[data-product-title]');
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'product.png' });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Run it with node capture-product.mjs. The script sets the viewport before navigating, waits for navigation and a page-specific product element, writes a PNG, and closes the browser even if capture fails. Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates networkidle2, but that event alone does not guarantee that every shop has finished rendering its product content. Screenshot guide

Capture How Use it for
Visible viewport Call page.screenshot() without fullPage or clip. A screen-sized view, such as the top of a product detail page.
Full page Call page.screenshot({ path: 'product-full.png', fullPage: true }). A long page that must extend beyond the current viewport.
Rectangle Pass a clip rectangle with x, y, width and height. A known region of the rendered page. With a clip, captureBeyondViewport defaults to true; without a clip it defaults to false.
Single element Find the element and call element.screenshot({ path: 'product-image.png' }). A product image, price panel or other specific component. Puppeteer scrolls the element into view; a detached element produces an error.

Full-page capture

Set fullPage: true when you want the screenshot to span the document rather than only the visible screen. For pages with lazy-loaded content, full-page capture alone does not establish that every below-the-fold image or section has loaded. Wait for the content your result needs before taking the screenshot.

Clip a known region

For a rectangular crop, pass coordinates and dimensions, for example await page.screenshot({ path: 'product-region.png', clip: { x: 120, y: 180, width: 900, height: 600 } });. The numbers are CSS-pixel coordinates relative to the page; choose them for the target layout. A fixed rectangle can miss or include the wrong content if a responsive layout, banner, or page state changes.

Capture one element

Use a selector that identifies the product component, then capture its element handle:

const productImage = await page.waitForSelector('[data-product-image]');
if (!productImage) throw new Error('Product image element was not found');
await productImage.screenshot({ path: 'product-image.png' });

Change [data-product-image] to a selector that exists on the page. Waiting for the selector avoids attempting capture before the element appears; if the page replaces or removes the element before the screenshot call, Puppeteer can report that the handle is detached.

Set viewport dimensions for consistent results

Set the viewport before navigating when the intended screenshot depends on desktop or phone-responsive layout. Puppeteer’s Page API cautions that sites may respond unexpectedly to phone dimensions, and changes to settings such as isMobile or hasTouch may trigger a reload. Page.setViewport() · Page API

await page.setViewport({ width: 390, height: 844, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/product', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });

Those dimensions are an example, not a required phone standard. For visual comparisons, keep width, height, and device scale consistent across runs. Capture desktop and mobile as separate configurations if you need both layouts. The selected product variant, consent state, geolocation, or personalization may also affect the rendered page; verify the target site’s behavior rather than assuming captures will be identical.

Choose the output format and handling

page.screenshot() returns image bytes by default, or a base64 string when requested. PNG is the documented default; screenshot options include a file path, image type, quality, transparency, full-page capture, and clipping. A path extension can determine the image format. The quality option does not apply to PNG. Page.screenshot() · ScreenshotOptions

PNG is a practical choice for crisp interface captures, but format choice should follow your file-size and downstream requirements; no format-specific quality or performance comparison is implied here.

Wait for meaningful product content

Navigation completion and content readiness are separate concerns. A shop may load product details asynchronously, so wait for a stable, page-specific signal—such as a product title or image—before capture. The guide’s networkidle2 example is a starting point, not a universal readiness guarantee. Choose a selector that corresponds to the content in the screenshot, and handle cases where the selector never appears.

Troubleshoot common capture failures

  • The screenshot is blank or missing product details: navigation may have completed before client-rendered content appeared. Wait for a meaningful product selector or another explicit readiness condition before capture.
  • waitForSelector times out: the selector may not exist on that page, may differ by variant, or the page may have failed to render. Inspect the actual page markup and use a stable selector; also check whether navigation reached the expected product URL.
  • Element screenshot reports a detached element: the page replaced or removed that DOM element after it was selected. Wait for the updated element and obtain a fresh handle immediately before taking the screenshot.
  • The capture has the wrong layout: configure the intended viewport before navigation, then check the page’s responsive behavior. A viewport change can affect rendering, and certain mobile emulation settings may reload the page.
  • A clip misses the intended area: its rectangle is tied to page coordinates and dimensions. Recheck the rendered layout and adjust the rectangle; for a moving or responsive component, capturing the element may be more appropriate.
  • The full-page result omits lazy content: full-page scope does not itself prove that lazy images or asynchronously inserted sections are ready. Wait for the specific material content you need before capture.
  • The expected file is absent: confirm the screenshot path is writable and that the script reached page.screenshot(). The finally block still closes the browser if an earlier step throws.

Or skip the browser setup

If you do not want to launch and manage a browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF. The example below saves a screenshot of a product page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/product -o product.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

When Puppeteer is the right fit

Puppeteer is a direct option when your application needs browser-controlled page setup and a locally handled screenshot. Select the capture API that matches the required area, set a deliberate viewport, and wait for the product content that matters. If you need a print document rather than an image, Puppeteer’s PDF method is a separate API from screenshot capture. Page.pdf()
