You can use Liquidsoap to play an authorized playlist continuously and send its output to YouTube Live. The playlist handles the music sequence; Liquidsoap’s output handles YouTube ingest. To make the stream dependable, you must also configure a compatible encoder, protect your stream key, test the feed, and keep the Liquidsoap host and network running.
What you need before you begin
- A collection of recordings you are allowed to broadcast, stored where the Liquidsoap process can read them.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to YouTube Live Control Room.
- A computer or server that can stay on, a reliable internet connection, and a Liquidsoap installation.
- An encoder configuration compatible with your installed Liquidsoap version and YouTube’s current ingest requirements.
Liquidsoap’s current development documentation describes playlist and live-source composition in its 2.5.x documentation, while the versioned YouTube RTMP output reference is for Liquidsoap 2.4.5. Check the documentation and encoder syntax for the version you actually install; the setup below explains the workflow, not a tested, copy-and-run production script. Prepare the playlist and confirm broadcast rights
Organize the audio files
Put the recordings in a playlist file or directory that Liquidsoap can access. Liquidsoap treats a playlist as a source: it can play that source continuously, and its source-composition tools can hand off between sources. Verify that the files are readable and play through in the order you expect before connecting YouTube.
Check rights for each recording
Do not assume a recording is free to rebroadcast because the material is Sikh kirtan, devotional, or traditional. Confirm permission for the particular recording and performance, the arrangement, and any third-party material included in it. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have all necessary worldwide rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party matches; a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel for licensed material, and YouTube may interrupt or terminate a stream when it identifies third-party content. Choose playlist-only programming or live interruptions
Playlist-only stream
For unattended programming, use the playlist as the default source. This is the simpler arrangement when the channel should play recordings without a presenter interrupting them.
Live source with playlist fallback
If a presenter needs to speak or perform live, Liquidsoap’s fallback composition can prioritize a live Harbor input and return to the playlist when that input is unavailable. Plan and test the handoff behavior: confirm which source takes priority, what viewers hear during transitions, and how the playlist resumes. Harbor and fallback behavior are described in the Harbor documentation and source composition documentation.

Configure Liquidsoap to send the stream to YouTube
- Get the current ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and copy the current stream URL and stream key. The Liquidsoap 2.4.5 reference documents
output.youtube.live.rtmp, including an encoder, source, secret stream key, and RTMP URL parameter. Its default URL isrtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2; use the URL shown in your Live Control Room rather than relying on a default. See Liquidsoap’s versioned output reference and YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. - Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, public repository, or support request. Store it using a protected method appropriate to your host and restrict access to the Liquidsoap process and trusted administrators.
- Set up the encoder for your installed build. Confirm the available encoder syntax in the documentation for your installed Liquidsoap version, then match it to YouTube’s current ingest guidance. YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. Check that your selected encoder and transport are supported by your Liquidsoap build before relying on them.
- Provide video if your ingest setup requires it. The cited Liquidsoap documentation covers audio playlists and video-capable output broadly, but it does not validate a complete audio-only setup for YouTube. If your channel’s ingest configuration requires video, determine how to supply a compatible visual track and test it with your installed encoder. Do not assume a particular static-image configuration works without verifying it.
- Connect the playlist source to the output. Configure the YouTube output to encode the intended Liquidsoap source, whether that is the playlist itself or the live-with-fallback composition. Validate the exact expression and options against the reference for your version; the documentation cited here does not establish one tested full script.
Use YouTube-compatible audio settings
For stereo audio, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 128 Kbps and a 44.1 KHz sample rate. These are YouTube-published recommendations, not results of a performance test. Ensure the encoder settings and source format are compatible, then check the Live Control Room preview and health status rather than assuming the configured values guarantee a stable stream. Test before making the stream public
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream, as appropriate for your channel and audience.
- Confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the preview has the expected visual track, if one is required.
- Listen for audible gaps, clipping, unexpected silence, or failed transitions between playlist items and any live input.
- Watch the Live Control Room stream-health indicator and address ingest or encoding warnings before relying on the stream.
- After the test, verify the playlist continues as intended and that your host, Liquidsoap process, source files, credentials, and network will remain available for the planned run.
YouTube advises creators to test, preview, and monitor their streams. A playlist supplies program material, but it cannot ensure host uptime, network reliability, music rights, or successful ingestion. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.

Keep the stream running and plan for interruptions
Liquidsoap can keep a source playing while its process runs, but continuous playback still depends on the machine or server, power, network connection, accessible files, credentials, and YouTube accepting the ingest. For an unattended setup, monitor the host and process and have a way to restore them if they stop. YouTube may also interrupt a live stream for identified third-party material, so continuous operation does not remove the need for rights clearance.
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection in transit. Use it when the installed Liquidsoap output and encoder configuration support it, and confirm the correct ingest URL in Live Control Room. If you use RTMP, remember that the stream key remains a secret credential; do not expose it in public configuration examples.

Recording and YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If preserving the program matters, arrange local recording and storage sized for the format and retention period, or plan segments and restarts rather than depending on a single long YouTube archive.
