Choose an AWS live-streaming solution by starting with the viewer experience and latency target: use Amazon IVS for managed, interactive experiences; use AWS Elemental MediaLive for broadcast-style live encoding. Add MediaPackage when you need packaging or origination, and CloudFront when you need to distribute the packaged stream to viewers. These services have complementary roles, not interchangeable ones.
Start with the experience you need to deliver
The first decision is whether viewers mainly need to watch a broadcast or participate in a responsive, interactive experience. That distinction usually determines which AWS architecture to investigate.
| Your main need | AWS direction | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive live video for gaming, live shopping, virtual events, or a product experience where viewer response matters | Amazon IVS | AWS positions IVS for these types of experiences and offers low-latency channels and real-time stages. |
| Broadcast contribution, a live event feed, or linear channel playout | AWS Elemental MediaLive | MediaLive is AWS’s live encoding service for broadcast workflows. |
| Multiple streaming formats, DRM, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD | AWS Elemental MediaPackage | MediaPackage handles packaging and origination; it is not a substitute for the encoder. |
| Global delivery of a packaged broadcast stream | Amazon CloudFront, commonly with MediaLive and MediaPackage | CloudFront can deliver content from a MediaPackage origin. |
For the broadcast path, think in terms of a processing chain: MediaLive encodes the incoming feed, MediaPackage prepares outputs for playback, and CloudFront distributes them. For a managed interactive experience, evaluate IVS as the experience platform rather than trying to assemble that broadcast chain by default.
Choose IVS or the broadcast chain based on latency
AWS documentation describes IVS low-latency channels as capable of latency under five seconds and IVS real-time stages as capable of latency under 300 milliseconds. The same documentation notes that conventional over-the-top (OTT) streams may have latency as high as 30 seconds. These are product descriptions, not an end-to-end guarantee for every deployment.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Actual delay depends on the entire path: contribution, encoding, packaging, delivery, player behavior, and the viewer’s connection. If viewers need to respond nearly in real time, investigate IVS stages. If a few seconds of delay is acceptable for a managed channel experience, assess IVS low-latency channels. If the use case is a conventional broadcast or linear channel, assess the MediaLive-based workflow and measure latency across the complete configured system.
Understand the broadcast architecture and each service’s job
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution shows a resilient broadcast pattern: MediaLive ingests and encodes a feed into adaptive-bitrate outputs; MediaPackage ingests those outputs and packages HLS, DASH, and CMAF; CloudFront uses a MediaPackage endpoint as its origin and delivers the stream to viewers. The example uses parallel MediaLive processing and authorization between CloudFront and MediaPackage.

- MediaLive: live input processing and encoding.
- MediaPackage: packaging and origination for delivery formats and playback features.
- CloudFront: content delivery from the configured origin to viewers.
This is a reference architecture to adapt, not a mandatory stack for every stream. The specific formats, authorization, redundancy, and delivery path should follow your player requirements and operational design.
CloudFront detail for LL-HLS
If you configure CloudFront delivery for Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS), AWS’s developer guidance calls out the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query-string parameters for inclusion in the cache policy used for manifest requests. This is a configuration detail for that LL-HLS delivery pattern, not a general reason to choose CloudFront over another service.

Check input, playback, resilience, and access requirements
Before committing to an architecture, write down the requirements that can change the design. Test the chosen path with the actual encoder or contribution source and the player experience your audience will use.
- Latency: define the acceptable delay from source to viewer, including whether viewers must interact during the stream.
- Inputs and outputs: confirm how the live feed enters AWS and which output formats and player capabilities are needed.
- Playback features: decide whether you need DRM, access control, time-shifted viewing, or live-to-VOD.
- Resilience: determine the failure modes you need to tolerate and whether parallel processing or other redundancy is appropriate.
- Audience and delivery: estimate viewer traffic, geographic distribution, resolution mix, and expected bitrate.
- Operations: identify who will configure, monitor, and troubleshoot the ingest, encoding, packaging, and delivery path.
Do not assume that a reference architecture’s example configuration is required for a smaller or different workflow. Conversely, do not treat a simple working stream as evidence that it meets your availability, playback, or scaling requirements.

Estimate cost from the workload, not the service names
AWS uses different billing units across this architecture. IVS documentation separates input and output charges, with output cost varying by resolution and billing Region. AWS describes MediaLive charges by input and output channel-hours, and MediaPackage charges by ingested and originated data. CloudFront delivery costs depend on the distribution workload. Build the estimate from event duration, viewer count, bitrate and resolution mix, delivery geography, and the processing services required; check current AWS pricing for the actual design.
AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide gives an illustrative estimate of $69.74 for an approximately one-hour, 540p event with about 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia): $2.50 for encoding and packaging plus $67.24 for CloudFront distribution of 791 GB. The example assumes all viewers receive the highest bitrate, and AWS says prices are subject to change. It is a scenario estimate tied to those inputs and the guide’s revision, not a current quote or a general per-event rate.

Verify Region support and quotas before deployment
AWS says the reference solution uses MediaLive, MediaPackage, and MediaConnect, which are available only in specific Regions. Check current regional availability for every required service and confirm service quotas before choosing a deployment location. If MediaConnect is the input, AWS says it must be deployed in the same Region as its flow.
When an AWS broadcast architecture is not the problem you need to solve
If your goal is simply to keep a pre-recorded video or playlist running as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, that is a different use case from building an AWS broadcast pipeline. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs without a computer or home connection staying on, and is not an AWS service or a camera-based live production tool. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
