First determine whether FFmpeg is reading a stream or publishing one. FFmpeg’s documented reconnect flags apply to its HTTP protocol; they do not establish that an RTMP publishing output will automatically recover after an internet outage. For a failed RTMP publishing process, use an external supervisor or restart loop, then verify that the input resumes at the right point and YouTube accepts the new connection. A restart can replay a file or create a gap—it is not automatically a seamless resume.
Identify which connection dropped
Look at both ends of the FFmpeg command: the input after -i and the output URL. A bhajan stream might read an HTTP audio source, publish an audio or video file to an RTMP destination, or do both. Recovery depends on which connection fails.
- HTTP input: FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options include automatic reconnect controls for some disconnections and errors.
- RTMP output: FFmpeg documents how to publish to an RTMP server, but that example does not promise automatic recovery of the publishing connection after an outage.
Do not add HTTP reconnect flags to an RTMP output and assume they solve the problem. The options’ documented scope is the HTTP protocol, not RTMP publishing. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Use HTTP reconnect options only when FFmpeg reads HTTP
If the dropped connection is an HTTP input, consult the HTTP protocol options supported by your installed FFmpeg version. The official documentation describes these controls:

reconnectattempts to reconnect after a disconnection before the input reaches EOF.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error and causes reconnection. The FFmpeg documentation calls this useful for “live / endless streams.” This is still an HTTP option.reconnect_on_network_errorretries for TCP/TLS errors during connection establishment.reconnect_on_http_errorselects HTTP status codes or classes, such as4xxor5xx, for retry behavior.reconnect_streamedallows reconnects for streamed, non-seekable resources.reconnect_delay_max,reconnect_max_retries, andreconnect_delay_total_maxlimit retry delays or attempts.
These options do not guarantee that a source will return the same content position after reconnecting. Choose retry limits for the intended service lifetime and source behavior, and verify the result with the actual HTTP input.
For an RTMP output, restart the failed FFmpeg process externally
If FFmpeg exits when its RTMP publishing connection fails, a process supervisor or restart loop can launch it again. The documented RTMP example illustrates publishing a file in real time:

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
This is an example of RTMP publishing syntax, not a reconnect command. A supervisor can restart the process, but it cannot by itself guarantee gapless playback. If the input is a finite file, a new FFmpeg process may start it from the beginning unless your workflow manages the playback position. The destination must also accept a new connection or stream session.

The exact supervisor configuration depends on your operating system, FFmpeg command, input, and destination. Without those details, a universal restart command could restart the wrong point, loop unexpectedly, or fail to reconnect to the receiving service.
Diagnose the failure before changing the command
- Mark the protocols. Identify the input URL and protocol after
-i, then identify the output URL and protocol. Decide whether FFmpeg is pulling HTTP, publishing RTMP, or doing both. - Check your local build. Run
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -protocols. Protocol availability depends on how FFmpeg was built, so do not assume every protocol or option is present. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes checking supported protocols with-protocols. - For an HTTP input, check the installed version’s HTTP protocol options and configure retry limits for the source and expected stream lifetime.
- For an RTMP output that exits, configure a service manager or external supervisor to relaunch FFmpeg. Test where the input resumes and whether the destination accepts the reconnect.
- Save and inspect logs. Distinguish DNS or connection failures, timeouts, authentication rejection, and destination-side session rejection. These point to different fixes; FFmpeg’s protocol documentation cannot determine a specific provider’s behavior.
Understand timeouts versus reconnection
rw_timeout sets the maximum time, in microseconds, to wait for network read or write operations. It can help bound how long a stalled operation waits, but it is a timeout—not a retry policy, process restart, or guarantee that a destination session can resume. The option and build-dependent protocol support are described in the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
