A plain HTTP download may capture only the initial HTML, before JavaScript renders the price. With Playwright, the dependable wait is specific to the page—not a generic network-idle state.
Capture the page after its price renders
Playwright runs the page in a browser, so the site’s JavaScript can render the product and price before capture. First inspect the page to find a selector that identifies the price on that site. There is no universal price selector: a selector that works for one retailer may match nothing, or the wrong element, on another.
- Open the product page with
page.goto(). - Wait for the site-specific price locator to become visible.
- Check that the locator contains non-empty text when the price itself is the evidence you need.
- Capture the viewport, the price element, or the full page, depending on the intended image.
This JavaScript example uses Playwright’s library API. Replace the selector with one you have verified in the target page’s DOM. The example is a pattern, not a tested selector for a particular retailer.

If the page uses a framework that replaces the price node during rendering, consider re-reading the locator’s text after it becomes visible rather than retaining an element handle.

Choose a readiness condition that proves the price is ready
A navigation event only describes browser loading activity; it does not guarantee that an application has finished calculating or inserting a price. Prefer a locator for the actual price and an assertion on its text. Playwright’s documentation discourages networkidle as a readiness check and defines it as having no network connections for at least 500 ms. A page can reach that state before a delayed price update, or keep connections open after the price is ready. See the Playwright Page API.
Use load or domcontentloaded as a navigation milestone if it fits the page, then make the price locator—not that milestone—the final capture gate. If the product page renders the price only after choosing a variant, region, or other option, perform that interaction first and wait for the resulting price text. The exact interaction and selector depend on the site.

Playwright supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot types. PNG is a sensible default when clarity matters; JPEG or WebP may better suit sharing or storage constraints. The official documentation covers viewport, element, and full-page capture and the screenshot API options.
If the price or other relevant content is below the fold and loads lazily, scroll that section into view before capture, then verify the price is still visible. Full-page capture extends the screenshot to the page’s scrollable content, but the page still needs time and the right interaction to populate dynamic content.

When to use manual capture, Playwright, or a hosted service
- Manual browser capture: convenient for a one-off image when the price is visibly loaded and no repeatable workflow is needed. You must ensure the correct product state and capture scope yourself.
- Playwright: useful for repeatable captures and when you need to wait on a specific page element or interact with the page. You are responsible for browser setup, selector maintenance, and running the capture infrastructure.
- Hosted screenshot service: can avoid managing browser infrastructure, but confirm that its controls suit the target page. This category is not a guarantee that any service can handle every retailer’s JavaScript price flow or required interactions.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect prices
- The selector times out: inspect the rendered page and replace the example selector with the actual price selector. The page may require a variant choice or another interaction before the price exists.
- The screenshot has a blank price: wait for the locator to be visible and confirm its text is non-empty before capturing. Visibility alone does not establish that text has loaded.
- The page looks loaded but the price changes later: use a price-specific wait or assertion after the relevant page action. Do not treat
networkidleas proof that the price is final. - The price is missing from a full-page image: if content is lazy-loaded, scroll the relevant section into view and verify the price before capture.
- The image cuts off surrounding content: decide whether you need viewport, element, or full-page scope; an element screenshot is intentionally focused, while full-page capture includes the scrollable page.
- The script fails before capture: verify Playwright and its browser are installed in the environment running the script, and check that the locator matches the page currently served to that browser.
Reliability and cost considerations
For repeat captures, selectors and page behavior can change when the retailer updates its layout or price flow; treat the locator and any required interactions as page-specific configuration. Capture only after checking the rendered text, and retain enough surrounding context in the screenshot if the image needs to show which product or option the price belongs to. The official Playwright guidance reviewed for this workflow provides no success-rate, speed, or performance benchmark, so plan timing around the target page rather than assuming a universal wait duration.
