To restart FFmpeg after it crashes, run it as the foreground process of a systemd service with Restart=on-failure and a deliberate RestartSec= delay. That handles qualifying process exits; it does not guarantee that YouTube has resumed the broadcast, or recover every connection failure while FFmpeg is still running. Check both the service and YouTube Live Control Room after recovery.
What automatic restart can—and cannot—fix
There are three different failure points to separate:
- FFmpeg exits. A process supervisor such as systemd can relaunch it after qualifying failures.
- FFmpeg remains alive but a connection or output fails. Protocol-specific reconnect options or FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer may help in some cases, depending on the protocol, direction, and error.
- The encoder runs but the YouTube broadcast is not visible. You must check the event in Live Control Room and verify viewer-side playback; a restarted process alone does not confirm that the sermon is live.
An automatic restart is not a repair for a persistent cause. An invalid stream key, unavailable input, rejected ingest, incompatible settings, or continuing network fault can make the same command fail again.
Configure systemd to restart FFmpeg after a failure
Use a long-running service with FFmpeg as its main foreground process. Avoid a shell wrapper that exits while leaving FFmpeg running as an unmanaged child. The following is an illustrative unit template, not a tested command for every host:

- Confirm the FFmpeg binary path, input, codecs, output protocol, service account permissions, and installed systemd version. The online FFmpeg documentation tracks current development and may not match the locally installed build.
- Replace the bracketed placeholders with the actual command options, YouTube ingest URL, and stream key. Protect the stream key as a credential; do not post it publicly or expose it through broadly accessible files or logs.
Restart=on-failurerestarts after qualifying failures such as a non-zero exit, qualifying signal, timeout, or watchdog failure, subject to systemd rate limits. It does not undo an intentionalsystemctl stop. The systemd service manual calls this the recommended choice for long-running services.RestartSec=5sis an example delay, not a universal recommendation. The systemd manual’s default is 100 milliseconds; choose a deliberate delay appropriate to the service and failure. A delay can reduce rapid restart loops, but it cannot correct the cause of a repeated failure.
After creating or editing the unit, use the host’s normal systemd workflow to reload units and start the service. Inspect it with systemctl status and follow its journal with journalctl -u <service> -f, replacing <service> with the unit name. Check the host’s systemd documentation for exact commands and behavior on its installed version.
Choose recovery for the failure layer

When to examine protocol reconnect options
FFmpeg documents protocol-specific options that include reconnecting before EOF, reconnecting on EOF for live or endless inputs, retrying on network errors, and limiting retries. They apply only under the documented conditions for the protocol in use. Do not treat them as universal output-recovery switches.

When to examine the FIFO muxer
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers retry and recovery behavior for some output errors while processing continues. It is a separate mechanism from systemd: systemd reacts to process state, while FIFO recovery can address some output failures without the process exiting. Neither mechanism guarantees recovery from a permanent failure.
Confirm the YouTube broadcast after a restart
- Check the systemd service state and journal. Find the first FFmpeg error; later retry messages may obscure the original cause.
- In the encoder command, confirm that the YouTube Live server URL and stream key are current and correctly configured. Keep the key private.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the intended event. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says to wait for the stream preview; for a scheduled stream, use its Go Live control as directed in the event workflow.
- Check that the intended broadcast is active, then verify playback from the viewer side. Encoder activity or a running service is not proof that viewers can watch.
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingest protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance also gives resolution- and frame-rate-specific codec, audio, keyframe, and bitrate recommendations. Match the current YouTube guidance to the actual FFmpeg command. YouTube currently recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; this is an encoder setting recommendation, not a fix for restart failures. The YouTube Help pages do not display publication dates, so consult the live guidance when configuring a stream.

Troubleshoot in this order
- Read the original error. Follow the service journal and locate the earliest relevant FFmpeg message.
- Determine whether FFmpeg exited. If it did, check the unit’s restart policy, delay, rate limits, and service logs. If it is still active, a process-exit policy may not trigger.
- Identify the failing side. Establish whether the issue is with an input connection or the publishing output, then check whether a documented reconnect option matches that protocol and direction. Consider FIFO recovery only for an appropriate output failure.
- Validate the persistent dependencies. Check the input source, stream URL and key, encoder options, and network path. Do not expose the stream key while seeking help.
- Verify the event and playback. Use Live Control Room and a viewer endpoint to distinguish an encoder restart from a restored public stream. If the same error persists, diagnose the cause rather than repeatedly restarting an unchanged command.
