First determine whether OBS playback actually stops, pauses when a scene changes, becomes choppy under load, or continues locally while viewers buffer. Those symptoms have different fixes. For an OBS playlist, check the VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist and Visibility Behaviour first; for a single file in Media Source, check Loop.
1. Identify what is freezing
Watch the OBS preview and the media source when the problem occurs. If the media position stops or playback reaches the end and stays there, troubleshoot the source. If playback stops after a scene switch or after the source is hidden, check visibility behavior. If the media continues but the output is choppy or OBS reports encoding overload, troubleshoot performance. If OBS continues playing but viewers see buffering or dropped frames, investigate stream delivery instead.
OBS distinguishes its built-in Media Source for media files from VLC Video, which supports playlists. The available controls depend on which source you added. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
2. Check the loop setting for your source
For a VLC Video playlist
- In OBS, select the scene containing the playlist, then select its VLC Video source in the Sources list.
- Open the source properties and confirm the playlist contains the intended media files.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS describes this control as specifying whether the source should restart after it has run out of media files. It is listed as on by default, but verify it rather than assuming the default is still in effect.
- Apply the change and observe what happens when the last playlist item ends. If playback still stops, confirm the playlist entries are valid and that the source is not being paused or stopped when hidden.
For a single file in Media Source
- Select the Media Source in the scene’s Sources list and open its properties.
- Confirm the intended file is selected and enable Loop.
- Apply the setting and check whether the file restarts after reaching its end.
Media Source and VLC Video have separate controls; enabling Loop on a Media Source does not set Loop Playlist on a VLC Video source.

3. If playback stops when scenes change
VLC Video has a Visibility Behaviour setting that determines what happens when the source is not visible. Depending on the selected option, playback can continue, pause, or stop while hidden. Open the VLC Video source properties and choose the behavior that fits your scene setup. If you expect audio or video to continue through scene changes, do not leave the source configured to pause or stop when hidden.
Test the actual scene transition that precedes the freeze. A source can appear to have a looping problem when it is instead being hidden and paused or stopped.

4. If the VLC playlist source is missing or behaves unexpectedly
VLC Video relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Check that the installed VLC architecture matches OBS if the source is unavailable or media support is not behaving as expected. OBS’s Sources Guide explains the available source types.
VLC Video also exposes Network caching (ms); the OBS page shows a default of 400. The documentation does not recommend changing this value as a general fix for a playlist that freezes. Treat it as a targeted setting only when you have a specific network-media symptom to investigate.

5. If playback advances but the stream is choppy
A playlist that advances in OBS while the output stutters points toward rendering or encoding load, not necessarily a loop failure. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting recommends reducing costly sources, using media resolution suited to the output, removing unnecessary filters, and simplifying complex scenes.
- Check whether OBS reports encoding overload at the time the output becomes choppy.
- Reduce unnecessary filters and simplify scenes with expensive sources.
- Use media at a resolution appropriate to the stream output rather than adding avoidable processing load.
- Change one relevant factor at a time, then observe whether playback and output improve.
These are performance remedies; they do not correct a disabled Loop or Loop Playlist setting.

6. If OBS plays normally but viewers report buffering
Do not diagnose a frozen playlist from viewer buffering alone. If the media is still moving locally in OBS, check the connection and bitrate path. OBS defines dropped frames as a connection stability or bitrate-capacity issue and provides steps in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30.
- Confirm whether OBS reports dropped frames while the local preview continues.
- Use OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance to investigate connection stability and bitrate capacity.
- Keep this branch separate from source-loop and scene-visibility checks; each addresses a different failure mode.
7. A practical check before leaving a bhajan stream running
- Confirm the source type: Media Source for a single file, VLC Video for a playlist.
- Verify the corresponding loop control: Loop or Loop Playlist.
- Check the VLC Video source’s Visibility Behaviour if scenes change or the source can be hidden.
- Observe the source through a file transition and any planned scene changes.
- If playback remains active but output is poor, check rendering/encoding load; if viewers buffer while local playback continues, check connection stability and bitrate capacity.
No setting in the cited OBS documentation guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation. If these checks do not expose the cause, the useful next details are your operating system, OBS version, file formats, scene changes, and the OBS log around the failure.
