On a Linux server that uses systemd, run the stream process in the foreground as a system service, enable the service at boot, and set a restart policy for unexpected exits. The example below uses Liquidsoap; adapt its paths, account, and dependencies to your installation. A service showing as active does not by itself prove that listeners can hear the Gurbani stream.
What needs to happen after a reboot
Two separate systemd controls are involved. Enabling a unit arranges for it to start through its configured boot target; the Restart= setting determines what systemd does when the managed process exits or times out. Enabling alone does not restart a process that later crashes, and a restart policy alone does not enable the service at boot. See the Debian systemd services guide and systemd.service(5).
The example is for a Liquidsoap process producing a stream. If your Gurbani stream uses different software, keep the systemd approach but use that software’s actual foreground command and configuration. The audio generator, streaming server, and listener are separate links in the chain; Liquidsoap’s quickstart describes this generator-to-server-to-player arrangement.
Create a systemd service for Liquidsoap
Liquidsoap recommends running it in the foreground under a service manager. Its production guide gives a systemd example and notes that packages on Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Alpine create a liquidsoap account and group. Confirm your package actually created them and that the account can read the script and media files before using those values. See Liquidsoap’s production guide.

- Create
/etc/systemd/system/gurbani-radio.servicewith root privileges. - Paste this unit, then change the executable, script path, and account if your installation differs:

Type=forkingwhen the process runs in the foreground; systemd should supervise the process it starts directly.
Choose a restart policy
Restart=on-failure is systemd’s recommended policy for long-running services: it restarts after failure, rather than treating every deliberate clean exit as a reason to relaunch. Liquidsoap’s production example uses Restart=always, which also restarts after a clean exit. Choose always only if every exit should be followed by another launch. An intentional stop issued through systemd is not automatically undone by the restart policy. Repeated rapid failures may also encounter systemd start-rate limiting; restarting forever will not fix a broken script, missing file, or invalid credential.
Order startup after networking
Wants=network-online.target pulls in that target and After=network-online.target orders the service after it. Liquidsoap’s example uses both. They do not guarantee that a particular remote endpoint is reachable: the meaning and behavior of the target depend on the host’s network manager and configuration.

Validate, enable, and start the service
After editing a Liquidsoap script, check it before restarting the service:
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/gurbani.liqThen tell systemd to reload unit definitions, enable the unit for boot, start it now, and inspect its state and logs:

sudo systemctl enable --now gurbani-radio.service

systemctl status gurbani-radio.service
journalctl -u gurbani-radio.service -benable --now both enables the unit and starts it immediately. The current-boot journal helps expose startup errors; access to logs may depend on host permissions. The Debian service guide documents reloading unit files, enabling services, and checking status; Liquidsoap’s production guide demonstrates systemctl enable --now.
Prove it survives a reboot
- Plan a maintenance window so the reboot does not unexpectedly interrupt listeners.
- Reboot the server.
- After it returns, run
systemctl is-enabled gurbani-radio.service,systemctl status gurbani-radio.service, andjournalctl -u gurbani-radio.service -b. - Open the public stream URL or connect with an independent player and listen. Confirm the expected audio is playing, not merely that systemd reports an active process.
A successful check of the service is only one part of the verification. The generator may be running while its output, streaming-server mount or endpoint, or listener URL is misconfigured.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
- The service is disabled. Enable the correct unit with
sudo systemctl enable gurbani-radio.service. Check the exact service name if the command reports that the unit cannot be found. - The command works manually but the unit fails. Compare the real executable and script paths with
ExecStart, then check the current-boot journal. Confirm the configured service account can read the script, configuration, and audio files. - The service starts before a remote destination is usable. Check the host’s network manager and whether it actually brings up
network-online.target. The ordering directives do not test a specific remote endpoint. - The process repeatedly crashes. Read the journal for the underlying script, permission, dependency, or credential error. Fix the cause rather than relying on repeated restarts; systemd can apply start-rate limits.
- The service is active but listeners hear silence. Check the audio source and generator output, the streaming server’s mount or endpoint, and the URL listeners use, one at a time. A running generator does not establish that audio reaches the player.
If the stream uses Icecast
Confirm Icecast is installed and configured separately from Liquidsoap, and check that its source credentials and admin password are not public defaults if the server is exposed. Liquidsoap’s quickstart covers output.icecast and advises changing those passwords when publicly exposed.
