For a 24/7 podcast stream, normalize episodes individually before they enter the playlist when possible. Measure programme loudness in LUFS, bring episodes toward a consistent editorial target, check true peaks, then listen to episode transitions. A peak meter alone cannot tell you whether whole episodes sound equally loud.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies audio delivery settings, but it does not set a required LUFS target for live streams. EBU guidance offers useful reference points—not a YouTube preset or a guarantee of how every listener’s device will sound.

What to measure: programme loudness and peaks

Programme loudness

Integrated or programme loudness, reported in LUFS, gives you a way to compare the overall level of complete episodes or representative segments. It is more useful for matching episode-to-episode perceived loudness than comparing their loudest waveform peaks. Measure the whole programme, including recurring intros, ads, music beds, and interstitials if they will be part of the actual stream.

True peaks and clipping

Peak control answers a different question: whether brief signal peaks risk clipping, especially after gain changes or encoding. Check true peak as well as digital clipping, and leave the encoded output below 0 dBFS. A track can have a suitable integrated LUFS reading and still contain peaks that need attention.

OBS’s documented meter is not an integrated loudness meter: its meter uses a sample peak programme meter, while its VU display is an RMS reading over 300 ms. Use a loudness meter that reports integrated or programme loudness for LUFS measurements; do not infer LUFS from OBS’s meter.

What LUFS target should you use?

There is no YouTube Live LUFS target in the reviewed YouTube encoder guidance. Choose and document an editorial target that suits your distribution chain rather than treating one number as a platform rule.

  • −23 LUFS: EBU R 128 version 5.0, published in November 2023, recommends this average programme loudness and the use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. It is a broadcast standards reference, not an automatic target for every platform or listening context.
  • −23.0 LUFS for unchanged streaming: EBU R 128 S2 version 3, published in November 2023, gives this as its baseline approach for streaming unchanged.
  • −20.0 to −16.0 LUFS in a specific distribution context: EBU R 128 S2 describes this interim distribution range when metadata is not being used to manage device gain and the broadcaster wants to control dynamic treatment before streaming. It is conditional guidance, not a universal podcast or YouTube recommendation.

EBU R 128 S2 distinguishes listening environments with ample playback gain and headroom from devices with limited gain or louder surroundings, such as smartphones. That context is one reason a single LUFS number cannot guarantee the same listening experience everywhere. ATSC lists A/85:2026-07, approved 8 July 2026, as its current A/85 version; it is a digital-television recommended practice, not a YouTube-specific podcast preset.

Normalize episodes before they enter the playlist

  1. Choose representative material. Include the quietest and loudest episodes, plus recurring intros, ads, music beds, or interstitials. Do not set a target from a short isolated phrase.
  2. Measure consistently. Use a loudness meter that reports integrated/programme loudness, and record readings the same way for each episode or representative segment.
  3. Select a target for your distribution chain. If you use an EBU reference, identify the standard and context. Do not label either EBU figure as a YouTube requirement.
  4. Apply gain to approach the target. Use compression only when needed to manage large speech-level variations. Use limiting to control true peaks when gain changes would otherwise leave insufficient headroom.
  5. Check the result. Re-measure programme loudness and inspect true peaks and digital clipping after processing. Listen to the episode itself rather than relying only on meters.
  6. Audition playlist transitions. Listen from the end of one episode into the next. Include actual silence, music beds, ads, and interstitials where applicable; a good average for each file does not guarantee a smooth transition.

Avoid aggressive compression or limiting simply to make every moment equally loud. It can make speech tiring and remove expressive emphasis.

When to use real-time correction instead

If the playlist is assembled live and offline processing is impractical, a real-time loudness controller can help manage longer-term level differences. It cannot predict the audio that comes next, however, and may change dynamics that were intended by the speaker or producer.

The AES Loudness Normalization resource, accessed in 2026, describes a rolling analysis period between 30 seconds and two minutes for active real-time controllers. Longer periods usually sound more natural and create fewer audible artifacts, but react less quickly to a sudden level change. Treat that range as contextual guidance, not a mandatory setting.

  • Offline normalization is generally preferable when you can prepare episodes: you can inspect and correct each programme and its true peaks before broadcast, and compare complete episodes and transitions.
  • Real-time correction can be practical for an assembled-live playlist, but watch for pumping, abrupt level shifts, and flattened dynamics. It cannot inspect future content or guarantee the same control over true peaks as preparation before broadcast.

Set the YouTube audio delivery format and test it

YouTube’s current Live encoder guidance specifies AAC or MP3 audio, stereo at 44.1 kHz, and 128 Kbps stereo. These are transport settings, not LUFS targets. Test with audio and video activity similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health before relying on the setup.

  1. Configure the encoder’s audio output for AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 Kbps stereo in line with YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
  2. Run a representative test stream. Use the processed podcast audio and the kind of video activity planned for the continuous stream.
  3. Listen to the YouTube stream itself. Check speech level, peaks, episode transitions, and any pumping or sudden shifts after the encoding and delivery path.
  4. Monitor stream health during the test. Repeat the check after changing source gain, filters, playlist composition, or encoder settings.

Troubleshoot uneven or distorted podcast audio

  • Episodes still sound different, despite similar peak readings: peak levels do not measure integrated LUFS. Measure programme loudness with a proper loudness meter and compare complete episodes or representative segments.
  • The meter looks safe, but audio distorts: inspect true peaks and digital clipping after gain changes and processing. Keep encoded output below 0 dBFS and reduce gain or adjust limiting if peaks clip.
  • Speech pumps or sounds unnaturally flat: reduce compression or limiting, or use a longer real-time controller analysis period. Preserve intentional emphasis rather than forcing every moment to the same level.
  • The start of a new episode sounds too loud or quiet: audition the transition as it will actually play, including silence and any intervening music or ads. Revisit the individual episode level or the transition material.
  • The test sounds different from the prepared files: test through the live encoder and the actual YouTube stream. Recheck after source, filter, playlist, or encoder changes and monitor stream health.

Or let it run in the cloud
