To rotate sermons in a 24/7 YouTube live stream, set playback in the encoder—not in YouTube’s viewer-side repeat controls. In OBS Studio, loop one recording with a Media Source, or rotate several recordings with a VLC Video source and Loop Playlist enabled. OBS sends that repeating feed to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key.
Choose how sermons should repeat

YouTube’s repeat button affects what an individual viewer watches; it does not tell a live encoder to rotate sermons. Configure the source that OBS sends as the live feed.
Set up a repeating sermon stream in OBS
- Confirm livestream access. The channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder guidance. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
- Prepare the recordings. Keep the sermon video files accessible on the computer that will run OBS. Decide whether you want one sermon to repeat or a playlist of sermons in a deliberate order.
- Configure one recording. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the recording, and turn on Loop.
- Or configure several recordings. Install VLC, add an OBS VLC Video source, load the sermon files in the intended order, and turn on Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle off if the order matters. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a credential: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your channel. YouTube: Go live with an encoder.
- Preview before broadcasting. Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room before relying on the public broadcast. Confirm the correct sermon is playing and that both picture and sound are present.
- Keep the playback system running. The computer, OBS, media files, power, and internet connection all need to remain available for this do-it-yourself setup. YouTube recommends testing, previewing, monitoring audio and video, and allowing upload-bandwidth headroom; a network disruption can interrupt a stream. Test the playlist and transitions
Before putting a playlist on a public channel, play it through in OBS, including the transition from its last file back to the first. OBS documents playlist looping, but that does not establish that every combination of files will transition gaplessly. Testing the actual sermons is the practical way to catch missing files, unexpected ordering, audio-level changes, or a boundary that needs attention.
Plan separately for saved replays
If the church needs YouTube to save an archived replay, plan broadcast sessions to end before 12 hours and restart as needed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise archiving for streams longer than that. YouTube Help: Find your live stream archive.

Copyright and sermon content
A live stream is still subject to YouTube’s copyright rules. Confirm that the church has the necessary rights for every element in each recording, including music, readings, slides, and third-party clips; permission to use a work in an in-person service does not by itself establish permission for an online broadcast. YouTube can interrupt or restrict live streams for policy or copyright issues. Review the copyright safety checklist before broadcasting. Repeating a recording does not change the rights status of its content.
Common problems and fixes
- The same sermon keeps playing. Check whether you configured a single Media Source with Loop rather than a VLC Video playlist. For rotation, add the sermon files to the VLC playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
- The playlist stops at the end. Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled and that the source can access all listed files. If order matters, turn shuffle off.
- The VLC source is missing or does not work. Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- YouTube does not receive the broadcast. Recheck the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the channel is eligible to livestream, and inspect the Live Control Room preview before going public.
- Video or audio breaks up. Test the connection and leave upload-bandwidth headroom, then monitor the preview and the broadcast. A local encoder depends on the computer and network remaining available.
- The archived replay is unavailable. Check the session length. Automatic archiving is documented for streams under 12 hours, not for longer streams.
