If an episode’s audio file is missing or unreachable when YouTube fetches it from an RSS feed, YouTube’s public guidance does not say exactly what happens. It does not document whether the episode is skipped, shown with an error, or published in an unavailable state. If audio is replaced after the episode is already on YouTube, the existing video does not update: re-upload the episode from RSS in YouTube Studio to create a new video and make the old one private.
First, identify which RSS workflow you mean
Creators can connect an RSS feed to YouTube Studio so selected episodes become videos on their channel. Separately, listeners can add a podcast’s RSS URL to their personal YouTube Music library. These are different features, and the creator-side re-upload instructions do not describe how to repair a listener-added feed.
| Workflow | Who connects the feed | Where episodes appear | What YouTube creates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creator RSS delivery (YouTube Help) | The channel creator, in YouTube Studio | As videos in the channel’s podcast playlist | For audio-first episodes, a video using the show’s art as a static image |
| Listener-added RSS feed (YouTube Music Help) | The listener, in their YouTube Music library | In that listener’s personal library | A library entry; it is not the creator’s channel video playlist |
YouTube describes a podcast as a playlist, with episodes represented by videos. The listener-added RSS option has fewer features: YouTube says it does not provide audio/video switching, likes or dislikes, sharing, a podcast channel page, reporting, or captions. See YouTube Music’s RSS-feed guidance.
If the episode file is missing when YouTube fetches the feed
YouTube’s creator guidance does not specify the ingestion result when an episode’s RSS enclosure URL is missing or inaccessible. In particular, it does not say whether YouTube skips the item, displays a particular error, publishes a video that cannot play, or retries automatically. Do not treat any one of those outcomes as guaranteed.

Start by checking that the episode is present in the exact RSS feed connected to the channel and that its enclosure points to the intended audio file. If the episode is absent from the feed, correct the feed or contact the podcast host: YouTube can only ingest items the feed supplies. This is a practical troubleshooting step based on the feed-delivery model, not a documented YouTube error rule.
For a newly connected feed or newly submitted episodes, allow for processing time. YouTube says episodes can take a few days to upload during feed setup, and recommends waiting until all selected episodes have finished uploading before making the podcast public. That advice describes initial setup; it does not guarantee a fix for an unreachable audio file. YouTube’s RSS delivery instructions cover setup and upload timing.

If you replaced audio after the YouTube video was published
Replacing the audio file in the RSS feed does not replace audio in an existing YouTube video. YouTube says published RSS-ingested video audio cannot be updated. Use Studio’s re-upload action instead:
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Content → Podcasts.
- Open the podcast’s Videos list and find the episode.
- Open that episode’s menu and choose Re-upload from RSS feed.
- Allow the new video to be created. YouTube makes the previous video private; it does not simply swap the audio in place.
YouTube says the older private video retains access to metrics such as views and comments. Check the new video’s publication and visibility before directing listeners to it. YouTube Help explains the RSS re-upload behavior.

If an episode seems missing, out of order, or unavailable
Confirm the right feed and location
For a creator-side issue, verify the exact RSS URL connected to the channel and whether the episode is actually listed there. If it is missing from the feed, fix it with the podcast host before expecting YouTube to ingest it. For a listener-side issue, confirm whether the show was added to YouTube Music by RSS rather than delivered to a creator’s channel.
Allow for initial processing
If the episode was just submitted as part of a new feed setup, wait for the upload to complete; YouTube says this can take a few days. If it remains absent after the feed is corrected and processing time has passed, the official guidance does not establish a specific missing-enclosure error or recovery guarantee. Check the feed and Studio status, then consult YouTube or the podcast host for the case-specific issue.

Check release-date ordering
RSS-ingested video ordering follows the feed’s release date when one is available; otherwise YouTube uses its publish date. YouTube says it does not verify the release date, and the date displayed can differ across surfaces. An episode appearing out of order therefore does not, by itself, establish that its audio file is missing. See YouTube’s RSS delivery guidance.
Distinguish deletion from removal in the RSS feed
Deleting an episode video from the YouTube podcast while leaving that episode in the RSS feed is different from removing the episode from the feed. YouTube says a deleted video can be re-uploaded while its episode remains in the feed. To hide a video from the podcast, set its visibility to private rather than relying on deletion. YouTube documents this behavior in its RSS FAQ.

For a listener-added YouTube Music feed
YouTube says listener-added RSS shows can take minutes or longer to appear in the library. Removing and re-adding the feed is available as a library action, but YouTube does not promise that it repairs an unavailable enclosure. Treat it as a way to refresh your library entry, not a verified cure for a missing source file. YouTube Music’s help page describes this listener workflow.
