A stream dropping once does not prove that your ISP’s carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) timed out. First record the exact drop time and YouTube Live Control Room status, then check the encoder, local recording and connection. Compare wired and Wi-Fi results, and—if possible—test another access network. Only then ask your ISP whether your connection is behind CGNAT and whether it can check the matching session logs.
What a CGNAT timeout would—and would not—mean
CGNAT is a form of network address translation used by an internet provider to share public IPv4 addresses among customers. A NAT device keeps temporary mappings between traffic on one side of the network and traffic on the other. If a relevant mapping expires or otherwise fails, it could affect a connection—but a YouTube stream interruption alone does not identify that mechanism.
A timeout is only one possible explanation for a network-path failure. Congestion, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, routing, firewall behavior, an encoder problem, or a YouTube-side error can produce interruptions too. The connection’s transport protocol and the provider’s NAT behavior matter; do not assume either from the fact that the stream dropped.
There is no established India-wide figure here for how many consumer connections use CGNAT, nor a confirmed timeout value for any particular Indian ISP’s YouTube traffic. The Government of India TEC study paper concerns tests in its own context; it should not be generalized to your provider or connection.

How do I check whether a YouTube stream drop is caused by a CGNAT timeout in India?
Build an evidence record before changing several things at once. Keep the encoder, bitrate, stream destination, and content as constant as practical when comparing runs.
- Record the event. Note the local date and time, time zone, how long the stream had been running, and the exact status or error text shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Record whether viewers also lost the feed and whether the stream recovered by itself. YouTube’s stream-health panel and error messages can help tie a symptom to the event.
- Check the encoder and source. Save encoder logs and dropped-frame statistics for the period around the interruption. Check CPU load, audio and video source health, and the local recording. If the local file is corrupt or the encoder reports errors, investigate the source or encoder before blaming the ISP.
- Check connection capacity and bitrate. Run a sustained upload test under conditions similar to the live stream, including the usual household or office load. Compare the available upload capacity with the encoder’s configured bitrate. For a controlled test, lower the bitrate to a conservative setting and use YouTube’s current encoder-setting guidance for the selected resolution and protocol. If the lower setting is stable while the original is not, that points to a capacity or stability issue, not specifically to CGNAT.
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi. Repeat a test over a wired connection, keeping the other settings steady. Avoid other heavy uploads during the comparison and record whether the problem changes. A Cat6 Ethernet cable can be an optional aid for this comparison; it is not a CGNAT detector or a guaranteed fix.
- Try another access network if practical. A short controlled test using a different ISP or a mobile hotspot can help localize the problem. Keep the same encoder, settings, stream destination, and content as far as practical. Success on the alternate network makes the original path more suspect, but congestion, routing, Wi-Fi, firewalling, and ISP policy remain possible explanations alongside NAT.
- Check whether the connection may be behind carrier NAT. Compare the router’s WAN IPv4 address with the public IPv4 address observed outside the router. A mismatch, or a WAN address that is not publicly routed, is a clue to upstream NAT. It does not by itself establish that the provider’s carrier network is the source of that NAT, and it does not show that a mapping timed out during your stream. Ask the ISP directly whether your account uses CGNAT and whether a public IPv4 option or relevant session logs are available.
- Test the timeout hypothesis without assuming it. Keep a stream actively sending and note whether failures recur at a similar elapsed time. Compare that with any failure that happens only after a period without traffic: an idle-only failure is more consistent with an idle-mapping hypothesis than a failure during continuous traffic, but neither pattern proves the cause. Ask the ISP to correlate its NAT or session records with your exact timestamp and establish which flow and protocol they are examining.
- Rule out YouTube or policy events. Review the stream-health message and YouTube Studio dashboard for errors, notices, strikes, or copyright-related interruptions. A platform or policy action can explain a stopped stream without a network timeout.
Does a stream dropping after a few minutes prove my ISP’s CGNAT is timing out?
No. A repeatable elapsed time is useful evidence to share with the provider, but it does not establish the mechanism. For example, the failure could be tied to bitrate capacity, an encoder or source issue, a route problem, or a platform error. Even a confirmed CGNAT connection does not prove that its timer caused a particular interruption.

The IETF’s RFC 4787 says UDP mapping timeout implementations vary, including in the timer value and how the timer is refreshed. Published in 2007, its guidance says a UDP mapping timer must not expire in less than two minutes except for a narrow well-known-port exception, and recommends a default of five minutes or more. Those are standards recommendations—not measurements of Indian ISP settings, proof that your stream used an affected UDP flow, or a basis for inferring YouTube’s ingest transport.
How to read the results
| What you observe | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupt local archive, encoder errors, unhealthy sources, or excessive CPU load | Prioritize the encoder, computer, or audio/video source. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises checking encoder health and the local archive. | A CGNAT timeout. |
| Encoder appears healthy, but OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections | Investigate upload headroom and route stability. OBS describes these symptoms as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server; excessive dropped frames can lead to disconnection. | Which network component is at fault. Congestion, packet loss, Wi-Fi, routing, firewalling, and NAT remain possible. |
| Other services fail at the same time as the YouTube stream | An access-path problem becomes more plausible. | CGNAT specifically, or a timeout. |
| Only YouTube ingest fails | Check YouTube’s health status and messages, ingest endpoint selection, encoder configuration, and platform notices. | That the ISP is responsible. |
| Router WAN IPv4 differs from the externally visible IPv4, and the ISP confirms carrier NAT | Your connection is behind CGNAT, based on the provider’s confirmation and the address evidence. | The provider’s timer value or the cause of one stream interruption. |
| Failures recur at a similar elapsed time | A repeatable pattern worth giving the ISP, with timestamps and test conditions. | A NAT timeout without evidence about the flow, protocol, and provider session records. |
What to give your ISP
Ask for a review of a specific event, not a general confirmation that “the internet dropped.” Include the local timestamp and time zone, stream duration, YouTube status or error text, encoder logs, dropped-frame statistics, and whether the local recording remained intact. Tell support whether you were on Ethernet or Wi-Fi, the configured bitrate, whether other services failed, and whether a controlled test on another access network behaved differently.

Ask these questions:
- Is this connection behind CGNAT, and can you confirm that for my account?
- Can you inspect the relevant NAT or session logs for the timestamp I provided?
- Can you identify the flow and protocol involved and whether the session expired, reset, or failed for another reason?
- Is a public IPv4 option available for this connection, and what conditions or costs apply?
RFC 6888 describes requirements for carrier-grade NAT, but it cannot tell you whether your individual ISP account uses it. The provider or suitable connection-specific evidence is needed to confirm carrier-side placement.
