If OBS’s Network Dropped Frames counter rises during a church service, first check the connection between the streaming computer and YouTube—not just the computer’s processing power. Reduce the stream bitrate to a level the church’s upload connection can sustain, test over wired Ethernet, and compare OBS’s statistics with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. The right fix depends on where the connection is failing; no single setting or equipment upgrade is guaranteed to solve it.

First, identify which frames are being lost

OBS has different statistics for different problems. An increasing network-dropped-frame count points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a configured bitrate the connection cannot sustain. It does not, by itself, mean the computer is too slow to encode or render. Follow the network troubleshooting steps below for that counter; if a different OBS rendering or encoding counter is rising, this is a different diagnostic branch.

At the same time, look at stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s health information can flag a configuration issue, while an ingestion warning can indicate that YouTube is not receiving enough video. Neither OBS’s counter nor a YouTube warning alone pinpoints every fault between the church and the ingest server. See the OBS connection troubleshooting guide, YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance, and Google’s LiveStream configuration issue descriptions.

Record a baseline before changing settings

  • Note when the counter starts rising, how long it rises, and the percentage of frames dropped.
  • Record the bitrate OBS is sending and any changes in the stream’s resolution or frame rate.
  • Note whether the stream recovers, disconnects, or remains live with degraded video.
  • Write down the time and wording of any YouTube stream-health warning.

These details make it easier to see whether a later test helped and give your volunteer team or ISP useful evidence if the fault persists.

Lower the bitrate and test the connection’s headroom

A download-speed result does not tell you how much upload capacity is reliably available for a live stream. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, but this is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a guarantee for a continuous church stream. The connection needs room for variability and other church traffic, and a speed test cannot guarantee that the route will remain steady during a service.

YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations provide context for choosing a stream format. They are platform recommendations, not a requirement to use the highest quality your encoder offers:

Output format YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026. Its table also lists separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265. Whatever format you use, the church’s upload route must reliably carry the chosen stream. If it cannot, reducing resolution, frame rate, or bitrate can trade image detail or motion smoothness for a more stable feed.

Run a controlled bitrate test

  1. Arrange a private or otherwise non-public test using the church’s normal streaming workflow, if that workflow allows.
  2. Lower the video bitrate in OBS and run the test long enough to include the period when the service stream usually begins dropping frames.
  3. Keep the other relevant settings and network conditions the same. Change one meaningful variable at a time.
  4. Watch OBS’s network-dropped-frame counter and YouTube’s stream health. Record the bitrate and the time of any change.

If the stream stabilizes at a lower bitrate, the connection may not reliably sustain the original setting. That result does not tell you whether the cause is Wi-Fi, shared upload traffic, a device fault, ISP congestion, or another part of the route. Use the test to narrow the problem, not to assign blame.

Reduce network variability at the church

Try wired Ethernet and pause competing uploads

If the encoder is on Wi-Fi, test with a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi can introduce instability, and OBS recommends wired networking for streaming. During a rehearsal, pause avoidable upload-heavy activity such as cloud backups or large file transfers. If the church shares its connection with other devices or services, note what is active when the drops occur.

Check software that changes or prioritizes traffic

OBS identifies VPNs, security software, outdated network drivers, and optimizer or traffic-prioritization software as possible contributors. If appropriate for the church’s security and IT policies, test one suspected software factor at a time; do not leave security protections disabled as a general fix. On Windows, OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as optional settings that some users report help. Treat them as tests, not guaranteed cures, and compare results under similar conditions.

  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

Check OBS’s network binding and dynamic bitrate carefully

  • Set Bind to IP to Default. OBS suggests trying IPv4 Only as a test; if it makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Dynamic bitrate adjustment can lower the bitrate during congestion, which may help avoid dropped frames. It does not fix the underlying connection problem and can reduce picture quality.

Change one setting at a time and record the result. Otherwise, it is difficult to tell what improved or worsened the connection.

Inspect the physical network path

Trace the route from the streaming computer to the modem and router. Depending on the church setup, it may pass through a network interface, wall jack, cable, switch, powerline adapter, extender, router, or modem. OBS lists faults in cables and network equipment among possible causes of connection trouble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check that connections are secure and look for damaged cables or equipment.
  • Where practical, test a known-good Ethernet cable or connect the computer directly to the router to bypass intermediate devices.
  • Change one component at a time, then repeat the test. Replacing several devices at once can obscure which change mattered.

If you are unsure whether a device is at fault, OBS recommends speaking with your ISP before replacing hardware. A cable or other replacement is worth considering when a test identifies that component as faulty, not merely because dropped frames appeared.

Verify the YouTube encoder settings

For standard YouTube RTMP/RTMPS streaming, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, uses constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check the settings in your encoder against the current requirements and look for Live Control Room warnings about bitrate, frame rate, or keyframes.

Encoder settings and network capacity are related but not interchangeable: a compliant configuration cannot compensate for an unstable upload path, and lowering bitrate cannot correct every configuration problem. If the system sends primary and backup feeds, Google’s API documentation notes that differences in properties such as resolution, bitrate, frame rate, codec, audio settings, or keyframe frequency can be flagged.

Rehearse with service-like audio and motion

Before Sunday, run a test that includes movement and audio similar to the actual service rather than relying on a static screen. YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative audio and motion, then monitoring stream health during the live event. Save the OBS log and note warning timestamps so the team can compare symptoms across rehearsals and services.

When to contact the ISP

Escalate if drops continue over wired Ethernet at a bitrate below the upload capacity you have measured, after you have checked local traffic, software, and equipment. Congestion or route changes on the provider’s side may be outside the church’s control. OBS advises investigating these possibilities rather than assuming the encoder is at fault.

When contacting the ISP, provide the times and durations of the drops, OBS’s bitrate and dropped-frame percentage, whether other services remained online, and any YouTube ingestion messages. Ask whether there was congestion or a route issue affecting the connection at those times. This information is more useful than a general report that the stream was unreliable.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded church videos playing continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home or at the church, and no OBS computer or local internet connection needs to remain running for playback. The stream runs at the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. For a live church service captured by cameras, the troubleshooting steps above address the OBS and network path.
