A black screen between sermon videos can come from the playlist or source, the encoder, or the connection carrying the stream. The quickest way to narrow it down is to compare the encoder’s local output with what viewers see, then check playlist readiness, encoder health, and network status—in that order. A black interval by itself does not prove that any particular piece of hardware has failed.
First find where the picture disappears
Check the same point in the stream from more than one place: the encoder preview, a locally saved recording if available, YouTube’s live preview or dashboard, and the viewer-facing stream. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, routed audio and video sources, encoder errors, CPU load, and a local archive when investigating stream-quality problems (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream).
- The encoder preview or local recording is black too: Start with the selected scene or video source and the playlist transition. The problem is likely occurring before the stream leaves the encoder, although this comparison alone does not prove the exact cause.
- The encoder output looks normal, but viewers see black: Check encoder errors, YouTube’s stream-health information, and the outbound connection. Review the archive around the gap if one is available.
- Only some viewers report it: Compare the stream from another device or network and ask whether the issue happens at the same time. That helps distinguish a stream-wide interruption from a viewer-side playback issue.
Note the time, duration, and whether the gap occurs at every video boundary or irregularly. A repeatable gap at transitions points you toward the playlist or source handoff; an irregular gap makes encoder and connection status especially useful to inspect. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a single cause.
If the local output is black, check the playlist and source
Confirm the next video is actually ready
Verify that the intended sermon files are present in the playlist and that each has finished uploading or processing in the service that plays it. Then inspect the order and the point where one clip ends and the next begins. Automated-streaming guidance commonly recommends checking file readiness and stream-health messages when playback stops; an unprocessed file is a possibility to rule out, not an established explanation for every black transition (Castr: How to troubleshoot 24/7 live streams).

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Inspect the selected scene or media source
If an encoder such as OBS produces the stream, confirm that the scene being sent still contains the intended video source and that the source is visible and active. Check whether the source changes or disappears when the current sermon ends. For a dedicated playlist service, look for its playback status or error message at the transition.
Do not assume that every black interval is caused by a blank clip: first compare the local output with the viewer-facing stream and confirm which file or source was active at that moment.

If local output is healthy, check the encoder and YouTube status
Inspect the encoder’s error messages and CPU load, and check YouTube’s live dashboard for stream-health warnings at the time of the interruption. YouTube lists these checks, along with verifying the encoder output and routed audio/video sources, as ways to investigate stream-quality problems (YouTube Help).
Use the recording or archive as another comparison point. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; the archive can help establish whether the gap was present in the received stream, but the archiving rule does not explain why an individual video transition went black (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder). Follow YouTube’s current guidance for archiving behavior, which may change.

Check dropped frames and the outbound connection
In OBS, dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS advises addressing the underlying connection issue rather than treating a lower bitrate as a root-cause repair (OBS: Dropped Frames and Networking Issues).
- Look for dropped-frame or disconnect indicators in the encoder when the gap occurs.
- Compare the configured bitrate with the connection’s ability to sustain it, and investigate instability on the outbound network.
- Check whether the encoder reconnects or whether YouTube reports a loss of incoming video.
If the encoder’s local output stays healthy while the live stream fails, these checks help focus the investigation on the path from encoder to YouTube. A bitrate change may be useful in some situations, but it should not be mistaken for proof that bitrate was the underlying fault.

Keep a short incident record before changing equipment
- Write down the time and duration of each black interval.
- Record whether it coincides with a video boundary or happens at random.
- Compare the encoder preview, local recording, platform dashboard, archive, and viewer report for that same period.
- Save relevant encoder errors, CPU-load observations, stream-health messages, and dropped-frame or disconnect status.
This record helps separate a repeatable playlist or source issue from an encoder or network interruption. The checks above support several possible software, source, and connection causes; they do not establish that a particular cable, computer, or encoder needs replacing.
