For a 24/7 YouTube channel that plays continuously without relying on real-time audience interaction, start with Normal latency in YouTube Studio. YouTube says Normal offers the highest viewer quality and least buffering, and supports all resolutions and live features. Choose Low or Ultra-low only when shorter delay matters enough to accept more buffering risk—and, for either setting, the loss of 4K support.
Which latency setting should a 24/7 channel use?
Use YouTube Studio’s Normal setting for a continuous, non-interactive feed. It gives the player more time to buffer incoming video, which YouTube describes as the option with the least buffering and highest viewer quality. A 24/7 music, ambient, or scheduled-video channel usually benefits more from steady playback than from a few seconds less delay.
Choose a shorter-latency mode only if viewers need to react or converse with the stream in near real time. YouTube cautions that less latency means less read-ahead buffer, making playback more sensitive to problems between the encoder and viewer. Congestion can add delay even when the average bitrate seems sustainable. These settings affect the YouTube audience’s playback; Castr’s own playback modes are separate.

The latency figures are YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee for every viewer or network. YouTube’s help page was checked in 2026; it does not state a publication year.

Change the latency setting in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream.
- Open the stream dashboard and select Stream Settings.
- Under Stream latency, choose Normal, Low, or Ultra-low.
- For an unattended continuous channel, leave the setting on Normal unless a specific interaction requirement justifies the trade-off.
YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are always set up for interactivity and do not offer a selectable latency setting. The menu described above applies to streams where YouTube exposes the latency selector.
How Castr fits into the setup
Castr is the ingest and distribution service in this setup; YouTube’s mode for YouTube viewers is selected in YouTube Studio. In Castr, create or open the livestream, select an ingest region near the broadcast source, configure a supported input such as RTMP/RTMPS or SRT, and add YouTube as a destination through its API connection or YouTube server and key. Castr’s setup guide also describes stream monitoring and backup features.

Castr labels its own player options Normal, LL, and ULL. Its January 2026 guide describes LL as under 15 seconds and ULL as under two seconds for Castr playback. Those are Castr service/player claims, not YouTube latency settings or independent measurements. Castr’s Sub-Second Streaming documentation says sub-second playback is available only through the Castr player; social destinations use standard latency. Set the YouTube mode in YouTube Studio, and configure Castr playback separately if viewers will watch through Castr or an embedded player.
Before relying on Castr LL or ULL for a Castr player link or website embed, check the account and plan: Castr’s January 2026 guide says LL is available to Ultra and Premium-yearly subscribers. Confirm current eligibility in the account dashboard.

What 24/7 operation requires
Castr says it supports unlimited stream duration while the subscription remains active and has enough streaming bandwidth. That is not a promise of uninterrupted delivery through every failure. The source encoder, power, network connection, and account and bandwidth continuity still matter.
- Use a wired Ethernet connection where practical. Castr recommends it because Wi-Fi can introduce packet loss and latency spikes. A cable can improve the local network link, but it cannot change YouTube’s selected latency mode or guarantee an end-to-end delay.
- Watch the stream-health information in Castr’s dashboard so you can spot input or delivery problems.
- Choose Normal for the YouTube destination when stable playback is more important than immediate interaction; lowering latency cannot fix an unreliable source or network.
- Keep the Castr subscription and available streaming bandwidth sufficient for the duration and delivery you need.
Troubleshooting latency and playback problems
Viewers report buffering after switching to Low or Ultra-low
Shorter latency leaves less read-ahead buffer and makes playback more sensitive to network and encoder issues. If interaction does not require the shorter delay, switch the YouTube stream back to Normal in YouTube Studio > Live Control Room > Stream Settings > Stream latency.

YouTube viewers are not seeing Castr’s LL or ULL timing
Castr’s LL and ULL figures describe Castr playback, not the YouTube destination. Choose YouTube’s latency mode in YouTube Studio. Castr’s sub-second mode is limited to its own player; its documentation says social destinations use standard latency.
A 4K stream cannot use Low or Ultra-low
YouTube does not support 4K in Low or Ultra-low latency modes. If 4K is required, use Normal latency.

The stream has delay despite a sustainable average bitrate
YouTube notes that network congestion can cause delay even when average bitrate is sustainable. Check stream health in Castr, inspect the source and network connection, and consider wired Ethernet to reduce possible Wi-Fi packet loss or latency spikes. Do not assume a lower latency mode will resolve congestion; it reduces buffering headroom.
The channel stops before the intended 24/7 run is complete
Check that the Castr subscription is active and has enough streaming bandwidth, then check the source encoder, power, and network. Castr’s unlimited-duration statement is conditional on an active subscription and sufficient bandwidth; it does not establish uninterrupted service in every failure condition.
