Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play compatible prerecorded podcast segments in sequence, then send the output to YouTube Live with an FFmpeg streaming command. The concat file is only a finite playlist: it does not loop itself or guarantee an uninterrupted stream. You must configure the encoder and YouTube stream, test the complete path, and plan for playlist completion and failures.
What an FFmpeg concat file does—and does not do
The concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and presents their packets to FFmpeg as one virtual input. It adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts after the previous one. This is useful for sending a prepared sequence of podcast segments without first joining them into a single file.
It is not a YouTube playlist, a streaming service, or an infinite-playback setting. When FFmpeg reaches the end of the list, the input is exhausted unless you deliberately arrange another playlist cycle. The demuxer also cannot prevent encoder, computer, or network failures.
Check whether the concat demuxer fits your files
The demuxer can join compatible inputs at the packet level without re-encoding. FFmpeg’s documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Check the files’ stream layouts and timestamps before relying on them as a continuous sequence. An inaccurate duration estimate, a truncated file, or mismatched inputs can place the next file’s timestamps incorrectly and cause gaps or artifacts. A duration directive can override the duration FFmpeg reads for a file, but it should reflect the actual media duration.

FFmpeg has three distinct concat mechanisms; choose by what your material and output require:
| Method | Use it when | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Inputs have compatible streams and can be joined at the packet level without re-encoding. | Matching streams, codecs, and time bases matter; incorrect durations can disrupt timestamps. |
| Concat filter | You need to re-encode, normalize, or filter inputs as they are joined. | It is a filtering and encoding workflow, not the packet-level demuxer approach. |
| Concat protocol | You need file-level concatenation and the container format supports it. | It applies only to formats that permit this kind of concatenation. |
See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenating media for the distinction between these approaches. If segments differ in codec, stream layout, or other relevant properties, do not assume the demuxer will make them compatible; use a workflow that re-encodes or normalizes the material.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Create the concat playlist
Make a plain-text file, for example podcast.ffconcat, with one directive per line. For automatic format recognition, the first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark.
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
Keep the media files where the listed paths can resolve from the playlist’s working location. In the default safe mode, paths must be relative and use the portable character set. Filenames containing spaces or special characters need the escaping or quoting described in the FFmpeg documentation’s concat demuxer section.

The demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. Avoid treating -safe 0 as a routine solution to a rejected path: it allows arbitrary filenames, so use it only when the playlist and paths are trusted and you understand the implications.
Send the playlist to YouTube Live
The playlist is the input; the rest of the FFmpeg command must select the video and audio streams, encode them in settings suitable for your YouTube ingestion configuration, and publish to the stream endpoint using your stream key. The exact command depends on the files, chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and local FFmpeg build. Keep your stream key private: do not paste it into a public post, screenshot, or shared command history.

Configure YouTube Live and FFmpeg to agree on the output codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its listed bitrate encoding mode is CBR. Use the YouTube bitrate row matching your actual codec and output configuration rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.
| H.264 output configuration | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | not stated in the cited YouTube bitrate figures | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | not stated in the cited YouTube bitrate figures | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | not stated in the cited YouTube bitrate figures | 8 Mbps |
The figures are YouTube recommendations for the specified H.264 resolution and frame rate, not measurements or guarantees of a healthy stream. The 5 Mbps minimum is stated for H.264 at 1080p30; the cited figures do not establish minimum values for the other rows. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table and the row matching your settings. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its suitable bitrate depends on ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate.

Test for continuity before relying on the stream
A long playlist is not proof that the stream will stay live. Test the chosen settings and the whole delivery path before using it for an extended broadcast. YouTube recommends testing against available upload bandwidth, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips also recommend 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate.
- Confirm the concat playlist opens and every listed file is available and readable.
- Watch the YouTube preview and check audio and video at transitions between segments.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health feedback while testing and during the broadcast.
- Verify the integrity of any local archive you intend to keep.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
These checks improve readiness but cannot promise uninterrupted delivery. The YouTube streaming tips cover bandwidth, testing, preview, health monitoring, archives, and encoder failover.
Plan for the playlist ending and common failures
The demuxer reads the entries you give it; a finite concat file ends when its final input ends. For a single long broadcast, arrange enough segments for the intended duration and monitor when the sequence is approaching completion. If you need repeated playback, confirm that your chosen FFmpeg workflow actually restarts the playlist; the concat file format alone does not create an endless loop.
- FFmpeg rejects the playlist or a path: Check that the first line is exactly
ffconcat version 1.0, the file is plain text without a byte-order mark, and relative paths resolve. Review quoting and escaping for unusual filenames. Keep safe mode enabled unless you have a trusted playlist and a specific reason to use-safe 0. - Transitions have gaps, artifacts, or timestamp trouble: Check that the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Verify that files are not truncated and that any explicit
durationvalues match the media. - YouTube reports stream-health problems: Check that the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and stream endpoint match the applicable YouTube guidance. Test available upload capacity and leave the recommended bandwidth headroom.
- The live output stops at the end of the list: This is playlist exhaustion, not a YouTube loop setting. Add more material or use a tested workflow that starts the sequence again.
- The stream drops unexpectedly: A concat file does not provide fault recovery. Check the encoder process, network connection, YouTube stream health, and any tested backup-encoder procedure.
Or let it run in the cloud
