A frozen picture during a 24/7 YouTube stream can originate in the recording, encoder, upload or YouTube ingest path—or in one viewer’s playback. First identify where the freeze appears. That tells you what to check next and helps avoid changing settings or replacing equipment without evidence.
Locate where the video freezes
Compare the same moment at each point in the stream path. YouTube recommends checking the encoder, local archive, stream health, connection and playback on another device or network. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide and live streaming tips cover these checks.

These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a single cause. Check the evidence at each layer before changing settings.
Work through the checks in order
- Check the source and local archive. Play the original coaching video and inspect the local archive, if your setup makes one. If a live archive is being written, verify that it remains playable and that its file size continues to grow. A freeze in the source or archive points upstream of viewer playback. YouTube recommends checking archive integrity and file growth in its production tips.
- Compare the encoder preview and errors. Watch the encoder’s preview around the time viewers report a freeze. Check its CPU load and error messages, and confirm the source quality routed to the encoder. If the preview also freezes, focus on the source, capture or encoder; if it remains smooth while many viewers see a freeze, investigate ingest and upload. See YouTube’s troubleshooting steps.
- Read stream health in Live Control Room. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the stream-health status and any specific error messages. YouTube’s live metrics guidance explains stream monitoring. The official diagnostic definitions include insufficient video ingestion, unsupported codec and keyframe-frequency problems. Address the reported issue rather than guessing at settings.
- Check upload headroom and stability. Run a speed test and compare stable outbound capacity with the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube says, “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available,” and recommends leaving 20% room. Count the primary and backup stream bitrates if you use both. This is a planning recommendation, not a guarantee against every interruption. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Ask whether the problem affects everyone. Check with viewers on different connections. If just one person is affected, have them try another network and device, restart or update the app or browser, and reduce playback quality if the selected resolution is beyond their available speed. YouTube notes that network congestion can disrupt live programming even when a connection otherwise seems good. See YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.
Settings that can affect playback
Latency
YouTube defines latency as the time between capture and display. Lower latency reduces read-ahead buffering, which can make interruptions more likely. YouTube’s guidance puts it plainly: “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” For prerecorded coaching content that does not need real-time interaction, consider whether a higher or default latency setting better suits the need for steady playback. DVR
DVR lets viewers pause, rewind and continue during a live stream. Its presence alone is not evidence that it caused a frozen picture. Treat it as a separate viewing feature, not the first suspected cause. YouTube describes DVR in its live-stream settings.
Encoder format and keyframes
If Live Control Room reports a codec or keyframe issue, use the exact diagnostic to review the encoder configuration. YouTube publishes encoder recommendations for supported settings, bitrates and resolutions in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Avoid changing several encoder values at once: make the indicated adjustment, then monitor stream health and playback.

Transcoding is not a cure for upstream problems
YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and network conditions. That does not rule out a frozen source, encoder error, inadequate upload, ingest problem or a viewer-side issue. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual stream, then monitoring health while live. See its encoder settings guidance.
Common symptoms and what to do
- The original video freezes at the same point: inspect or replace the source file, then retest before changing YouTube settings.
- The source plays smoothly but the encoder preview freezes: check encoder errors and CPU load, then review the source quality and capture path.
- Live Control Room reports insufficient video ingestion: check the outbound connection and whether the stream’s total bitrate fits available upload capacity. YouTube’s diagnostic wording is “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.”
- Live Control Room reports codec or keyframe problems: compare the encoder’s output with YouTube’s published settings recommendations.
- One viewer reports freezing, while others do not: test another playback device and network, restart or update the app or browser, and try a lower playback quality.
- The freeze is intermittent and no clear error appears: note its time, compare the encoder preview and stream-health messages, and ask multiple viewers whether it happened simultaneously. Those comparisons can narrow down whether the issue is production-side, ingest-side or local playback.
