You can’t select a YouTube playlist as a native input in YouTube Live Control Room. To broadcast prerecorded lessons as a continuous live stream, play them in order with a software or hardware encoder—or use a cloud streaming service—and send that encoder’s feed to YouTube with your stream URL and stream key.
What a playlist can—and can’t—do in YouTube Live
A YouTube playlist is an ordered collection of videos. YouTube’s documented live-stream workflow, by contrast, sends an encoder-generated video feed to a live event. Its guidance does not describe a control in Live Control Room that turns a playlist directly into a 24/7 broadcast. An encoder converts video into a format YouTube can receive for a live stream (YouTube’s encoder guide).
That means the playlist needs to be played and encoded somewhere else. The playback system—such as software on a computer, standalone encoder hardware, or a cloud service—sends the resulting continuous feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder guide lists software and hardware approaches and identifies a cloud-service category for 24/7 prerecorded video streaming; it does not establish the current capabilities, uptime, or commercial terms of specific providers.
Check that your channel can go live
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the planned broadcast.
- YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old.

Set up a playlist-to-live workflow
- Choose the playback and encoding route. Use software or standalone hardware that can play your lesson videos in the intended order and encode a continuous feed. A cloud streaming service is another route; check its current playlist controls, restart behavior, monitoring, archive workflow, and terms rather than assuming these are the same across services.
- Create an encoder-based live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder workflow. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts for the event’s title, visibility, and schedule. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting an encoder to the event with its stream URL and stream key (YouTube Help).
- Connect the encoder. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding streaming settings in your playback/encoding system. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. If it is exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream-key controls (YouTube Help: Manage your live stream settings).
- Arrange the lesson playback. Put the intended videos in order in the player or service that will feed the encoder. Confirm that the playlist advances as expected, audio is present, and the next video begins without an unintended pause or unrelated content. A YouTube watch-page playlist is not itself the encoder feed.
- Start a test before the real broadcast. Start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the live page is accessible to the intended audience, inspect audio and video health, and verify that playback advances through the lesson sequence.
- Test unattended operation and recovery. If you have a backup encoder, test its failover rather than assuming it will take over. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover where a backup is configured (YouTube Help: Live encoder settings and troubleshooting).
Network, stream key, and continuity checks
Leave bandwidth headroom
The connection from the encoder to YouTube needs adequate upload capacity for the outgoing stream. YouTube recommends 20% network headroom in its guidance, so avoid planning to use the full measured upload bandwidth for the stream. Check the connection under the conditions in which the broadcast will run, not only during an idle-network test (YouTube Help).
Protect the stream key
- Store the key only in the encoder or service that needs it; do not publish it in lesson materials, screenshots, or public chat.
- Use the stream URL and key for the correct event, then confirm the encoder is sending to that event’s preview.
- If the key is compromised, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement key.
Plan for interruptions
A playlist advancing successfully does not guarantee an uninterrupted live broadcast. The player, encoder, internet connection, or YouTube connection can fail independently. Monitor the event during initial operation, and test any configured backup path. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing failover when a backup encoder is configured; it does not mean every setup has automatic recovery.

Plan the replay separately
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (YouTube Help: Archive live streams). That statement does not establish that one continuous 24/7 stream will become one complete archive. If viewers need a replay of each lesson or day, decide on a separate recording and archive workflow, or consider shorter scheduled live sessions, then verify the current archive behavior for your setup.
Choose between running it locally and in the cloud

YouTube notes that encoder products listed in its guidance are not made by YouTube and should be evaluated by the user (YouTube Help). The available platform guidance does not support a vendor-by-vendor comparison of cloud services, their prices, or their uptime.

Copyright and lesson-content checks
Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights needed to stream every lesson, including any music, images, clips, or other third-party material it contains. A video being available on YouTube or included in a playlist does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it as a live feed. Also review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for your channel and content.
Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is not available yet: Check channel verification and restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-stream activation.
- The encoder does not connect: Confirm that the event’s stream URL and stream key are entered in the correct settings. If the key may have been exposed or is no longer valid, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The preview is missing or unstable: Check that the player and encoder are running, the correct event is selected, and the upload connection has the recommended headroom. Inspect Live Control Room’s audio/video health indicators.
- The live page is inaccessible to viewers: Verify the event’s visibility and schedule in Live Control Room, then test access using the intended viewer experience.
- The next lesson does not start: Check the playlist order and the playback system’s behavior at the end of each video. Test a full sequence before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream drops while the playlist keeps playing: Playback and transmission are separate. Check the encoder and network connection; test a configured backup encoder rather than assuming it will take over.
- The 24-hour broadcast does not produce a complete replay: YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage is for streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording plan or verify the current archive behavior before relying on one long session.
