Start the lecture and watch the OBS audio meter for the source that should capture its sound. If it does not move, OBS is not receiving audio from that source. If it moves, check monitoring, mute and fader settings, then compare a local recording with the YouTube stream to find where the sound disappears.
Trace the sound from playback to YouTube
Check each point in sequence rather than changing several settings at once. That makes it easier to identify the break in the audio path.
- Confirm the lecture is playing with sound. Check its own playback controls and the output device. A muted player or unexpected output device can leave the capture source with nothing to receive.
- Watch the relevant OBS meter. Start playback and look for movement on the meter belonging to the source expected to carry the lecture audio. OBS’s audio-meter technical guidance says the input indicator is the first place to check whether audio is reaching OBS; no indicator means no audio is reaching that OBS interface. OBS Audio Mixer Guide and Audio Mixer Technical Details.
- If the meter moves, listen through OBS monitoring. In the Audio Mixer, open Edit → Advanced Audio Properties for the source and check its monitoring selection. Listen through the configured monitoring device, and inspect mute, fader and filters. OBS explains source monitoring in its Audio Mixer Guide.
- Record a short local test. Play the lecture while making a short OBS recording, then listen to the recording. This checks whether sound is reaching the local output; OBS recommends recording and listening back before going live.
- Compare the recording with the live output. Check the sound directly in the encoder or YouTube live view. If the recording has sound but the live stream does not, the difference points toward live output, track selection or routing. That is a diagnostic inference, not a confirmed cause without inspecting your setup. YouTube also recommends checking encoder output and the local archive when troubleshooting stream sound: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
A moving meter is useful, but it does not prove that viewers receive sound: mute, fader, routing or downstream encoder output can still interrupt it.
Use the test results to narrow the cause
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The lecture plays, but the expected OBS meter does not move | The capture or input path is not reaching that OBS source. | Check playback output, the selected capture source or device, and whether that source type fits how the lecture is played. |
| The meter moves, but OBS monitoring is silent | The source, its filters, or the monitoring-device path may be wrong. | Check mute and fader state, filters, monitoring selection and the configured listening device. |
| OBS monitoring works, but the local recording is silent | The recording output or selected audio track may differ from the monitored source. | Inspect the recording configuration and which audio output or track it includes. |
| The local recording has sound, but the YouTube stream does not | Live output or stream routing may differ from the local capture. | Listen to the encoder’s live output and check which source or track reaches the stream. |
| The encoder output has sound, but a viewer reports silence | The issue may be specific to that viewer’s playback or connection. | Compare playback on another device or connection and check whether other viewers report the same issue. |
These are diagnostic interpretations, not confirmed causes. YouTube says a problem reported by one viewer may be with that viewer’s computer or connection; reports from viewers on different connections can point to an encoder issue. YouTube live stream troubleshooting.

Match the capture method to how the lecture plays
There is no single capture-device setting that fits every setup. The right instructions depend on your operating system and whether the lecture plays in a browser, an OBS media source or another application. OBS documents these as separate capture paths, including application audio capture, macOS desktop audio capture and media sources. Choose the guide that matches your platform and playback method rather than changing an unrelated device setting.
If the audio disappears intermittently
Note when the sound stops, then check whether the lecture playback is still active and whether the selected application or device changed at that time. A 24/7 schedule does not, by itself, establish a different first-line audio diagnosis; trace the same signal path when the fault occurs.
