To repeat a lecture without restarting your YouTube broadcast, loop the video inside OBS and leave the encoder stream running. For one file, add a Media Source and turn on Loop. For several files, use a VLC Video source, add them to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. The video playback repeats; it does not need to end the YouTube event.
Choose the OBS source that fits your lecture

OBS scenes contain sources that make up the stream layout. Add the source to the scene you use for the lecture output. See the OBS Media Sources and Sources Guide documentation for the source controls and scene basics.
Loop one lecture video with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene used for the lecture output.
- In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the local lecture video.
- Open the source properties and enable Loop.
- Review Restart playback when source becomes active. This setting restarts the file when its source becomes visible in the current scene; it is different from Loop, which repeats playback at the end of the file.
Loop a playlist of lecture videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS says its VLC Video source is unavailable without VLC. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source to the lecture scene and add the lecture files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. If lectures must play in a particular order, leave Shuffle Playlist off.
- Set Visibility Behaviour for your scene workflow. OBS documents a default behavior that stops playback while the source is hidden and restarts it when visible. If playback needs to continue through scene changes, choose a continue-playing behavior available in your installed version and test it before the broadcast.
Keep the YouTube live event running
Start OBS using the stream URL and stream key associated with the YouTube event. The key lets the encoder send its feed to YouTube. When a lecture reaches its end, let the OBS source loop; do not stop streaming in OBS or use End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room when your intention is only to repeat the video.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe stopping content from the encoder as part of ending a stream. For a scheduled stream, the documented process also includes selecting End Stream in Live Control Room. These are separate from OBS media playback controls: a loop setting repeats the file, while the encoder and event controls govern the broadcast. This does not guarantee an uninterrupted network connection.

Before relying on the setup, check the OBS output and YouTube Live Control Room preview. Confirm picture and audio, including at the point where a file repeats or one playlist item gives way to the next. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream audio and video quality in its live streaming tips.
Troubleshoot looping and scene changes
- The video starts over when you change scenes: inspect the source’s Visibility Behaviour and, for a Media Source, Restart playback when source becomes active. Source visibility affects playback independently of the YouTube event’s status.
- The playlist plays in the wrong order: turn off Shuffle Playlist.
- VLC Video is missing from the source list: install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- You need to edit the playlist during playback: behavior may vary by OBS version and setup; the documentation does not establish that an edit preserves the current playback position. Prepare the playlist beforehand or test the exact edit procedure on your setup. Playlist-edit behavior is distinct from the YouTube broadcast controls.
- The YouTube event seems to have ended or restarted: check whether the OBS encoder feed was stopped or End Stream was selected in Live Control Room. Those are stream-ending actions, unlike the source’s loop setting.
