To run website screenshots on a cron schedule, write a browser-automation script that opens the page and saves an image, test it as the same user that will run the job, then schedule that script in the user’s crontab with absolute paths and logging. Cron starts the command; it does not capture the page itself. The example below uses Node.js and Playwright, with notes for adapting the approach to Puppeteer.
What you need before scheduling a screenshot
- A machine that will be running when the capture is due, with Node.js, your chosen automation package, and its required browser installed.
- A target URL the scheduled user can access, plus a writable directory for the images and logs.
- A defined capture goal: the initial viewport, the full scrollable page, or one element; and a readiness condition suitable for the site.
Playwright and Puppeteer both document browser screenshot APIs. Choose based on your project’s runtime, browser setup, and existing code rather than assuming one is universally better. Install the library and browser in the same environment and under the same operating-system account that will run cron. Write and test the capture script
Node.js with Playwright
Install Playwright in your project and install the browser you intend to use according to the browser installation guide. Save this as capture.js, changing the URL and output path to real, absolute paths:

})();This is an illustrative template, not a tested command for a particular site, package version, or machine. Ensure the screenshot directory already exists and is writable by the cron user. The finally block closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.

Set readiness to match the page
The example waits for networkidle, but no single wait condition suits every website. A client-rendered page may need a specific selector to appear; delayed images may need additional waiting; a continuously polling page may never become network-idle. Authentication, consent flows, animations, and changing page content can also affect what gets captured. Choose a condition based on the content you need in the image and the behavior of the target site.
Choose what the image contains
- Viewport: the visible browser area. Omit
fullPage: truefor a viewport capture. - Full page: Playwright supports
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable page. Very long pages may produce large files and take longer to render. - One element: Puppeteer documents taking a screenshot of a specific element with
ElementHandle.screenshot(); see its screenshots guide.
Playwright’s screenshots guide covers page screenshots, while its Page API documents options such as path, image type, scale, and a stylesheet string. A stylesheet can hide volatile elements or help make captures more consistent. Puppeteer documents page and element capture in its screenshots guide. Use the option set for your chosen library and capture purpose.
Run manually as the cron user
- Switch to, or otherwise run as, the operating-system user whose crontab will own the job.
- Run the script with the intended Node.js executable and absolute script path, for example
/usr/bin/node /absolute/path/capture.js. - Check that the browser launches, the page reaches the chosen readiness condition, and the image appears at the expected path.
- Confirm the output directory has enough space and the user can write both the image and log.
Do this before scheduling: a successful run in your interactive account does not prove that cron’s account, paths, environment, or browser installation are correct.
Add the recurring cron entry
A per-user crontab line has five time/date fields followed by the command. This example runs daily at 06:30 according to the host’s cron schedule and time-zone behavior:

30 6 * * * /usr/bin/node /absolute/path/capture.js >> /absolute/path/capture.log 2>&1Replace /usr/bin/node, the script path, and the log path with the actual absolute paths on your machine. The redirection appends both standard output and standard error to the log, so you can inspect failures as well as successful output.
Install the entry and check the host’s rules
- Open the current user’s crontab with
crontab -e. - Add the schedule and command on one line, save, and exit the editor.
- Check the host’s crontab manual for its syntax, extensions, and time-zone rules. Cron behavior can differ between implementations.
- After the next scheduled run, inspect the output file and log. Do not assume the job worked merely because it was accepted by the editor.
Ubuntu Noble’s crontab(5) manual describes five fields for a per-user crontab and says commands run as the crontab owner. It documents automatically supplied variables including SHELL, HOME, and LOGNAME, but defaults and extensions can vary by implementation. Interactive shell startup files are not a reliable place to define cron’s environment: put needed variables in the crontab or a wrapper script, and use absolute paths.
Set frequency and time-zone expectations
For a weekday run, common crontab implementations support a day-of-week range such as 1-5, but confirm the host’s manual. A cron schedule follows the machine’s configured rules; it is not automatically UTC. The Ubuntu Noble manual notes that daylight-saving transitions may skip a scheduled local time that does not exist or run a repeated local time twice. If timing must be exact, verify the cron daemon’s time-zone configuration and account for those transitions.
Make captures useful and repeatable
Choose naming and retention deliberately
Use a known output location and a naming scheme that reflects whether each run should replace the previous image or preserve history. If preserving every run, include an appropriate date/time in the filename and arrange retention so the directory does not grow without limit. Confirm the timestamp convention you use matches the schedule’s local-time or UTC expectations.

Keep the rendering environment consistent
Browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright’s visual comparison guide discusses these sources of variation. For image comparisons, use a consistent host and browser setup and control volatile page content where practical; do not expect pixel-identical images across unrelated machines or browser configurations.
Plan for long or unreliable pages
- Use a readiness condition tied to the content you need instead of relying on a generic delay for every site.
- Decide whether dynamic elements should be hidden or stabilized, and whether an image should represent the full page or only a fixed viewport.
- Use logs to distinguish navigation failures from missing output or permission problems.
- If the host is not always on, a local cron schedule cannot capture while the machine is off; use an always-on cron-capable environment if the capture must happen regardless.
Troubleshoot a job that fails or captures the wrong page
It works in a terminal but not in cron
Likely cause: cron runs with a different user, working directory, environment, or PATH than your interactive shell. Fix: run the script as the crontab owner, use absolute paths for the runtime, script, browser-related files, and output, and explicitly set required environment variables in the crontab or wrapper. Review the redirected log.
No screenshot file appears
Likely causes: the output directory does not exist, the scheduled user cannot write to it, or the script failed before saving. Fix: create the directory, check its permissions as the cron user, run the command manually under that account, and inspect both standard output and error in the log.
The browser does not launch
Likely cause: the automation package or its browser is missing from the cron user’s environment, or the job is invoking a different runtime than the one used during testing. Fix: install the browser for the intended automation setup and account, then verify launch using the exact executable path and command used in cron. Consult the Playwright browser guide if using Playwright.

The image is blank, incomplete, or captured too early
Likely cause: the page was not ready under the chosen wait condition, or content loads after initial navigation. Fix: wait for a relevant selector or other site-appropriate condition, and check whether the page requires authentication or contains delayed images. Adjust viewport versus full-page capture to match the intended result.
The job runs at an unexpected time or not on a daylight-saving transition
Likely cause: the schedule follows the cron host’s configuration and local-time rules. Fix: consult the platform’s crontab manual, verify the daemon’s time zone, and account for skipped or repeated local times around daylight-saving changes.
Images differ between runs or machines
Likely cause: page content or rendering conditions changed. Fix: keep the browser and host environment consistent, reduce volatile content where possible, and select a repeatable page readiness condition. Differences can remain across differing environments.
