To use a YouTube stream key in OBS, copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter them in OBS, and start streaming. For a scheduled event, check the preview and click Go live if YouTube requires a separate publishing action. The key authorizes the encoder feed; it does not keep your computer, internet connection, OBS, or lecture source running around the clock.
Before you connect OBS to YouTube
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your first lecture stream. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements
- Decide whether you are streaming a live lecture, a prerecorded lecture, or a playlist. OBS needs a source that continues producing video and audio; a stream key alone is not a video source.
- Plan who will watch the stream and how it will be monitored. Continuous operation depends on the computer, power, network, OBS, and source remaining available or recovering after interruption.
Find your YouTube stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- On the Stream tab, create a stream or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube supports reusing stream settings and creating a custom reusable key.
- Copy both the stream URL and the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, put it in a public screenshot, or share it with people who should not broadcast to your channel. YouTube stream settings
Enter the key in OBS and start the lecture stream
- Open OBS and go to its stream settings. Choose YouTube as the service if it is available and follow the connection flow, or choose a custom server option and enter YouTube’s stream URL in the server field.
- Paste the YouTube stream key into OBS’s stream-key field. OBS menu labels can vary by version; use the server and key fields rather than assuming a particular label or workflow.
- Set up the lecture scene and confirm its video and audio sources are active. For prerecorded material, make sure playback will continue or loop as intended; for a live lecture, verify the camera, screen capture, and microphone before going live.
- Start streaming in OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to receive the encoder feed, inspect the preview and audio/video, then click Go live if the scheduled-stream workflow requires a separate action. - To stop, stop the encoder in OBS and use the event controls in YouTube Studio to end the published stream cleanly. If the key is exposed or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS; only channel owners or managers can reset a key.
Choose settings and operating practices for a continuous lecture
Use the production setup that matches the lecture
YouTube describes encoders as useful for screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, and more advanced productions. For a straightforward lecture, no special hardware is required to enter a stream key; a microphone is an optional audio source when the lecture includes speech. YouTube’s guidance says expensive equipment is unnecessary. An OBS setup is a good fit when you want scene control and can keep the computer, source, power, and network operating.
Decide whether low latency and DVR help viewers
YouTube offers latency choices and DVR. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, and YouTube notes it matters less when the streamer is not interacting with the audience. DVR lets viewers pause and rewind during a stream. For a lecture intended for study, consider whether rewind is useful and whether the audience needs near-real-time interaction before choosing a latency setting.
Plan archives for streams longer than a lecture session
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a broadcast lasting more than 12 hours will be archived as one complete video. For continuous programming, plan deliberate stream segments or a separate local recording and archive process, and verify current YouTube Studio behavior before relying on a long broadcast as your only recording.

Prepare and monitor the stream
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend setting up an encoder at least 2 hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These are useful preparation timings, not a guarantee against interruptions. YouTube live-streaming tips
- Preview the stream before publishing and check that the intended video, audio, and lecture source are present.
- Test failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging Ethernet, then verify that your recovery plan works.
- Check that any local archive files are growing if you are recording locally.
- Open the watch page on desktop and mobile, and monitor audio and video quality during the stream.
- For unattended operation, test the exact OBS scene and source behavior, encoder reconnect settings, power and network recovery, and YouTube event behavior before depending on them.
Troubleshoot common stream-key and continuous-stream problems
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed
Check that the stream URL is in OBS’s server field and that the matching key is in the key field. Confirm that OBS is actually streaming and that the key belongs to the selected YouTube stream. If the key was reset, update OBS with the replacement key.

The preview appears, but viewers cannot watch
A scheduled stream may need a separate Go live action after the encoder preview arrives. Check Live Control Room and the event’s auto-start setting; do not treat the preview as proof that the event has been published.
The stream stops when the computer or connection fails
A stream key cannot keep a local encoder running. Check the computer’s power and sleep behavior, the network connection, OBS, and whether the lecture source remains active. Test encoder reconnection and the full failover path rather than assuming OBS or YouTube will restore every failure automatically.

The stream is live but lecture audio or video is missing
Inspect the OBS scene and its selected sources, then confirm the audio and video in the Live Control Room preview before publishing. Monitor the watch page as well as OBS; a scene that appears correct locally can still fail to deliver the intended viewer experience.
The 24/7 broadcast has no complete archive
YouTube’s documented automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours. Break continuous programming into planned sessions or maintain a separate recording process, and verify the current Studio archive for each event.
