To keep an OBS lecture stream running, prevent the computer from entering system sleep while it is plugged in. You can still let the display turn off: screen timeout and system sleep are separate settings. In Windows 11, change the plugged-in sleep timeout; on a Mac, enable Apple’s option to prevent automatic sleep on power adapter when the display is off. Then test your complete setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
First, distinguish a sleeping screen from a sleeping computer
A screen can turn off while the computer stays awake. That is usually the right arrangement for an unattended lecture stream: OBS needs the computer to remain active, but the monitor does not need to stay lit. Set the screen timeout to suit your needs and make sure the system’s sleep timeout will not suspend the machine during the stream.
OBS has code-level functions for inhibiting sleep, but that does not establish a consistent, user-facing keep-awake switch across operating systems and versions. A community discussion explains that OBS may prevent Windows from sleeping while it is open and rendering; treat this as community guidance, not a guarantee. Keep OBS awake in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Under the plugged-in settings, set the option for putting the device to sleep so it will not activate during the lecture. Choose a timeout appropriate to the expected stream length, or select the never option if it is available and appropriate for your setup.
- Set the plugged-in screen-off timeout separately. The display can turn off while the computer remains awake.
- Keep the computer connected to power and test that OBS continues streaming after the display turns off.

Windows can also honor system-required requests that prevent automatic sleep. OBS forum posts discuss powercfg -requests and request overrides, but those are community suggestions, not the normal first fix. Prefer the built-in timeout controls; an override can change how Windows handles sleep requests and is unnecessary when the standard settings solve the problem. Keep a Mac awake when its display is off
- Connect the Mac to its power adapter.
- Open System Settings and check the Lock Screen and Battery settings for your installed macOS version.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, if that option is available.
- Allow the display to turn off as desired, then verify that OBS remains active.
Apple documents this control as a way to keep the Mac from automatically sleeping on adapter power while the display is off. The menu location and wording can change by macOS version; consult the current settings if they differ. Apple warns that preventing or delaying sleep may increase power use. Linux: use your distribution’s power settings
There is no single verified menu path that applies to every Linux distribution and desktop environment. Check your distribution’s power-management settings for separate controls for display blanking and system suspend, and ensure system suspend will not occur during the stream. The specific labels and behavior depend on the installed desktop and version; verify the change with a test rather than assuming a setting is universal. Optional: launch OBS and start streaming automatically
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can start streaming when OBS launches in a prepared workflow, but it is not a keep-awake setting and does not supervise OBS or promise recovery after a crash, network interruption, restart, or power failure. Test the full lecture setup before relying on it
The OBS Quick Start Guide says, “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” For a 24/7 lecture, also run a longer practical check of your own complete setup: leave the display off, confirm the stream remains live and audio/video continue, and observe what happens when the network or OBS is interrupted. The longer check is practical advice, not an OBS-prescribed test duration; a short test cannot establish day-long reliability. OBS Quick Start Guide
Preventing sleep addresses one failure mode only. It does not guarantee continuity through an OBS crash, operating-system update or reboot, overheating, network or ingest disruption, power failure, or lid-close behavior. Plan separately for the risks relevant to your site and equipment; the sleep setting itself does not resolve them.

Common problems and fixes
- The display is dark and the stream stopped: Check the system sleep timeout, not just the screen-off setting. Confirm that the device is plugged in and the plugged-in sleep rule is configured as intended.
- The screen stays lit unnecessarily: Reduce the screen-off timeout while leaving system sleep disabled for the stream. The two timers serve different purposes.
- The Mac sleeps with its display off: Check that it is on adapter power and that the automatic-sleep prevention option is enabled in the current macOS settings.
- OBS starts but does not recover after interruption:
--startstreamingstarts a stream when OBS launches; it does not itself restart OBS or recover a disrupted session. Check the cause of the interruption and test any separate recovery process you rely on. - Streaming is unstable even though the computer stays awake: Sleep settings do not guarantee that the computer can encode the chosen resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
