What runs the meditation stream?
The distribution is only the operating-system foundation. A typical Icecast setup has two software roles: Liquidsoap generates and encodes the audio feed, while Icecast receives that feed and relays it to listeners. Liquidsoap’s quickstart describes the generator sending audio to the server whether listeners are connected or not. Icecast can serve feeds at mount points, and one server can carry multiple streams. This recommendation is for software running directly on an ordinary Linux host. If your home server is a NAS appliance, virtualization host, container platform, or an already-managed system, the best deployment may depend more on that environment than on choosing Debian versus Ubuntu. The audio source, format, playlist behavior, and metadata requirements also need to be decided separately.

For either distribution, use a maintained release and verify that the current Liquidsoap package supports your CPU architecture before installing. Liquidsoap lists Debian and Ubuntu package options for amd64 and arm64; package channels and available versions can change. Check Liquidsoap’s current installation guidance.

Keep Liquidsoap running after reboot
For a continuous stream, run Liquidsoap under a service manager rather than depending on an open terminal or a logged-in desktop session. Liquidsoap’s production guidance recommends running it in the foreground under a service manager such as systemd on Linux. Its example service waits for network availability, runs under a dedicated liquidsoap user, restarts the process, and can be enabled at boot with systemctl enable --now radio. - Prepare the audio and Liquidsoap configuration. Decide how your meditation audio is supplied and configure the generator and Icecast connection for that source. The audio source and format are not specified here, so use the Liquidsoap documentation applicable to your files and playlist.
- Validate the script before deploying a change. Run
liquidsoap --checkas recommended by Liquidsoap’s production guidance. Resolve reported script errors before restarting the service. - Run the generator as a managed service. Use a
systemdunit that starts after network availability, runs under a dedicated service account, and defines restart behavior. Follow the production example and adapt its paths and service details to your installation rather than copying them blindly. - Enable startup and start the service. For a unit named
radio, Liquidsoap’s example command issystemctl enable --now radio. This enables boot startup and starts it immediately. - Check the service after deployment. Confirm the unit starts successfully and that Icecast receives the expected feed at its configured mount point. After changing the script, validate it before restarting.
Secure the public-facing Icecast configuration
Do not expose example Icecast credentials. Liquidsoap’s quickstart specifically warns that the example passwords in the Icecast configuration must be changed when the server is publicly accessible. The cited guidance is not a complete security-hardening guide. Firewall exposure, TLS termination, access control, and update policy depend on how you deploy the service; consult current documentation for the chosen distribution and deployment rather than assuming the example configuration covers them.
What the distribution choice cannot tell you
The cited documentation does not provide a comparative uptime or performance test for Debian and Ubuntu, nor does it establish listener capacity, required CPU or memory, or required upload bandwidth for your particular stream. Do not infer those numbers from package availability. Actual requirements depend on the stream configuration and audience, which are not specified here.

For an existing Linux administrator, familiarity is a practical factor: the distribution you can maintain and update confidently is preferable to switching solely for an unproven performance advantage. On a fresh, ordinary server, Debian is the straightforward default; Ubuntu Server is equally reasonable when its documentation and your experience suit your maintenance workflow.
