For a standard stereo guided-meditation stream sent to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS, set the encoder’s live audio to AAC, 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps. YouTube also supports MP3 for this ingestion route, but AAC is the straightforward default. These settings apply to the audio your encoder sends to YouTube; they do not require your original meditation recording to be stored as AAC.
Recommended settings for a stereo meditation stream
| Encoder setting | Recommended value | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Audio codec | AAC | The outgoing live stream sent to YouTube over RTMP/RTMPS |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz | Stereo live audio |
| Audio bitrate | 128 kbps | Stereo live audio |
| Ingestion protocol | RTMPS recommended | YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts data to and through Google’s servers |
These are YouTube’s recommended stereo encoder settings, not an independently measured guarantee of audible quality. They are suitable for a conventional spoken meditation or stereo ambience bed. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
Set the live encoder without changing your source recording
- In your encoder, choose the YouTube RTMP/RTMPS streaming destination and use RTMPS where available.
- Set the outgoing audio codec to AAC, the channel layout to stereo, the sample rate to 44.1 kHz, and the bitrate to 128 kbps.
- Keep the source meditation in the format your editing or playback workflow requires. These live-ingest recommendations do not prescribe a source-file or editing-master format.
- Send a test stream before the session. Use audio and movement similar to what you expect during the live broadcast, then check YouTube’s stream health while it is running.
YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The creator’s job is to send a supported, stable input and verify the stream; there is no separate viewer playback format to select. YouTube explicitly advises creators to test before going live. When MP3 or 5.1 audio makes sense
MP3 is an accepted alternative
YouTube lists both AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. MP3 is a valid choice if your encoder or workflow requires it; YouTube’s documentation does not establish that the two codecs sound identical in every setup or that one is preferable for every encoder. For ordinary stereo meditation, AAC follows YouTube’s stated stereo settings. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation also identifies configuration problems such as unsupported codecs and sample-rate inconsistencies.

Use 5.1 only for an actual surround production
For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC and recommends a 48 kHz sample rate and 384 kbps audio bitrate. A typical guided meditation does not need surround sound; do not select 5.1 unless the recording, encoder, and listening experience are deliberately produced for it.
Check stream health and troubleshoot audio issues
- YouTube reports an unsupported codec: Confirm the outgoing live codec is AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. If your encoder offers AAC, use it for the recommended stereo configuration.
- YouTube reports a sample-rate inconsistency: Check that the encoder’s outgoing stereo audio is set to 44.1 kHz. The API health documentation identifies sample-rate inconsistencies as a configuration issue.
- The stream is configured for 5.1 unexpectedly: For a normal stereo meditation, switch the channel layout back to stereo and use the stereo settings above. Keep the 5.1 values only for a genuine surround stream.
- The live preview or stream health is not clean: Test before the scheduled broadcast with similar audio and movement, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the event. Correct any reported configuration issue before relying on the loop.
The published codec and bitrate recommendations here are specifically for RTMP/RTMPS. A different ingestion protocol may have different audio constraints.
