There is no documented Safari setting that universally restores a missing page background in a full-page screenshot. First identify whether you made an iPhone Full Page screenshot, printed or exported a PDF, or saved webpage content on a Mac; those are different workflows and need different troubleshooting.
First, identify what you saved
On iPhone, Apple’s Full Page screenshot workflow captures content beyond the screen, such as an entire Safari webpage. After taking a screenshot, select Full Page and save the result as an image or PDF. Apple’s instructions explain the workflow but do not identify a setting to restore missing page backgrounds: Take a screenshot on iPhone.
On Mac, Safari’s webpage-saving commands are separate from screenshots. Save As can save a Web Archive or Page Source; Page Source is HTML, not a screenshot. Apple also notes that some background images cannot be saved using the context-menu Save Image command. See Save part or all of a webpage in Safari on Mac.
Printing or exporting to PDF is another distinct path. A setting that affects printing should not be assumed to affect Safari’s built-in screenshot.

Compare the page with the saved result
- Open the same page in Safari and check whether the background appears onscreen.
- Identify the platform: iPhone or iPad, or Mac.
- Identify the exact action and output: Full Page screenshot saved as an image or PDF, print/export to PDF, Save As, or Save Image.
- Compare the live page and output. If the background is missing onscreen too, investigate how the page itself is rendering or loading. If it appears onscreen but not in a print or PDF result, investigate that print/export path instead. This comparison is a diagnostic step, not proof of a particular cause.
Troubleshoot the relevant workflow
iPhone or iPad: Full Page screenshot
Use the built-in screenshot flow, select Full Page, and choose image or PDF output. If the background is still absent, the documented Apple guidance does not provide a universal corrective setting. Record the iOS version, page URL, output format, and whether the background is visible on the live page; those details help distinguish a page-specific rendering issue from a capture issue.
Mac: saving webpage content
If your goal is an offline copy, choose the format that matches it. A Web Archive saves webpage graphics and links; Page Source saves HTML source. Neither is equivalent to a screenshot. If you used Save Image on a background image, note that Apple says some background images cannot be saved that way.

Mac: print or PDF output
Check whether the missing background occurs only in the printed or exported document. WebKit’s shouldPrintBackgrounds preference concerns whether a WKWebView includes backgrounds when printing; it is not documented as a toggle for Safari’s built-in full-page screenshots. See WebKit’s Safari 16.4 feature notes and Apple’s shouldPrintBackgrounds documentation.
For developers: isolate the capture path
If you are debugging your own site or an app that embeds web content, reproduce the issue while keeping the page, device, and output path clear. Check whether the background renders in the live page, then compare the exact screenshot or print/PDF result. For inspecting a page in Safari, WebKit documents how to enable Web Inspector.

Only investigate shouldPrintBackgrounds when the operation is printing from an embedded WKWebView. Its scope does not establish that changing it will fix a screenshot taken in Safari. Without the affected page and a reproducible output, do not assume the cause is transparency, a particular CSS rule, or a Safari-wide defect.
