A white strip in a Chrome full-page screenshot can be real CSS spacing, a paint-rounding edge, or something specific to the capture path. First capture the page with Chrome DevTools’ built-in full-size screenshot and compare that image with the one that shows the strip. If both have it, inspect the page’s layout and paint geometry; if only one does, focus on how that image was captured.

1. Capture a DevTools reference image

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. If needed, turn on the device toolbar.
  3. In DevTools, open More options and choose Capture a full size screenshot.

Chrome describes this command as capturing the whole page, including content outside the current viewport. Use the result as a reference, not as proof that a particular capture method is faulty. See Chrome’s screenshot instructions.

2. Find out whether the white strip belongs to the page

Compare the reference screenshot with the image that has the seam. Also scroll the live page to the same section boundary. In DevTools’ Elements panel, inspect the elements on either side of the strip and compare their backgrounds and computed box edges.

  • The strip appears in the live page and both screenshots: investigate layout spacing or painted edges at that boundary.
  • The strip appears in one screenshot only: compare capture paths and inspect whether it sits at a capture junction. That difference narrows the investigation but does not by itself establish the cause.
  • The strip moves or changes as the page scrolls or renders: inspect for layout changes before treating it as a fixed gap.

3. Check for actual CSS spacing

Inspect the styles and computed layout for the sections around the strip. Start with the properties that can create space between neighboring content:

  • gap and row-gap on grid, flex, or multi-column containers.
  • Margins on the sections or their children.
  • Padding on the container or adjacent elements.
  • Grid or flex track sizing and alignment that distributes extra space.

The CSS gap property defines space between rows and columns, but the visible separation can be larger than its declared value when margins, padding, or distributed alignment also contribute. See MDN’s documentation for gap.

If you confirm that a layout property creates the band, adjust that property or the relevant section sizing. Avoid changing unrelated styles: first identify which element owns the space.

4. Check fractional sizing and paint edges

A narrow, often one-pixel-looking seam can also come from how fractional dimensions meet at a painted edge. Chromium’s code history documents one specific case: a fractional parent size combined with border-width flooring during paint left a gap between the parent border and child background. This is a real but narrow mechanism, not a general explanation for every white strip. See the Chromium change dated October 18, 2022.

Check the geometry at the affected boundary, including section heights, borders, transforms, browser zoom, and device scaling. If you find fractional CSS-pixel dimensions that match the seam, test a small geometry adjustment and recapture at the same zoom and device scale. Do not add arbitrary overlap or transforms before reproducing the issue; those can conceal one edge while creating another.

5. Use Rendering diagnostics to observe what changes

When the cause is not obvious, open DevTools’ Rendering panel and use its overlays to observe page behavior:

  • Paint flashing highlights areas that are repainted.
  • Layout Shift Regions highlights layout shifts.
  • Layer Borders shows layer and tile outlines.
  • Scrolling Performance Issues highlights potentially problematic scrolling listeners.

These are diagnostic displays, not commands that repair a screenshot seam. Their role is to help you see painting, layout changes, and layer boundaries. See Chrome’s Rendering-panel guide.

6. Compare manual and automated captures

For automation, the Chrome DevTools Protocol’s Page.captureScreenshot method includes a captureBeyondViewport option and supports clipping to a region. Those parameters help describe how a capture was requested, but they do not establish that automation caused a particular white strip. Compare the protocol image with the DevTools reference and check whether the seam aligns with a DOM boundary or a capture junction. See the DevTools Protocol screenshot method.

Capture path Useful for What to compare
DevTools full-size screenshot A reference image from Chrome’s documented full-page workflow Whether the same band appears and whether it lines up with a page boundary
DevTools Protocol screenshot Automated capture, including beyond-viewport or clipped captures Whether the seam appears at the same location as in the DevTools reference

The available Chrome documentation does not establish a universal quality ranking between these capture paths.

7. Troubleshooting checklist

  • The seam appears in every capture and on the live page: inspect gap, margins, padding, alignment, and section dimensions at that boundary.
  • The seam is one pixel wide: check fractional dimensions, borders, transforms, zoom, and device scaling; test only a geometry change supported by what you find.
  • The seam appears only in a third-party stitched image: compare it with the DevTools full-size image and locate whether the line coincides with a capture junction. The available sources do not establish that screenshot extensions as a class cause seams.
  • You cannot see the cause in the page or CSS: use Rendering-panel overlays to observe paint and layout behavior, then reproduce at the same viewport and scale.
  • A CSS tweak hides the strip but breaks nearby content: undo it and inspect the box edges and fractional geometry before trying another change.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a repeatable screenshot without assembling a browser-capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
