To archive a website each week, connect three steps: a weekly schedule, a screenshot capture, and an upload to a Google Drive folder. A no-code workflow can join those steps; a customizable setup can use Google Cloud Scheduler and Workflows to trigger a capture-and-upload process. Choose the page area, image format, timezone, folder, and dated filename before relying on the schedule.
Choose a workflow: no-code or configurable
A published viaSocket template illustrates a no-code version: a Monday 8 a.m. trigger, a full-page capture using ScreenshotOne, and an upload to a chosen Google Drive folder. The template describes configurable folder and filename choices, but its current availability and compatibility may change. See the viaSocket workflow example.
For more control over scheduling and cloud configuration, Google documents using Cloud Scheduler to trigger a Google Cloud Workflow. The workflow must still perform the screenshot and Drive upload; a scheduler only starts the job. This route also requires configuring authentication, including a service account. Decide what the weekly screenshot should show
Viewport, element, or full page
- Viewport: captures what appears in the browser window. Use it when the visible fold is the feature you want to compare week to week.
- Element: captures a selected page element, such as a pricing panel or announcement area.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page. This can produce a tall image, so confirm that the whole page—not just the first screen—is useful for your archive.
Playwright documents viewport, selected-element, and full-page screenshots. It supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and accepts a filename for the capture. Playwright screenshot documentation.
Choose format and filename
Use a format supported by your capture method. PNG, JPEG, and WebP are documented by Playwright. A dated filename such as site-name-YYYY-MM-DD.png makes each weekly image distinct and easier to sort. The date pattern is a practical naming recommendation; the viaSocket template also describes filename configuration.
Set the weekly schedule and timezone
Choose a weekday and local time, then set the timezone explicitly. Otherwise, the job may run at an unexpected hour if the scheduler uses a different timezone than the one you have in mind.

For Google Cloud, Cloud Scheduler uses a five-field cron expression and supports recurring weekly schedules and timezone configuration. For example, a Monday-at-8 schedule uses 0 8 * * 1; choose the scheduler’s timezone to match the intended local time. Confirm the syntax and timezone options in the Cloud Scheduler schedule documentation. Google also documents the workflow trigger and service-account setup in its Workflows scheduling guide.
Build and test the capture-to-Drive flow
- Choose the target URL. Decide whether the archive should show the viewport, a particular element, or the full page.
- Configure the recurring trigger. Select a weekly day, time, and timezone in the no-code scheduler or Cloud Scheduler.
- Run the screenshot step. Configure the capture method to use the intended page scope and image format.
- Upload the image to Drive. Connect the destination account and select the folder. Give each run a dated filename so a new capture does not obscure an earlier one.
- Test manually before enabling unattended runs. Check that the page loads, the intended area appears in the image, and the file reaches the correct Drive folder with the expected name.
Use Playwright when you want browser-level control
Playwright can take the screenshot, but it does not by itself provide the recurring schedule or Google Drive delivery. Those remain separate steps: arrange a weekly trigger, run your capture process, and upload its output to Drive.
For a one-time local capture, install Playwright and its browser as described in the installation guide, then use this Node.js example to save a full-page PNG:

To capture a specific element, locate it and use the locator’s screenshot method, for example await page.locator('.target-selector').screenshot({ path: 'site-section.png' });. Replace .target-selector with a selector that matches the page. The filename argument lets you organize output, but you still need to automate date generation, schedule execution, and Drive upload for a recurring archive.

Handle common problems
The job runs at the wrong time
Check the configured timezone as well as the weekday and time. In a cron-based schedule, verify the five fields and confirm the intended weekday value in the Cloud Scheduler documentation.
The screenshot is cut off or too tall
Check the selected capture scope. Use a viewport capture when only the visible screen matters; use full-page mode only when the entire scrollable page is needed. For a focused comparison, capture a specific element if your tool supports it.

The image is missing from Drive
Check the connected account or service-account permissions, the destination folder, and the upload step’s result. A successful schedule trigger alone does not prove that capture or upload succeeded.

A private or dynamic page looks different than expected
Test the exact page and capture setup before depending on unattended runs. Authentication support, bot restrictions, and dynamic content behavior vary by service; the available workflow examples do not establish a universal method or guarantee compatibility.
Weekly files overwrite one another
Use a filename that includes the capture date and confirm the upload action creates a separate file rather than replacing an existing one.
Cost, reliability, and maintenance
The cited workflow examples do not establish current prices, plan limits, private-page authentication behavior, or guaranteed unattended success. Verify the current requirements of the selected scheduler, capture provider, and Drive connection before committing to a workflow. A manual test confirms the path from trigger to saved file at setup time, but periodic checks are sensible because third-party integrations and target websites can change.
